I do have the Guilford book and have been interested in those Stantons because they sold land to my relatives, but have never been able to find anything about them. Here's what the book says: In 1790 there were three Stantons in Guilford: Moses with 10 in household, Joseph with 8 and Benjamin with 3. Lot #26 was settled by Joseph Stanton, who sold it to Joseph Gaines in 1790. In 1785 Benjamin and and Joseph Stanton deeded it to Isaac Tubbs, and in 1795 Joseph and William Stantion sell it to Joseph Gaines. The book seems to imply that it's the same 100 acres of lot 26 all 3 times, though that makes little sense. But it does suggest that Benjamin, William and Joseph were all related. How Moses fits in I have no idea. But I got interested because both Tubbs and Gaines of Guilford are in my family. There was a Joseph Burrows who settled lot 180, just across the border from Leyden and a James Burrows in 1790 with 4 in household. Lots of other Burrows in book. The Rev. Moses Brown who was the African-American who married Catherine Ross, a Narragansett Indian, seems a fascinating character--apparently he later settled the town of Chilton Wisconsin and seems to have helped runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. He was born in RI; do you think he could have been n VT in 1790? I'd love to know more. Helga Andrews
Hi Tamara, Sorry, I do not have the STANTON family listed in the 11 pages I have here of almost 500 pages in the "Official History of GUILFORD, VERMONT 1678-1961", Edited by Broad Brook Grange No. 151, 1961. Jan Jordan
Jan- Could I possibly ask you to peek into your History of Guilford for any mention of my Stanton family? Moses Stanton, b. est. bet. 1742-1762, maybe in Vermont? Desire (maiden name unknown) b. bef. 1758, d. bet. 1820-1830, probably Leyden, MA married bef. 1776? (birth of oldest known child) known children: Sarah Stanton, b. 1776, d. 24 Aug 1857, Leyden, MA Eunice Stanton, b. 1782, d. 1812, Leyden, MA, buried Leyden, MA Phebe Stanton, b. 12 Nov 1783 in Guilford, VT, d. 30 Aug 1849, Leyden, MA Esther Stanton, b. 4 Dec 1785, Guilford, VT, 16 Mar 1856, Leyden, MA, buried Leyden, MA To my knowledge, none of these 4 daughters ever married (according to Leyden death records--they were listed as "single", not "widowed"). Esther had a son named George W. Stanton whose father was Mr. Burrows (according to Leyden birth records), but they were not married. I am descended from George. I have Desire, her daughters, and George in the 1820 Census for Leyden, and Esther is head of household by 1830. In 1840, George W. Stanton has a female in his household that is Esther's age. By 1850, Esther (age 64, born VT) is head of household and her sister Sarah, (age 73, born CT, pauper) is still living with her, as is a Benjamin Stanton, (age 72, born CT), and Lucy Green, (age 70, born MA, pauper). Benjamin was close to this family because he was the informant on some of the death records, but his relationship to the women is still unknown. Before 1820 is where I get stuck. There is a Moses Stanton in the 1800 and 1810 census in Providence, RI, and he and his family are listed as black. This could be a possibility because he may have been Native American. In 1790, I find a Moses Stanton and family in Guilford, VT, again listed as black. Also, in transcriptions of RI land records, I find Moses Stanton, colored man, buying and selling land in Richmond and Charlestown, RI in 1840, also with another colored man, William Bundy. This could be my Moses Stanton, but I can't tell for sure. Also, in the probate of 1791, there is a mention of a Mary Stanton and her son Moses Stanton, alias Babcock. Can anyone help? I have been stuck on this one for quite awhile. Stanton is a prominent name in the Narragansett tribe in Providence RI, and I feel that Moses may have been at least part Native American, as he is listed as a "free colored person" in various records. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions! Tamara -----Original Message----- From: Jan J. Hi Maura, Thanks for your quick reply. I'm seeking elusive Lydia WEBSTER's birth and marriage confirmation to find out where she was born and who her parent's were. Lydia WEBSTER, was born about 1781, in MA, CT, NH, NY, RI, or VT, married 27 Sept. 1804 James MOWRY in Pomfret, CT, and died 16 Feb. 1847 in Guilford, VT; they are buried in Wilkins Hill District #1 Cemetery in Guilford, Windham, Vt. Children born in Guilford, Vermont: 1) Lucius Potter MOWRY b. 12 Oct. 1806, Guilford, Windham, VT, married 1) 13 Dec. 1827 Desire KENYON [KINYON] my 3rd great grandmother, married 2) Lucy AVERY, and he died 1888. 