    1. [MAFRANKL] Colrain Marriage Intentions 1905-1939
    2. I recently visited the town clerk's office in Colrain - a very friendly place with a terrific staff! In case anyone was looking for this: This fall a Colrain resident was cleaning out the attic of a private home and found the ledger containing the marriage intentions for the Town of Colrain, recorded from Aug 1905 to Dec 1939. (How this town property came to be there, is anyone's guess, I was told.) The book is now in the Town Clerk's office. Shari Strahan

    1. [MAFRANKL] HAYNES, Pardon, Dr. - Descendants of
    2. First Generation 1. Dr. Pardon HAYNES was born in 1762 in New London, New London, Connecticut. Vital Records of Conway, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass. 1943. p. 72. In June 1806, ten citizens petitioned the Grand Lodge at Boston for a subordinate lodge of masons in Rowe to be called Mountain Lodge; and three months later, September 9, 1806, the charter was duly granted. The names of the incorporationing brothers are: John Wells, Pardon Haynes, Zedediah Barrett, Selah Munson, Joel Hall, Zebulon Benton, Jonathan White, Alfred Olds, Francis Porter and Caleb Blakeslee. p. 85. Dr. Pardon Haynes was elected hogrief in 1790 have come to Rowe in 1788. p. 157. of Rowe, Mass., 1790. p. 86. Pardon Haynes was the town physician for many years, namely from 1788 to 1832. In the seating of the meeting house in 1820 he was rated second only to Rev. Preserved Smith. The town in 1825 allowed only a part of his bill of $81.87 "for Doctoring" various families in the town and he was obliged to enter suit in order to collect the whole. He was born in New London, Conn., in 1762 and when 15, came with his father to Hoosac. He studied medicine with a brother; and after a short practice in Hebron, N.Y. he came to Rowe, where he built up a large practice. His traveling was mostly by horseback and in winter occasionally on show-shoes; and many tales are told of his narrow escapes when fording the Deerfield or the like. Under commissions from Governors John Hancock and Samuel Adams he commanded the military company and had the best-disciplined company in Gen. Mattoon's regiment. We should not confuse old Doctor Haynes with his son Pardon Haynes who was a practical joker. Dr. Pardon HAYNES and Hannah HOLLOWAY were married on 3 FEB 1790 in Conway, Franklin, Massachusetts. Vital Records of Conway, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass. 1943. p. 157. of Conway, Mass., 1790. Dr. Pardon HAYNES and Hannah HOLLOWAY had the following children: +2 i. Electa HAYNES. 3 ii. Pardon HAYNES. Vital Records of Conway, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass. 1943. p. 86. Pardon Haynes, Jr. who was practical joker. He lived on the Canedy farm on the County Road (we must be careful not to use this term loosely, for more than one road was thus called in the old records). Often preferring to work than to attend church, he one Sunday perceived his neighbor Josiah Carpenter approaching on his way to the sanctuary. Being in the potato patch, he had no time to dodge behind the house, but sought a hiding place in a hogshead. Now his brother Anson Haynes who was known to be a little "queer," took in the situation and quietly came up and set the hogshead rolling down hill. The sequel may be left to the reader's imagination. Pardon Haynes, Jr., liked to play jokes on the other fellow. It seems that Abijah Burnap was elected to the school committee which was an agreeable job, all except traveling to obtain new teachers, for he had no team. He was heard to complain on this score and thought that some of his neighbors might lend him a horse. One morning he found a horse of wood near his door with tail and mane made of small spruce trees. Grandma Grundy says that it was the work of "that Pardon Haynes." 