    3. The PDF file which is over 600 pages seems to be to large to pass through most of the servers for readers on the list. 3. I've developed an acrobat file which is very large. I'm sure it can pass through many of the servers utilized by many of the readers. It's a little over 600 pages with notes sources and index. I will make the PDF available for those that might have an interest in the descendants of Godfrey Nims. It includes the research I've merged into the database over the years on many of the female lines in addition to the direct descendants of male lines. I've also forwarded it to the LDS site, however, their running a little slow in processing submissions so the complete file may not be available on line for 6 - 8 months. While the focus of the research remains Franklin County, Mass. this lines include many of the families that resided in surrounding counties, Vermont, New York and westward. Contact me if you'd like a copy of the PDF. Regards, Paul W. Allred 54. 1. Townsend family in Conway
    2. I recently found a photograph of the family of Harvey G Townsend, wife Ada M Townsend, and two sons, James & Andrew. There is no date, but from the clothing, it appears the photo was taken early in the 20th century. James appears to be around 6 years old, and the baby Andrew about 6 months old. The photo was made by Sheldon Studio of Northampton, Mass. It was found in the belongings of Arlene Cranson (1902-1996), who grew up in Conway, and graduated from Smith School in Northampton around 1920. I'm wondering what the connection was between the Townsend & Cranson families. Perhaps Arlene & Ada were classmates or neighbors? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Syl in Florida

Served in the Indian and Revolutionary wars; was a trader in Greenfield about 15 years, during which time he acquired land in Bernardston and other towns. About 1792-3, he took up his residence here, but soon returned to Greenfield. His farm was on South street, and is now owned by Mr. Harris. In the Greenfield paper, dated Dec. 13, 1802, appears this advertisement. FOR SALE. Noted Tavern and Farm adjoining, 5 miles from Greenfield Street on the Stage Road to Vermont, now occupied by John Pinks. 126 acres of land, three dwelling houses, two barns, three excellent wells. The Tavern house almost new. For terms of sale apply to Reul Willard, Greenfield. Presumably the hoped for sale did not take place, for about 1805, Ruel Willard again took up his residence in town at his "farm and tavern stand," where he died May 24, 1806. He left home in the morning apparently well, a short time after, ws found dying about a half mile from his house. It was supposed that being taken suddenly ill, he must have fallen from his horse. In memory of Granney Martha Morrison wife of Capt. Hugh Morrison died 13 Jan. 1772, in the 70 year. Martha MC CRELLIS and Hugh MORRISON were married about 1723 in , , Ireland. Hugh MORRISON died about 1765 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. The Early Setlers of Colrain, Massachusetts, by Charles H. McClellan, W. S. Carson, Printer, Greenfield, Mass. 1885. p. 72 Hugh Morrison died, I think, not far from 1765, though the date of his death and place of his burial, cannot be determined, as no stone marks his grave. His wife died in 1772, aged 70 years; and a nameless grave, just to the north of her's, in the old burying ground, is no doubt, the last resting place of Capt. Hugh Morrison; one of Colrain's best and bravest veterans. He was born in Londonderry, , Ireland. He was buried in Chandler Hill Cemetery, Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. A History of Colrain, Massachusetts, with Genealogies of Early Families, by Lois McClellan Patrie. p. 114 Hugh of Londonderry, N.H. in 1739 bought 4 lots in the first division of Colrain with their accompanying rights to 400 acres of undivided land in the second division. There were purchased from the proprietors. I do not belive he came to Colrain to live until some time after he purchased of Samuel Renkins of Londonderry 2 home lots in the first division with 200 acres of undivided land, on Feb. 8, 1744. There is no mention of Hugh in the early records of the town. Later that same year he bought lot 59 in the 3rd rang (then "of Colrain") from James Berry of Colrain. From then on, the canny fellow bought land apparently of anyone who had land to sell, sometimes alone, sometimes with son John or Samuel. His home during the Indian War of the fifties stood where Avery's farm now stands, and, because it was also a fort, is marked with a stone tablet. The Early Setlers of Colrain, Massachusetts, by Charles H. McClellan, W. S. Carson, Printer, Greenfield, Mass. 1885. p. 19 Hugh Morrison and his son David bought land in the town in the summer of 1739, David buying the two south lots of what is known as the Morrison tract, and his father the three lots next north, and also lot No. 46 in the second range, but it was not till nine years later, that he bought the north lot of that tract, which was the home lot of John Henry Senior, afterward known as the McCullock place, where Ansell McClellan lately lived,) and where he (Henry) had settled, probably about the same time as did the Morrisons his heighbors on the south. The Early Setlers of