First Generation 1. Roswell NICHOLS was born on 9 Dec 1806 in Charlemont, Franklin, Massachusetts.1,2 Genealogy Records of the Descendants of David Johnson of Leominster, Mass., Compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson, Printed by Godfrey & Crandall, Milwaukee, Wisc., 1876. p. 28. Residence: St. George, Ottawa County, Ohio. History of Huron & Erie Counties, Ohio. p. 518. Born at Charmount, Franklin, Mass. Here he lived, battling with the stern realities of New England farm life, until he was twenty-eight years of age. He was married to Achsah Scott, January 16, 1831. They commenced their married life at Charmount, where they lived three years, from which place in May, 1834, they moved to Northfield, Ohio, where they remained ten years, and then moved to North Bass, one of the Bass islands, in Lake Erie. They arrived here in a sail boat, May 22, 1844. The family consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Nichols, with one child, and Mrs. Nichols' mother. They were the first family who settled upon the island, and were the only family for five years. Here they commenced actual pioneer life, with all its hardships and privations, located as they were on an island isolated from the outside world. In the following September, Mrs. Nichols' mother went back to Northfield, and for five months, Mrs. Nichols saw no woman's face save her own. Thus, almost solitary and alone, did they live for five years, until another family made its appearance on the island. They had remained but a short time on the island when Dr. C. D. Townsend, who now lives upon the island, then a young man, made his appearance, as agent for A. Champion, of Rochester, New York, who then owned the island. Of this agent, Mr. Nichols leased the whole island, consisting of about eight hundred acres, for a term of ten years, the consideration being that he (Nichols) should pay the taxes. A few years later, Mr. Nichols bought of Horace Kelley, who had purchased he island, one hundred and fourteen acres of land, at a little less than five dollars per acre. Upon this, he built a residence, where they now live. Mr. and Mrs. Nichols are living quietly in the enjoyment of their pleasant island home, surrounded by many neighbors and friends, as the rich reward of their early toil and labor. Roswell NICHOLS and Achsah SCOTT were married in Jun 1833.3,4 Achsah SCOTT (daughter of James SCOTT and Achsah DICKINSON) was born on 29 Mar 1806 in Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire.2 Roswell NICHOLS and Achsah SCOTT had the following children: +2 i. He has to grapple with all the various elements of mind, with wickedness and error, and talk kindly and reason strongly with all. I could tell you of being kicked out of doors, and the fact bringing all the Unviersalists around to hear me preach the next Sabbath; of mock meetings, and of spies sent over to our meetings to get something to mock at and their being detained, captured, and, by the grace of God, made new men; of a man getting up in a public congregation and making voluntary confession for his yesterday's abuse of me. But let one example of confession suffice tor the whole. One very severe Saturday night, just as the clock struck twelve, some one knocked at my door very loud. On opening the door a tall figure stood there. 'Mr._____,' said he, 'will you forgive me?' Certainly, but who are you" said I. 'O, that wicked___! ___.' naming himself, 'that has made you so much trouble' He had opposed me in every possible way for two years, and now had come through the cold for two miles, at dead of a tedious night, to ask my forgiveness. I invited him in, conversed and prayed with him. He is now a very consistent member of he Church." Mr. Marsh has published several sermons. "Homo sui generis," living to great age, daring to think and original in his thought, very familiar with his Bible, removed from his church as a "separatist" i.e. forced to "separate" became holding to immersion, very literal in interpretation and therefore finding abundant proof of the present-utter unconsciousness of all the dead until the constantly expected second advent and last trump. He was much interested in Marsh genealogy, a venerable attendant at serveral of our annual meetings, remembering very many who passed to distant states or other worlds long ago, a veritable Yankee "old Mortality" with quiet persistence visiting many old graveyards and recording for our use forgotten dates and names. He treasured his grandfather's old huge account book, begun in 1754 and gave us to copy its valuable dates and names. In his old age his home was mainly at Northfield, Mass., where he died. x. Hello List, The Deerfield paper The Republican wrote an article about changing the memorial markers from the Deerfield massacres. The reporter, Elizabeth Calvert would like to do a story about opposition to changing the markers from descendents of Deerfield's massacres. She interviewed me. She needs others. My position was that the old ones should stay as is and if the Indians wanted to put up new ones with their version, that's fine too. But to not take down the old ones. If any of you would like to e-mail her, her address is: [email protected] Thank you, Susan Roberts
Paul, did I send you my transcription of Parker Dole's will when we last corresponded about the Colman/Dole family? Would you like it? Sara Campbell

