    2. I anyone out there local to Franklin County interested in some genealogical field trips? GCC extended it's enrollment in the Senior Education section until today or tomorrow. The librarian at UMass is very excited about giving a tour on Oct 14. I'd hate to cancel it. We also scheduled the Franklin County Registry of Deeds, PVMA library, and Greenfield Library. 2. Yow! The danger of the printed word! I never intended the tone I have been chided for here. I'm very sorry if it was taken to be critical. It is just that there can be such factionalizing in a place like Deerfield where the past collides with the present. Where children of farmers battle with children of academics in the schoolyard. Anyone who is sharing the information that Cynthia is should be cannonized. I am extremely impressed with the altruistic members of this list, as well as many others, who follow trails that aren't directly related to their own families. Mea culpa.

    3. Sara: This is the only time I will respond to this email....as I am not going to tie up the mailing list archives with nonsense that can be dealt with off the list. --- So what if you are in Deerfield....that doesnt mean you know every thing there is to know about Deerfield...... -- Deerfield and South Deerfield are ONE AND SAME town,Deerfield, period. According to the maps and town histories from the secretary of state, South Deerfield is a SECTION OF Deerfield , NEVER was incorportated as a town and never intended to be. -- OLD DEERFIELD IS a SETTING.......to enjoy old houses, history and ancestors. Deerfield (including S.Deerfield) is the actual name of the incorporated town. If folks want to get genealogical information on the early settlers of Old Deerfield, there is a library in Old D. that will help........as for the rest of the inhibitants of Deerfield (inc. S.D.) will need to contact the town clerk. All depends on the time frame. as to where one goes -- Having different fire depts and water districts HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACTS Madam. Springfield has at least 10 different fire depts and water, etc.,yet all is the same town,Springfield. --- You are correct on one thing, the town offices are in S.Deerfield, (just as I said) -- I do not use old maps in explaining things to folks on the list because it just confuses them......when other towns were established with land annexed from Deerfield as follows: Conway (1791), Whately (1810), Greenfield,1896 ...........most of the stuff I am referring to is PRIOR TO THESE DATES (1810 and 1896).......there were settlers coming and going from Deerfield and Conway prior to 1791. --- As I go on with the photo site with maps, etc. I will be adding OLD MAPS but it will be so folks can comprehend the changes over time....obviously you are familar with New Eng history.....so am I and many others on the lists.... but many folks are not --- The Greenfield 250th anniversary book......it's probably good....I havent seen it but it covers only the basic stuff and one has to know the background to interpret what all the stuff means. ---- The reason I included the mailing list of Franklin Co., Northfield is my hometown and Deerfield is part of my growing up years Also Franklin Co., has much to do with the history of Connecticut River Valley and the Mass. Bay Colony. if the Franklin co folks dont want the announcement, just let me know off list, and no further notices will be sent (of Photos or anything else.) --------- Cynthia adm.for the [email protected] mailing list http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MA-BAY-COLONY protected by Grisoft anti virus program ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 8:24 AM Subject: [MAFRANKL] deerfield > Don't tell someone from Deerfield that they are one in the same! 3. Lists: I have uploaded one roll of SOUTH Deerfield cemetery that is on the corner of South Main St. and Thayer St. http://cyndy.smugmug.com/History/2700 - Many subscribers are confused about " Old Deerfield " and South Deerfield....when they are ONE AND SAME. -- 1. Old Deerfield is a "town that time passed " by thanks to Henry and Helen Flynt....this part of town was attacked in 1704....the Flynt's were able to save some of the remaining old buildings from demolition and the whole area was preserved to keep the colonial feeling . -- 2. South Deerfield is ACTUALLY Deerfield ! The ambush that took place in 1675 is now South Deerfield and the area that fell under attack during King Philip's War was called "Bloody Brook". -- 3. You may find the following names when researching Deerfield ** The Bars * Pocomtuck * Wapping -- 4. there is a book: " FAMILY & LANDSCAPE; DEERFIELD HOMELOTS FROM 1671" by Susan McGowan and Amelia F.Miller; Pocumtuck Valley Mem.Association, 1996. If you are an ancestor, you will love this book...it can beordered from http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/430045.html oodles of pictures and details. --- Photographs of "OLD DEERFIELD" will be on another page Cynthia adm.for the [email protected] mailing list http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MA-BAY-COLONY protected by Grisoft antivirus program

    1. [MAFRANKL] old maps
    2. I don't know if anyone has checked out the map-history of Greenfield at www.old-maps.com BUT now there is a new booklet out delineating the historical boundaries of Hinsdale, NH at the same web site. This would be of interest to Franklin county researchers because the town was part of Northfield before the state line chopped it off. Reproductions of historical maps show many property owners and businesses. This would be a worthwhile project to index--much easier to read than the Greenfield maps, because of the size of the town.