4 iii. Anson HAYNES. Second Generation 2. Electa HAYNES. Electa HAYNES and Humphrey GOULD were married on 11 JUN 1827 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. Humphrey GOULD (son of Zaccheus GOULD Sr.) was born on 3 JUL 1797 in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts. He died on 8 AUG 1874 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. Vital Records of Conway, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass. 1943. p. 87. Dr. Humphrey Gould came to Rowe as successor to Dr. Haynes, whose daughter he married. He also lived on the farm recently owned by the late Edward Wright, and his daughter, the latter married. The old inhabitants remember Dr. Gould as "a fine courtly man, well educated, a good neighbor,' and a constant attendant at church. He was absent-minded and of course this led to many ludicrous mistakes. He was usually the first one to bring out his sleigh, after the first fall of snow. Amzi Langdon one day came for the doctor in great haste and said that the well-sweep had fallen on his wife and knocked her sensible! Dr. Gould died in 1874 at the ripe age of 77. Electa HAYNES and Humphrey GOULD had the following children: +5 i. Electa Haynes GOULD (born on 1 AUG 1828). +6 ii. Hannah GOULD (born on 18 DEC 1836). Third Generation 5. Electa Haynes GOULD (Electa HAYNES-2, Pardon-1) was born on 1 AUG 1828 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. Electa Haynes GOULD and William A. HICKS were married on 15 AUG 1854. Electa Haynes GOULD and William A. HICKS had the following children: 7 i. Charles Humphrey HICKS was born on 27 OCT 1855 in Lancaster, Coos, New Hampshire. 8 ii. William Austin HICKS was born on 11 NOV 1856 in Lancaster, Coos, New Hampshire. 9 iii. John Gould HICKS was born on 31 DEC 1865 in Lancaster, Coos, New Hampshire. 10 iv. George Dwight HICKS was born on 26 JUL 1867 in Lancaster, Coos, New Hampshire. 6. Hannah GOULD (Electa HAYNES-2, Pardon-1) was born on 18 DEC 1836 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. She died on 3 MAR 1875. Hannah GOULD and Edward WRIGHT were married on 19 MAR 1863 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. The History of Rowe, Massachusetts, by Percy Whiting Brown, 2d edition, Privately Published, 1935, Cleveland, Ohio, Printed by A. D. Williams Company. p. 71. Postmaster of Rowe, appointed: March 16, 1868. Hannah GOULD and Edward WRIGHT had the following children: 11 i. Henry Dunbar WRIGHT was born on 18 JAN 1872 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts. 12 ii. Lucius Gould WRIGHT was born on 3 FEB 1875 in Rowe, Franklin, Massachusetts.

    1. [MAFRANKL] Gramma Knox's Legacy now on line
    2. Peggy J Knox
    3. Hi Everybody, I finally did it! As some of you know, I've been working on my first book, Gramma Knox's Legacy since 1999. I had originally planned to write the entire historical narrative fiction to include all my American "Gramma Knoxes" beginning with the first whose name has been lost to history to my last Gramma Knox, Lillian Northrop Knox, who died in 1968 at the age of ninety-two. However, my disabilities interfered with that plan, so I had to reroute, as they say. Rootsweb.com has allowed unlimited free web space to put my book on the Internet. Early this morning I finished uploading Gramma Knox's Legacy Book I covering the years 1718 thru 1774--the periods covered are leaving Northern Ireland for Boston; then to Hopkinton; to the founding of the town of Blandford, Massachusetts to the death of William Knox, my first grandfather in this country. Though most of the book is fact, I chose to write it as a novel. Outside of the Title page through the Introduction and Chapter twenty-two, the book is broken down in to two-chapter segments. The notes section cite quotes, events, and whether someone or something is fiction or not. There are no footnotes within the story, as I didn't want to interfere in the telling of it. Because my Scot ancestors who came here didn't speak the King's English, I have included a glossary to translate the Doric words they spoke. Some words have changed meaning since the eighteenth century, and some aren't used any more, so their meanings for the eighteenth century are also included in the glossary. I also include a bibliography. I wish I could I could say I did a beautiful and professional web design, but I didn't. The index does not list the chapters in order, but I thought, for me, it is more important to begin to write Book II than take all the time it would take to learn to be even in the parking lot of the baseball stadium of a professionally designed web page. I am proud of my work, and feel blessed to share it with all of you. Although my URL is under my signature, just in case something goes wrong in cyber space here it is again: (remember to use the last forward dash as it is the only way you can access the Index--which is what one needs to read Gramma Knox's Legacy Book I.) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~peggyjknox/ Shalom Peggy J.