2) Rev. James Wheaton MOWRY b. 20 April 1808, Guilford, Windham, VT, a noted Methodist minister, d. after April 1878. 3) William Pitt MOWRY b. 5 May 1809, Guilford, Windham, VT, and died in Windsor Locks, Hartford, CT. 4) Lydia MOWRY b. 24 1811 Guilford, Windham, Vt., was m. 1834 J. Barney SHEPHARDSON by Henry J. WOOLEY, Preacher, and she died 4 Oct. 1844. 5) Nelson MOWRY, Guilford, Windham, VT b. 19 Nov. 1813, m. Sophia L. SILVER and died in Wilbra, Hampden, MA. Children born in Leyden, Massachusetts: 6) Ann B. MOWRY b. 24 Aug. 1820 [have photocopy of birth certificate], Leyden, Franklin Co., MA, m. 21 Aug. 1839 Horace Wilkins LYNDE [LINDE], and she died in 1905. and 7) George B. MOWRY b. 1825, Leyden, Franklin Co., MA, and died young between 1827 and 1829. I have written to Guilford, VT; Leyden and Colrain, MA, Town Clerks for vital records but to no avail and checked in Abby Hemenway's "VERMONT GAZETTEER". "The Descendants of Nathanial Mowry of Rhode Island" written by William A. Mowry; Sidney S. Rider, Publisher; Providence, RI, 1878, p. 178, has a listing for the marriage on 27 Sept 1804. I found this same date for Lydia WEBSTER and James MOWRY's marriage listed in a Church of the Latter Day Saints sealed record but cannot view it. It is not in the Barbour Collection. Another source for this marriage date and place is the book "Official History of Guilford, Vermont, 1678-1961" page 485 which I've seen. Also, Addie with the Guilford Historical Society said that the Methodist Episcopal Church records in Green River, VT (near Guilford, VT) where they were members were destroyed in a fire. I've posted on Rootsweb, Ancestry.com, and GenForum. Also, I've had people personally check the marriage records in Pomfret, Conn, as well as Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT (just in case there was a mistake in the state name recorded). No one has been able to find a record. I've checked out a Lydia WEBSTER in the right time period from Cabot, VT, in Abby Hemenway's "VERMONT GAZATTEER". However, the Cabot Town Clerk office's old records were destroyed in a fire. There is a Stephen Webster family listed in Pomfret CT in the 1790 and 1800 censuses, with a houseful of children. At the time of the 1810 census (when Lydia would have been gone, because of 1804 marriage) the ENTIRE FAMILY HAD VANISHED. They have not shown up in any other New England state's censuses for 1810 -- Where did they go? And is there any evidence they were Lydia's family? Lydia WEBSTER is my 4th great grandmother. ONE NOTE: Family lore has it that Lydia WEBSTER is related to Noah WEBSTER but so far no connection. If you or anyone has any bits of research they've uncovered, or any questions for me to clarify, please let me know. I really don't know where to look next! Anxiously awaiting your help, Jan Jordan in Northern VT <<Mowry's are my direct line, Mehitable 1644 (descends from immigrant Roger back to George) married a Kingsley. Hi, I'm seeking an obituary in either Northern MA or Southern VT, for LYDIA WEBSTER MOWRY (Mrs. JAMES), who died 16 Feb. 1847, in Guilford, Windham Co., Vermont, and is buried in Wilkins Hill District No. 1 Cemetery in Guilford, Windham Co., Vt. She lived in both Leyden, Franklin County, Mass. and Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. Obits have already been searched at the "Brattleboro Reformer" and "Vermont Phoenix". I'm wondering if a Massachusetts newspaper might also have carried notices of her death. THANK :-) YOU VERY much for any help here. See death notice below for LYDIA MOWRY nee WEBSTER, my maternal 4th great grandmother. Jan Jordan in Vermont "VERMONT PHOENIX" [Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont] March 4, 1847, page 3" 'In Guilford, Windham County, VT, on the 16th ult, Mrs. Lydia MOWRY, wife of Mr. James MOWRY, aged 66 years died.' (NOTE: reference to ult. refers to the previous month. LYDIA died on February 16, 1847.)