Colrain, Massachusetts, by Charles H. McClellan, W. S. Carson, Printer, Greenfield, Mass. 1885. p. 71 It is probable that Hugh Morrison was the largest owner of land in town in those early times; and to him the settlers were greatly indebted for his public spirti and enterprise. He came here form Londonderry, New Hampshire, probably in 1739, having emigrated from the north of Ireland to that place about 1725 or 6. He and his brother-in-law, John Henry, in settling here, seemed to prefer going outside of the regular lots, and bought land up in the woods, on what was then the northern frontier of the town, and where the fort was soon after located. Martha MC CRELLIS and Hugh MORRISON had the following children: 12 i. David MORRISON was born about 1721. He died about 1746 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. The Early Setlers of Colrain, Massachusetts, by Charles H. McClellan, W. S. Carson, Printer, Greenfield, Mass. 1885. p. 27. During this same year (1746) David, son of Captain Hugh Morrison, disappeard, and no tidings seem ever afterward to have been had of him. He was a young man, probably 25 to 28 years old or thereabout, he went out a short distance from the house or fort to shoot a hawk, the Indians surprised and captured him; it being impossible to pursue and overtake them in time to accomplish his rescue. +13 ii. John MORRISON (born in 1728). 14 iii. Robert MORRISON was born about 1726. Was a soldier in the Indian War. +15 iv. Martha MORRISON (born on 29 Jun 1740). +16 v. Samuel MORRISON (born on 26 Sep 1742). 4. Mary MC CRELLIS (John-1) was born about 1705 in , , Ireland. She died on 11 May 1802 in Leyden, Franklin, Massachusetts. Mary MC CRELLIS and FOSTER were married. Mary MC CRELLIS and FOSTER had the following children: 17 i. Margaret FOSTER. Mary MC CRELLIS and William WORKMAN were married in , , Ireland. Mary MC CRELLIS and William WORKMAN had the following children: +18 i. John WORKMAN (born about 1729). Mary MC CRELLIS and John HENRY were married. John HENRY (son of David HENRY) died in 1755 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. He was born in , , Ireland. The Early Setlers of Colrain, Massachusetts, by Charles H. McClellan, W. S. His wife was Mary McCrellis, sister of Martha, the wife of Hugh Morrison. He died about 1750, leaving five children. Mary MC CRELLIS and John HENRY had the following children: +19 i. William HENRY (born about 1734). 20 ii. Martha HENRY was born in 1737 in , , Ireland. +21 iii. Joseph HENRY (born on 13 Jun 1748). +22 iv. Andrew HENRY (born in 1751). 23 v. James HENRY. Mary MC CRELLIS and Richard ELLIS were married about 1772 in Deerfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Richard ELLIS was born on 16 Aug 1704 in Dublin, , Ireland. He died on 7 Oct 1797 in Ashfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was buried in Beldingville Cemetery, Ashfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. A History of Colrain, Massachusetts, with Genealogies of Early Families by Lois McClellan Patrie. p. 62. Richard, first of the family in America, was in Colrain only 13 years, and most of his descendants removed either to Theford, Vt., or Ellisburg, N.Y. Richard kept a store in colrain and was a prominent citizen during his short stay; also a few of his children married into Colrain families. This is therefore an abridge account of a rather lengthy family history. Richard Ellis when 13 years old was brought to Boston by a dishonest ship's captain and indentured to a miller for his passage money, although it had been paid in advance by his mother, and the captain had agreed to land him in Virgina where Richard had relatives. When 21 he went to Easton, Mass., where he married, then about 1740 he moved his family to Deerfield. About 1745 he became the first settler of Ashfield, then Huntstown. About 1764 he bought a lot in the first division of Colrain and established his general store and ashery. this was not successful, and about 1777 he returned to Ashfield. an account book of his store survives and contains the names of many of Colrain's early settlers. History of Deerfield, Volume II, by George Sheldon, Published by E. A. Hall & Co., Greenfield, MA, 1896. p. 153 Came over in 1717; lived in Boston and Easton, whence he remove about 1736; attempted a settled at Bratt., but in 1741, being then of Deerfield, he sold out his house lot No. 50, and meadow lands No. 8 there to John Alexander of Fort Dummer; may have lived a short time in Colrain; removed to Ashfield in 1750, and has been considered the first permanent settlement; in 1753 he sold home lot No. 23 in Ashfield to Samuel Smith of Northfield; he served in the last French war, acting as assistant commissary. Dec. 4, 1752, Elijah Williams, Town Clerk of Deerfield, charges Richard Ellis for one pound of power, 2 shillings, 8 pence, and "To publishing a Serteficate 1 shillings, 6 pence." In another account we find the wid. Mary Henry buying a white necklace in July, 1756, and in Dec. she was buying lace. 2. All I can interject is that New Salem and Shutesbury are tiny little towns with someone in the town halls only for certain hours , like Monday evenings. I have had good luck with land records, which sometimes illuminate relationships when abutting land owners intermarry.

