Walter Gunn was born in Montague, June 27, 1815, and removed to Carlisle, N.Y., in 1833; in 1837 he joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church; graduated at Union in 1840; studied theology in the Seminary at Gettysburgh, Penn.; was licensed Sept. 6, 1842, by the Lutheran Synod; was appointed a missionary to the heathen in the Lutheran Connexion, May 25, 1843; was married to Miss L. Pultz of New York; was ordained as a missionary at Johnstown, N.Y. Sept. 5, 1843, and the sermon was by Rev. J. Z. Senderling; embarked from Boston in November 1843; arrived at Guntoor, India, June 18, 1844, where he lived and labored for the salvation of the heathen till his last sickness and death. He died with the consumption. Two days before his death, being asked if he had any fears, he replied, "None at all - all is bright and glorious." Respecting his two children, he said to his wife, "Train up the children for Christ." On the day of his death he said, "If this could be my last day, oh ho! w delightful." The native converts watched with the corpse, and sung during the time, "Rock of Ages cleft for me." His Memoir has been published by Rev. G. A. Lintner, D.D., in a little volume of 156 pages, form which the following sentences are taken: "Mr. Gunn devoted himself to the work of foreign missions from a principle of love to his divine Master, and a sincere regard for his glory." "He was eminently a man of prayer." "Our departed brother had an ardent love for souls, and a predominant desire for the salvation of the heathen." The following is from his diary, viz.: "Our desires to labor among the heathen are the same that they were between five and six years ago when we left the shores of our native land. Here, if it please God, we wish to spend the energies of our body and mind, to preach, to pray, to labor, and to die. We have embarked our all in the cause, and we regret not the decision." He died in Guntoor, India, July 5, 1851, aged 36. His widow still survives, a laborer in the foreign field. Though Mr. Gunn became a Lutheran after his removal from Montague, yet as the Evangelical Lutheran Church so nearly agrees in its main features with Orthodox Congregational churches, he is, for conveniences sake, reckoned among the Congregational sons of Montague. Source - Judy Kellar Fox: In 1820 Daniel's brother Luther was farming in Ashfield, where his brother Adolphus also lived. His uncle Samuel, aunt Mary (widow of Zenas) and cousin Obed were also living in Ashfield. Samuel and Obed were also farming. Daniel was working in manufacturing (presumably blacksmithing) in Florida in Berkshire County to the west of Ashfield. Around 1829 Daniel's cousin Alfred, who was determined insane, murdered a man in Ashfield and was committed to a mental hospital, where he apparently lived in a cage with handcuffs and chains. (Alfred Elmer probate file no. 1496, Franklin County Family and Probate Court, Greenfield, MA 01302) In 1850 Daniel and Electa were living in Conway, Massachusetts. At 63 years old, he was no longer working, but his four youngest sons (ages 16-29) were living at home and all working as cabinetmakers. Daniel and Electa had been married close to 50 years when she died. About four years later, when Daniel was 71 years old, he married Betsey, a 66-year-old spinster from Ashfield. Five weeks later Betsey died of a stroke. Eight months later he married again, this time to Nancy Hill, another Ashfield spinster, but younger. Nancy was 55. Hi A list member mentioned that I neglected providing my grandparent's names. My grandmother was Elizabeth Lee, born on or about March 16, 1883, in S. Deerfield. Her parents were Phillip (sometimes spelled Philip) Lee and Bridget (aka Brigid, Bridgett) Ruddy. Both believed to have been born in Ireland. Hi, For years my grandmother, who was born in South Deerfield, claimed that her birth records had been lost in a fire, but others told me that the records did all exist in Deerfield. This week I had the chance to go to Town Hall and look through the birth records, and found that she must have been correct. I found record of her siblings, all born before her, and there were some entries listed for the year 1883, but she wasn't among them. I did check all the way up to the 1890s to see if she was listed anywhere else, but didn't find her. I did find a record of her marriage to my grandfather in 1912, her age at the time of her marriage confirms that she was born in 1883. Can anyone tell me about this fire, when it might have been, etc. My grandfather was listed as a Hotel Clerk at the time of the marriage, is there a way to check if it was the Deerfield Inn or perhaps the Hotel Warren? Can anyone recommend a book that has a nice history of Deerfield in the 1800s? My grandmother's parents arrived from Ireland sometime in the 1840s (I believe) so I'm most interested in the town from that point on. William was the youngest of the three brothers, being only 13 years of age when he came to America. Second Generation 2. William WHITE (-1) was born in 1666 in , , England. He died in 1750 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. In the year 1679, there sailed from the Isle of Wright, three brothers, bound for the then almost unknown county of North America. Their names were Peter, James and William White. William was the youngest of the three brothers, being only 13 years of age when he came to America. They were of Quaker parentage and belief and probably, had left England with the intentions of joining the Quakers that had, at that time, made a settlement at New Castle, Delaware. Peter and William soon went to Manhattan Island, (which at that time was merely a trading