Thanks to the wonderful people on this list who have added to my knowledge of the Markhams. Unfortunately, no one has found them in 1860. And as someone pointed out, the graves that we saw in Hoosick Falls must belong to Harriet/Hattie and her brother and wife, not her parents. Thanks to all. I shall have to start searching in a different direction. Marion Markham
If anyone has access to the 1860 or 1870 census for Conway, could you please look up Markhams, probably in Conway. Their daughter Harriet was born there in 1864. However, a 1900 census from Hoosick Falls, NY confuses the issue about who her parents were. I thought she was the daughter of Emerson Preston Markham, with whom she is buried, but the dates don't add up. Help please? Marion Markham
Searching for information about the family of Harriet Markham, born Dec. 4, 1864 in Conway. She married B. Frank Agan when she was about 30 but I have no idea if they were married in MA or elsewhere, since her family moved to Hoosick Falls, NY and she is buried there. Marion Markham

Good morning, Have you looked in the multi-volume set entitled Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War? If they are listed, copy the page, along with the title page of the volume you use, and include that as proof of service. The Genealogy Dept. (NSDAR) accepts this work as proof of service. I am looking at the History of Bernardston, p. 353, and the brief genealogy for Samuel Connable noted he "served as private Apr. 20 to May 1, 1775, etc. " The wording sounds suspiciously like what you would find in Mass. Soldiers and Sailors, so suspect you will find Samuel Connable listed in that work. Same source, p. 356 discusses John Connable, gives his military experience as well as being chosen to various town offices including "Committee of Inspection 1775." Civic service works also. I feel confident you will find both these men listed in the above mentioned reference work. That will provide their service. If you need further help contact me personally. I am State Regent of Oregon, NSDAR, in addition to being a certified genealogist. Hope this helps. Joan Joan A. He was a master mariner, and nine of his eleven sons were whalemen, and one of them was killed in the fishery, his father being in the command of the boat. In those days the whales were so plenty that the fishing was carried on in open boats from the shore. One of his descendants relates the tradition, that when his youngest daughter was born, the old man was so disappointed that it was not a son, that he wept because he yet lacked one boy to make up the crew of two whale boats. In a bible record written by James Clark, son of Scotto Clark, 2d, of Harwich, and now in the possession of Mrs. Francis Howard, of Boston, his father's birthdate is Nov. 8, 1710, and his mothers birthdate Feb. 14, 1714, which differ from the dates listed in the book. Records of the Descendants of Thomas Clarke, Plymouth 1623 - 1697, Compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson, Published by the compiled, North Greenfield, Wisconsin, 1884. p. 63. Inventor, artist and astronomer. He occupies a high position among distinguished men in both hemispheres. Was born among the hills in Ashfield, Mass. Nature designed him for a great artist, and in the development of his native talents, nature's design was not frustrated. Schools did but little to bring to light his inherent powers. The common school of a sparsely populated district was all the seminary of learning that ever opened its portals to him; yet such has been his perseverance, and his personal effort in art and in science, that our colleges have conferred on him high degrees of honor in consideration of his great attainments, and crowned heads in the old world have recognized his superiority as the greatest telescope maker of the age. The steps by which he ascended to his hig position in art may be seen in the following summary of events in his life. In 1821, commenced copper-plate engraving, and soon after, miniature and portriat painting. In 1826-27 engraving for calico printing at Lowell, Mass. From 1827 to 1829, engraving at Providence, R.I. From 1829 to 1832 engraving, and painting miniatures, in New York. 1832 - 35 at Fall River. 