Settled about twenty-five rods south of the Whately line, just below the mouth of the Mother George road, where it united with the Deerfield road and where at a later period seventy years ago, Elijah Belden lived on the west side of the Deerfield road. Later Mr. Scott moved to the straits, where he died 4 June, 1776 on the place now owned by Fred A. Hawley. While living at the first named place, Mr. Scott saw a fine, large deer feeding where he had foddered his cows on the snow. It was a Sunday morning. His wife urged him to shoot the deer, insisting that he should as their supply of meat was very small, but he declined and said he would not violate the Sabbath and if the Lord intended that he should have that deer He would certainly send it some other day after, lo and behold, the deer again put in an appearance and Mr. Scott shot him. He came to Hadley when a boy, with his father. He became an earnest christian and for several years was deacon in the church and loved by all. His obituary contains the following, which we quote: "By his death is a good man fallen this day in Israel. He was a veteran in the army of the Lord, having been for more than forty-five years in His willing service Few soldiers of the Cross obey more faithful the Captain of their salvation than did Deacon Hibbard. "In all the relations of life he was faithful. In the family, in the Church, and in the world he let his light shine. Unbounde was his reverence for the Bible, great and constant was his respect for the Sabbath, the sanctuary, and all the ordinances appointed by God for the Conversion and sanctification of men. "Great is the blessing the people of North Hadley have received by him; great is their loss. May his spirit rest upon many. May that spirit remain, as did the mantle of Elijah upon Elisha. Young men will find few better models of industry, frugality, uprightness, benevolence, godly sincerity, and piety. "Peace to his memory. He rests from his labors and his works do follow him." Resided at Windham until 1780, when he moved with his family to Hadley, MA where he became one of the principal settlers of North Hadley. His obituary from the Northhampton Gazette reads: "Mr. George Hibbard, formerly of Windham, Conn., died at Hadley, Mass., July 23, 1823, aged 77. He had sixteen children, one hundred and nine grandchildren and fifty-one great-grandchildren. Fourteen of his children, twenty of his grandchildren, and one of his great-grandchildren are married and most of them have flourishing families. A few year since, Mr. Hibbard and wife made a public profession of religion in Hadley, together with seventeen of their children and children-in-law. He was the progenitor of great part of the neighborhood called Upper Mills, in Hadley, and during a long life has been to them, in a happy degree, and example of that 'wisdom that is from above is first oure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and wi! thout hypocrisy'." Only fifteen names of children can be found. The first eight born at Windham; the reminder at Hadley. The order of children in the Hibbard book is Olive, John, Lydia, George, Abigail, Lorinda, and Martha, all coming before those with birth dates. Also included is a disclaimer about the birth dates which, the author says, have great discrepancies from different sources. My early birth date entries were intended to put them in this approximate order. George HIBBARD and Lydia ALLEN were married.

"Zebulon Hebard moved into Randolph, Vt., from Windham, Conn., in 1784, being one of the original proprietors to whom the land here was granted. He settled on the farm where his great-grandson, W.L. Hebard (son of Asa, son of Enoch), now resides, and which has never been owned out of the Hebard family. "In 1780 the name Randolph first came to be applied to the township, formally organized in 1783. Also in 1780 the grant of a charter was voted by the General Assembly of Vermont then sitting at Bennington. "Vermont had declared her own independence three years before, although there had really been no settlement of Vermont except with military protection until twenty years before. In 1761 was the first permanent settlement upon the west side of the Green Mountains. Early in Nov. the Governor and Council ratified the granting of a charter to Capt. Storrs and his associates, numbering about 70. The name of Diah Hebard appears among them. In 1781 Deacon Samuel Fling and Zebulon Hebard came into the town on horseback from Windham, Conn. Each bought a tract of land and built a shanty, and in the fall returned to Conn. The charter came to the proprietors in June. The county came into existence this year as Orange County. Jan. 1782, James Flint, with three sons, came to settle permanently. They pushed on to the north, to where they had purchased the summer before. Zebulon and his boys put up a hut of boughs and poles which the family occupied for six weeks, until they could put toget! her a log house upon the easterly side of the ridge of the hill upon their lot, in sight of two houses, and in this house they lived for seven years. Zebulon H. was grand juror. "Up to 1791, when Vermont was admitted to the Union, the town had grown till it numbered nearly 900 inhabitants. This outnumbered the population of a hundred Vermont towns. "in 1794, Milan Hebard came from Windham, Conn. In 1801 the firs newspaper was printed and the name adopted, "The Weekly Wanderer." In 1812-14 came the second war with England, and among the volunteers appear the names of Enoch, Diah, and Samuel Hebard, also Stephen Tucker. "Randolph sent 230 of her own men into the active service of the Civil War, 29 of whom never returned. "At one of the business meetings, among other acts, it says: Voted to admit Zebulon Hebard on one of Captain Caleb Clark's. Admitted Barabas Hebard a proprietor on Asa Egerton's right. Admitted Diah Hebard a proprietor on Asa Egerton's right. In 1831, among the members of the Congregational church appears the name of George Hebard (Deacon) and Ruth Hibbard." Lucy HIBBARD and Capt. "He was a man of extraordinary size and strenght. He weighed 230 pounds, was six feet and two inches tall. At the age of 18 he could lift a barrel of cider over the wheel into a cart, and could drink out of the bunghole as others do out of a gallon bottle. They first settled in Leominster on a farm. He was converted to the Baptist faith, joined a class. There being no church in the new country, for the want of a preacher the inhabitants asked him to conduct meetings on the Sabbath. He told them he could not preach, therefore sold out and went to Putney, where he united with the Baptist church.