Published by The Town of Buckland, Buckland, Mass. 1937. p. 502 In 1773 he moved to that part of Charlemont afterwards Buckland. In 1796 he was sent to the Governor's Council; a useful and honored man whose influence was a great factor in shaping the early destinies of Buckland. He owned and operated a gristmill for a short time but the greater part of life was spent as a farmer. Was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Genealogy Records of the Descendants of David Johnson of Leominster, Mass., Compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson, Printed by Godfrey & Crandall, Milwaukee, Wisc., 1876. p. 6. He resided in Leominster, Mass., until 1773, when he emigrated to Charlemont, Mass., where he purchased land. The deed was given by Jonathan White of Leominster, and Joseph Wilder, of Lancaster, on the 15th day of December, in the 13th year of His Majesty's reign, A.D. 1773. The description of the is as follows: "One hundred acres of land, in Charlemont, in the county of Hampshire, in the southeast part of said town, on the south line of which it is bounded south; on the north it is bounded by Mr. Taylor's farm; on the east it is bounded on the public land; on the west it is bounded on Mr. Taylor's other farm, or the farm called Clesson's farm." It would be difficult, I think, for a surveyor, from this description, to find that land now. When Buckland was incorporated in 1778, this land was included in that town. He owned a grist mill for a short time in the north part of the town, but the greater part of his life was spent in farming. He contributed largely of his influence in shaping the character of the new town, and was a prominent man, not only in civil affairs, but also in the church. Lt. I need help. I am working from a handwritten pedigree constructed on family records and oral history; what I have been able to find has been correct, but now I'm at a dead end. To confuse things even more, there are Scotts on both sides of the pedigree. My head is spinning. James Scott (Oct. 19, 1776) was born in Sunderland MA; he married Achsah Dickenson (or Dickinson), who was born in 1777, place not known. Their fourth daughter, also Achsah, born in 1806, possibly in NH, married Roswell Nichols of Charleton MA on Jan 16, 1831. Other children of James Scott and Achsah Dickenson were: Jerusha, 1800; Bathsheba, 1802; Sarah, 1804; Achsah, 1806; James, 1808; Consider, 1810; Erastus, 1812; Samuel 1814; Tryphena, 1816; and Horace, 1819. My question is: Who is James? And only because I think it is interesting: Roswell and Achsah Scott Nichols lived in Charlemont for three years before moving to Northfield Ohio. They lived there for 10 years, then packed their worldly possessions, two children - and Achsah's mother - onto a sailboat, and moved to Isle St. George in Lake Erie, where they were the sole residents for the next 5 years. The island was then developed by wine-makers. Any help in finding James' parents would be greatly appreciated.
First Generation 1. Flora J. WHITE was born on 4 Apr 1860 in Heath, Franklin, Massachusetts. 1785 - 1935 Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Town of Heath, Mass., Edited by Howard Chandler Robbins, Published by The Heath Historical Society. It will long be remembered as the crowning event of that summer and for many summers. She also arranged the Chinese entertainment later given on the lawn of their home on Plover Hill. This was perfect in every way, and each detail was worked out to a nicety that despoke a master-mind in planning like functions. Miss Flora and Miss Mary (May) were the chief instigators of the Heath Historical Society which was begun about 1900, also of the heath Agricultural Fair Association, together with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Paine, which began in 1916. White's Turnpike; also the turnpike from Athol to Boston called the Fifth Massachusetts turnpike. He built, too, a clothing mill in Mill Hollow and manufactured woolen cloth and built many other roads and public buildings. He lived first and built the first house on the place afterward sold by him to Col. Hugh Maxwell, the farm which adjoins the south Cemetery, now owned by Fred Coates. He Asaph White, bought this place of Dependence Thayer in 1772. In that deed was included the following " a reserve is made for necessary roads as likewise a reserve of one acre as a burying-place for use of town forever where the dead are now buried to lye 8 rods upon road, and the owner is to have the privilege of pasturing said place with horese, sheep, and calves but no other creatures, he maintaining the same fence as he must do if there were no burying place thereon." Also, "dividing the water so as to leave a good watering place in that part (east end) of the lot." In the deed of White to Maxwell in 1776, this watering place is designated as "Whittemore Spring" altho no deed is on record, either to Whittemore or from Whittemore. After selling this farm to Col. He moved to Erving sometime after 1800 and was the first settler of that town, building there a house, a mill and a dam across Miller's River. His daughter Lucretia went with her father, so was the first woman to keep house in the new town and kept the first school. The founding of a town was but an ordinary job for a man of Col. Lt. Hi folks, I am seeking someone living close to or planning to travel soon to Shutesbury, Franklin County, Massachusetts. As I am seeking information on the location of a cemetery and stone for a Mrs. William King and if possible William King himself who has not been located. The following is what I know at this time: I know that William King first married Hannah Mitchell in Salem about 1740 and they had two children. Some researchers have laid the groundwork that has him married second to Mary Andrews daughter of Captain Nathaniel and Mary (Higginson) Andrews. Something had been niggling at me to try to prove or disprove this theory as there were 7 William King's all cousins or uncles who could have married this particular Mary Andrews. I have disproved it because I found a list of the children by William King and Mary Andrews and they are not the same as the children listed by my William King. I believe that the William King who married Mary Andrews is the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Marsh or the second marriage to Widow Elizabeth ?) King. Also Mary Andrews had died in 1759 while