1835 - 36, painted minatures in Boston. Settled in Cambridge, Mass., 1836, but kept open a studio in Boston unitl 1860. Meanwhile (commencing in 1845) he engaged with his son George in the working of lenses for telescopes, first reflectors, but afterwards refactos, the latter a very difficult thing, but with success. From 1852 to 1860 discovered twenty new double stars. In 1859 went to England, by initataion of Rev. W. R. Dawes, a distinguished astronomer, of Haddenham, Thame. In the observatory of Mr. Dawes with one of his own telescopes, discovered five new double stars, among them 99 Herculis. From that time until now (1883) he and his sons have been engaged i the Dearbor! n tower at Chicago, with which his son Alvan G. discovered teh companion of Sirius; another is mounted in the Naval Observatory at Washington, D.C., with which Prof. Hall discovered the satellites of Mars. But their last great work is the 30 inch objec glass made for the government of Russia on the order of Dr. Otto Struve, the Royal Astronomer. Although Mr. Clark has attained his greatest distinction in the field of art, yeat as an astronomer he ranks high. He gleaned the northern heavens, which had been minutely harvested by the Struves, and the result was the discovery, by himself and his son Alvan G., of some 40 new double stars, and among them the compainon of Sirius. He invented a new micrometer, an instrument of great value to astronomers, and by means of an invention of his own has compared the magnitude of a Lyrae with our sun, arriving at a result that will give him rank among standard astronomers and mathematicians. Published by The Town of Buckland, Buckland, Mass. 1937. p. 502 In 1773 he moved to that part of Charlemont afterwards Buckland. In 1796 he was sent to the Governor's Council; a useful and honored man whose influence was a great factor in shaping the early destinies of Buckland. He owned and operated a gristmill for a short time but the greater part of life was spent as a farmer. Was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Genealogy Records of the Descendants of David Johnson of Leominster, Mass., Compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson, Printed by Godfrey & Crandall, Milwaukee, Wisc., 1876. p. 6. He resided in Leominster, Mass., until 1773, when he emigrated to Charlemont, Mass., where he purchased land. The deed was given by Jonathan White of Leominster, and Joseph Wilder, of Lancaster, on the 15th day of December, in the 13th year of His Majesty's reign, A.D. 1773. The description of the is as follows: "One hundred acres of land, in Charlemont, in the county of Hampshire, in the southeast part of said town, on the south line of which it is bounded south; on the north it is bounded by Mr. Taylor's farm; on the east it is bounded on the public land; on the west it is bounded on Mr. Taylor's other farm, or the farm called Clesson's farm." It would be difficult, I think, for a surveyor, from this description, to find that land now. When Buckland was incorporated in 1778, this land was included in that town. He owned a grist mill for a short time in the north part of the town, but the greater part of his life was spent in farming. He contributed largely of his influence in shaping the character of the new town, and was a prominent man, not only in civil affairs, but also in the church. Lt. Daniel was working in manufacturing (presumably blacksmithing) in Florida in Berkshire County to the west of Ashfield. At 63 years old, he was no longer working, but his four youngest sons (ages 16-29) were living at home and all working as cabinetmakers. Daniel and Electa had been married close to 50 years when she died. About four years later, when Daniel was 71 years old, he married Betsey, a 66-year-old spinster from Ashfield. Five weeks later Betsey died of a stroke. Eight months later he married again, this time to Nancy Hill, another Ashfield spinster, but younger. Nancy was 55.
