    3. Thank you so much for the information on Harriet/Hattie Hicks and family, also for the page on Cora and Lena Sears. This information seems to rule out this Harriet/Hattie Hicks as my great-grandmother. I will keep searching for a Harriet Hicks, born somewhere in the MA, VT, NY area, born 4 Apr 1866(if that date is correct), to Thomas and Elizabeth Hicks, who for some unknown reason is left with her brother Henry at the Shaker Colony in Enfield, CT before 1880. Again, thank you, Kathy ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Owner of -- New England Genealogy http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~negenealogy/home.htm or ad free mirror site - http://homepage.myeastern.com/~kamaba/home.htm & New England Native American Mailing List http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/NEW-ENG-NATAM.html ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    1. [MAFRANKL] Hicks Family of Hawley, MA
    2. K Baker
    3. Hello all, I'm looking for any information on the Hicks family of Hawley, in particular a Harriet, b 1866, and her brother Henry, b ca 1863. They are listed in the 1870 census of Hawley as children of McKendrick and Eliza Hicks. I would be very interested in any information available on them after 1880. My g-grandmother was Harriet Hicks, and I am trying to find out any information about her and her parents before she and brother Henry were left with the Shaker Sect in Enfield, CT. She appears there in the 1880 census of Enfield, CT. All we know about her is that she had a brother Henry, that he was a little older than her and did not remain with the Shakers. She always said her father's name was Thomas and her mother's was Elizabeth, but I can find nothing to substantiate it. She herself searched for many years to find her family and as far as we know had no success as did her daughter, my grandmother, with the same results. Although in her papers we found a letter from a postmaster in Sawyerville, Quebec, dated 1928, that he knew Henry Hicks, that he was working as a cook in a camp outside town, and would try to get a message to him. There is also a photo of a man taken in Sawyerville, but has no name on it, I assume it to be Henry Hicks. I don't know if this was the right Henry, or someone else. My Harriet married Frank King in 1888 and spent the rest of her life in Enfield, Ct. She and Grandpa King were very friendly with Cora and Lena Sears of Enfield. They accompanied them on several visits to Charlemont, Ma where The Sears' had family who owned a large farm there. My Mother says that Cora always gave the impression she knew more about Grandma's family but would not tell anything. Thank you for any help, Kathy ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Owner of -- New England Genealogy http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~negenealogy/home.htm or ad free mirror site - http://homepage.myeastern.com/~kamaba/home.htm & New England Native American Mailing List http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/NEW-ENG-NATAM.html ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    2. I have an Arcobat report that is about 113 pages with notes and sources I you have an interest in this file. The focus is on those descendants that resided in Franklin County, Mass. First Generation 1. Edward SPRAGUE signed a will on 16 Jun 1614 in Upway, Dorsetshire, England. He died about 1614 in Upway, Dorsetshire, England. Will was proved on 13 Oct 1614. He was born in , , England. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume LXIII, Published by the Society, Boston, April 1909. p. 147 We know that Ralph and William Sprague were the sons of Edward Sprague, fuller, and his wife Christain, of Upwey, county Dorset, England, as they are mentioned in his will, dated 16 Jun 1614. He had altogether six children, three of whom came to America. Sprague Families in America, Compiled and Published by Warren Vincent Sprague, M.D., The Tuttle Company, Printers, Rutland, Vermont, 1913. p. 119. Edward Sprague of Upway (sometimes spelled Upwey) was a fuller by Trade. His Fulling Mill was standing until recently. He died in Upway in 1614 and it was he request that his body be buried in the village church year. His will was proved Oct. 13, 1614, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. It was discovered among the papers of Capt. William Sprague (Joseph, William, Edward, John, Ralph), of Leicester, Mass., who died in 1832 and was published in the second edition of Hosea Sprague's Genealogy of the Spragues in Hingham. His sons, William, Ralph and Richard removed to Salem, Mass. in 1628. Edward SPRAGUE and Christian were married. Edward SPRAGUE and Christian had the following children: +2 i. Lt. Ralph SPRAGUE (born in 1603). +3 ii. Capt. Richard SPRAGUE (born in 1605). +4 iii. William SPRAGUE (born in 1609). +5 iv. Alice SPRAGUE. 6 v. Edward SPRAGUE was born in , , England. 7 vi. Christorpher SPRAGUE. Second Generation 2. Lt. Ralph SPRAGUE (Edward-1) was born in 1603 in Upway, Dorsetshire, England. He emigrated in 1628 from England to Salem, Massachusetts. He died in Nov 1650 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume LXIII, Published by the Society, Boston, April 1909, p. 147. Eldest son, born in Upwey, co. Dorset; came to Salem, Mass., in 1628, and from there went to Charlestown (later incorporated into Boston) in 1629. He married Joan Corbin, daughter of John of Fordington, co. Dorset, England. Sprague Families in America, Compiled and Published by Warren Vincent Sprague, M.D., The Tuttle Company, Printers, Rutland, Vermont, 1913. p. 122. The three brothers, Ralph, Richard and William Sprague, came to Salem, Mass., in 1628 in the interests of the Massachusetts Bay Company paying their own transportation. Richard died without issue. Ralph and William became the heads of long lines of descendants in America. Soon after their arrival, they with three or four others were commissioned by Governor Endicott of Salem to explore the country about Mishawum. They undertook the journey, traveling about twelve miles to the west-ward through the woods on a neck of land between the Mystic and Charles River. This was the country of the Albergenians an Indian tribe with whom they made peace. Thomas Walford, a smith, was already living there. It is presumed that the Spragues wintered there in tents. In the spring of 1629, came Mr. Graves, the Company's engineer and Mr. Bright, the minister and others. Mr. Graves laid out the town and the building of houses was commenced. They named the town Charlestown. Hon. Edward Everett in his oration commemorative of the Bicentennial of the arrival of Winthrop at Charlestown, in speaking of the Spragues said, "They are the founders of the settlement in this place" and "were persons of character, substance and enterprise; excellent citizens; generous public benefactors; and the heads of a very large and respectable family of descendants." Hosea Sprague wrote in 1833, "The Tombstones of Lieutenant Ralph and Captain Richard Sprague, the first settlers of Charlestown, remain to this day; the inscription however is almost obliterated by the dropping of water. 2. I have an Acrobat report that is 46 pages with notes and sources if you have an interest in this file. The focus is on those descendants that resided in Franklin Country, Mass. First Generation 1. Francis SPRAGUE. Sprague Families in America, Compiled and Published by Warren Vincent Sprague, M.D., The Tuttle Company, Printers, Rutland, Vermont, 1913. p. 9. Francis Sprague came in the "good ship Anne" which sailed from London, England, and arrived at Plymouth, July, 1623. He was one of those "passengers" who, as Morton writes, "seeing the low and poor conditions of those that were before them, were much daunted and dismayed, and according to their divers humors, were diversely affected. Some wished themselves in England again; others fell to weeping, fancying their own misery in what they saw in others; other some pitying the distress they saw their friends had long been in, and still were under. In a word, all were full of sadness; only some of their old friends rejoices to see them, and it was no worse with them, for they could not expect it should be better, and now hoped they should enjoy better days together.