post), but only remained there a short time, when they sailed up the Hudson River to Esopus, Ulster Co, N.Y., which is situated about ten miles north of Poughkeepsie, and teh same distance southeast of Kingston. William married Elizabeth Meals, a daughter of one of the Dutch settlers of Esopus, N.Y. A family of seven children were born to them. Two daughters died and their names are unknown. They had been residents of Esopus, N.Y. for a period of sixty years, when in 1748, with their sons and their sons's wives and children, wit their flocks and their herds, they journeyed eastward to Connecticut. William WHITE and Elizabeth MEALS were married in Esopus, Ulster, New York. Elizabeth MEALS was the daughter of MEALS and Sarah. William WHITE and Elizabeth MEALS had the following children: +5 i. Harmon WHITE was born on 5 Jan 1753. Fourth Generation 10. Cornelia WHITE (Isaac-3, William-2, -1) was born in 1743 in Esopus, Ulster, New York. Cornelia WHITE and Gideon BRONSON were married on 16 Apr 1761. Gideon BRONSON (son of Timothy BRONSON and Abigail JENNER) was born on 3 Nov 1738 in Salisbury, Hartford, Connecticut. Was a general in the Revolutionary War. He made the first permanent settlement in Sunderland, Vt., in 1766, and was the first Town Clerk in 1796. Isaac WHITE (Isaac-3, William-2, -1) was born in 1745 in Esopus, Ulster, New York. He died in Aug 1818 in Eaton, Madison, New York. Issac White was born in Esopus, N.Y., in the year 1745, being three years of age when the family removed to Connecticut. The "White farm" of Salisbury, Ct., remained in possession of the family until six members of the fifth generation were born there. He relocated with his wife and daughter Cornelia; Benjamin White, with his wife and five children, ten souls in all In March 1805, the family bade good-bye to their kindred and friends and started on the long, wearisome journey. Isaac White's daughters, Abigal and Elizabeth, were married and remained in Connecticut; their sister Sarah also remained with them for a year, when she came to Eaton with a family by the name of Mills. Isaac White served as a scout for the continental army in the revolutionary war. Isaac WHITE and Sarah PECK were married in 1770 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. Sarah PECK (daughter of PECK and TOMLINSON) died in 1839 in Morrisville, Madison, New York. The widow of Isaac White had a home with her daughter, Mrs. Betsey Hollenbeck, who had some time previously come from Connecticut and was living on the farm owned by Col. Uriah Leland, situated on the Cherry Valley Turnpike, about one and one-half miles north of Morrisville. She died in 1839. Isaac WHITE and Sarah PECK had the following children: 23 i. Cornelia WHITE was born on 11 Feb 1771 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. He died in 1787 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. +24 ii. Benjamin WHITE (born on 23 Feb 1774). 25 iii. Sarah WHITE (born on 5 Aug 1781). 28 vi. Cornelia WHITE was born on 2 May 1792 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. Fifth Generation 24. Benjamin WHITE (Isaac-4, Isaac-3, William-2, -1) was born on 23 Feb 1774 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. He died on 30 Mar 1817 in Eaton, Madison, New York. During the winters of 1816 and 1817 Benjamin White was unable to leave the house, where March 30, 1817, he died, at the early age of 43 years. His remains lie in the burying ground at Easton Center, less tha a mile from the home where he had come only twelve years before expecting to spend many years with his parents, wife and children. In the fall of 1804, Benjamin White came on horseback from Connecticut to Eaton, Madison Co., N.Y., drawn thither, no doubt, by the alluring reports that had reached him of the fertile farms that wer for sale in the valley of the Chenango river. Before he returned to Connecticut he bought a farm of 100 or more acres, lying about two miles north of the village of Eaton, or Log City, as the hamlet of half a dozen houses was the designed. Isaac White, who held the title to the old home in Connecticut, sold the farm there, consisting of 74 acres, to Nathaniel Church, for the consideration of $1,664,34. In March 1805, they relocated to to Eaton, N.Y. The family of Benjamin White removed to New Hartford, N.Y., where the girls who were of sufficient age found employment in the cotton mills of that place. She died on 20 Sep 1842 in Eaton, Madison, New York. Sarah WHITE and Ephraim GOODELL were married on 25 Mar 1807 in Eaton, Madison, New York. Ephraim GOODELL (son of John GOODELL and Abigail NEWTON) was born on 28 Aug 1772 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts. He died on 10 Jun 1839 in Eaton, Madison, New York. 15. Benjamin Franklin GOODELL (Ephraim-2, John-1) was born on 15 Dec 1818 in Eaton, Madison, New York. He died on 14 Jun 1882 in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York. He shared with his brother, George W., the farm formerly occupied by his father, both families living in the same house until April 1856, whe he sold his share to his brother, and removed to Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where his brother, Hannibal Goodell, was living. In 1869 he came back to New York and bought a farm in the town of Ridgeway, N.Y. situated about two miles from the one occupied by his brother George, who had come there from Eaton a short time before. After a few months' sickness with heart and lung trouble, he died on the morning of June 14, 1882. Benjamin Franklin GOODELL and Philinda PIERCE were married on 12 Nov 1846. Romanzo PIERCE died on 6 Oct 1896 in Yates, Orleans, New York. He was born in Eaton, Madison, New York.