the wife of my William had the children Amos Nahum born 1756, Sarah born 1759, Jonathan born 1761 all in New Salem and then Stephen born after in Shutesbury so you see the mother of these children cannot be [that] Mary Andrews. I have not yet found a second Mary Andrews however. What I now am pursuing is just who is the second wife of William King son of Jonathan and Sarah (Cooke) King? That is if there is a second Mrs. William King of course. I believe but am not sure that there was a second marriage based only on the age that Hannah would have been if she had the children Hannah and William Jr. in 1741 and 1743 then the four younger children starting in 1756. I know that she was living when they moved from one of the homes in New Salem owned by his cousin Amos Nahum Foster and his second wife Abigail King (sister to William King) on to Shutesbury. William then returned to New Salem where he is next listed as a widower later and lived out his life once again with the Foster's. Can you help? I believe that Mrs. King is probably interred at Shutesbury and I have yet to find my William born 1710 interred anywhere but Shutesbury has not been checked as of this time. I have had a few local people scouting the New Salem area looking for them in the past. Thank you in advance. I am still located at PO Box 352, Blue River, Oregon 97413. -- Daniel David Lewis Frommherz Come visit my web site www.McKenzieValleyMarket.com please write and tell me what you think of it. In 1900, I also find Peter Hawthorne and Agnes as a married couple with children (as well as Peter's father Peter next door); but by 1910, he is no longer in Massachusetts, it appears. Would there be any connection to the Frederick D. Johnson, Amos Johnson, E. Johnson who were all in Greenfield, Wisconsin in 1859? There also is a C.W. Kellog nearby. For my GILBERT and SENIOR families there seems to be a tie between Northfield (Litchfield), Connecticut, Baraboo or Greenfield, Wisconsin and Buckland, Massechusets but I can't quite pinpoint it. My ancestor Linus T. Gilbert bought property from Frederick D. Johnson in Sept. 1859. Witnesses were M.M.Johnson and (??) Crandell (Justice of the Peace). Another name on the mortgage is S. P. Woodward. The Woodward name is another one that I have seen in the vacinity of all these places. While this may be a wild goose chase, I thought I's see if anyone else can shed some light on any possible connections. Thank you, Ginny Echelberger

Lt. Josiah JOHNSON was born on 7 Mar 1746 in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts. He died on 21 Feb 1827 in Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts. He was buried in Buckland Center Cemetery, Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts. The History of Buckland 1779 - 1935 by Fannie Shaw Kendrick & Lucy Cutler Kellogg. Lt. He died on 5 Jul 1851 in Guntoor, India. A History of the Churches & Ministers and of Franklin Association, Franklin County, Mass. by Rev. Theophilus Packard, Jr., Published by S.K. Whipple and Company, 100 Washington Street, Boston, Mass. 1854. p. 271. Rev. Walter Gunn was born in Montague, June 27, 1815, and removed to Carlisle, N.Y., in 1833; in 1837 he joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church; graduated at Union in 1840; studied theology in the Seminary at Gettysburgh, Penn.; was licensed Sept. 6, 1842, by the Lutheran Synod; was appointed a missionary to the heathen in the Lutheran Connexion, May 25, 1843; was married to Miss L. Pultz of New York; was ordained as a missionary at Johnstown, N.Y. Sept. 5, 1843, and the sermon was by Rev. J. Z. Senderling; embarked from Boston in November 1843; arrived at Guntoor, India, June 18, 1844, where he lived and labored for the salvation of the heathen till his last sickness and death. He died with the consumption. Two days before his death, being asked if he had any fears, he replied, "None at all - all is bright and glorious." Respecting his two children, he said to his wife, "Train up the children for Christ." On the day of his death he said, "If this could be my last d! ay, oh how delightful." The native converts watched with the corpse, and sung during the time, "Rock of Ages cleft for me." His Memoir has been published by Rev. G. A. Lintner, D.D., in a little volume of 156 pages, form which the following sentences are taken: "Mr. Gunn devoted himself to the work of foreign missions from a principle of love to his divine Master, and a sincere regard for his glory." "He was eminently a man of prayer." "Our departed brother had an ardent love for souls, and a predominant desire for the salvation of the heathen." The following is from his diary, viz.: "Our desires to labor among the heathen are the same that they were between five and six years ago when we left the shores of our native land. Here, if it please God, we wish to spend the energies of our body and mind, to preach, to pray, to labor, and to die. We have embarked our all in the cause, and we regret not the decision." He died in Guntoor, India, July 5, 1851, aged 36. His widow still survives, a laborer in the foreign field. Though Mr. Gunn became a Lutheran after his removal from Montague, yet as the Evangelical Lutheran Church so nearly agrees in its main features with Orthodox Congregational churches, he is, for conveniences sake, reckoned among the Congregational sons of Montague. An error occurs in his memoir in giving Carlisle, N.Y. as his birthplace, instead of Montague, Mass. Genealogy Records of the Descendants of David Johnson of Leominster, Mass., Compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson, Printed by Godfrey & Crandall, Milwaukee, Wisc., 1876. p. 20. He was a Lutheran minister, and went to India as a missionary, where he died. He contributed largely of his influence in shaping the character of the new town, and was a prominent man, not only in civil affairs, but also in the church. v.