    1. James Russell King
    2. Daniel David Lewis Frommherz
    3. Hi there list members, Concerning the name James Russel(l) King. This name is of my second great grandfather's older brother. It has been giving me fits for years. One of my cousins is sure that the middle name Russell had some connection to one of our ancestors wives. Up until recently we did not have a Russell surname possible in our lineup. This King family has been extensively researched until it gets rubbed raw. As of now it is well established that my William King born 1710 and is the son of Jonathan and Sarah (Cooke) King of Salem. Salem vital records connect him in papers filed in June 1719 as proof. It might possibly be by some mere chance that we might have a second marriage of William King to a Russell. It is William's grandson who named their son James Russell King. The James we are certain could be to honor his maternal grandfather James Alexander Norton of Canaan, Columbia county, New York and Madison County, Ohio. Or maybe not that is still a question unanswered at this time. I could be mistaken as I wasn't around to ask and neither was anyone else that I know. My grand aunt once upon a time had Nahum King's family bible. James Russel(l) King is the only child of 16 live births with a middle name male or female children that they raised. Historically we know that our William King married first Hannah Mitchell. Someone believes that she was an older woman in 1741 and they had two children. By the time that Hannah could have added more children who started with our Amos Nahum King born 1756 in New Salem, Hamilton County, Massachusetts she would have been more than 50 years old. Knowing this fact I figure that William must have married a second time but we don't know who that woman in a second marriage would be. The underlying reason is that for many years there was a William King, thought to be our William, who married about that time to Mary Andrews daughter of Captain Nathaniel and Mary (Higginson) Andrews of Salem. However recently I discovered that the Mary Andrews who married William had to be another William King who turns out to be the son of Samuel and Elizabeth King of Salem. Still he is a first cousin to my William. The reason that he is missed is possibly due to the fact that Samuel married a second woman named Elizabeth and she is a widow but Samuel King had children by both women. Their marriage is missed on most records except for the vital records of Salem MA. Mary Andrews King died in 1759 and did not have children with our King names. In 1756 Hannah King wrote a letter to the city fathers of New Salem saying that her father moved his family to New Salem. In 1756 Amos Nahum was born to them. We believe that Amos was named to honor Amos Nahum Foster his brother in law husband of Abigail King. In 1759 Sarah joined the King family followed by Jonathan in 1761. The family moved after this to Shutesbury where Stephen was born into the family. Stephen is not previously a King given name either in this lies another possibility that certainly points to the name in the wife's family. About 1781 William is then a widower living once again with the Foster family in New Salem. Abigail has died previously. Neither William or his wife's place of death or internment has been located. I am looking to find if it is possible that the missing second wife of William who might somehow be connected to the Russell family through marriage possibly about 1755. This might answer the question of the naming of James with a middle name when all his siblings did not have a middle name. All this is just grasping at intelligent straws that may bear fruit some day. Thank you for listening to this query. I have tried to cover all the angles that one might ask in this situation. Daniel

The Gazette in its notice of his death says: "It is sufficient to say, as was said by his pastor over his coffin, that he honored every office alone that Mr. Nims served his fellowmen and earned and received the approbation of the community in which he lived. It was as a neighbor, a friend, and a man of generous sympathy, good counsel and kindly acts, that he won the hearts of the people. He was truly the friend of the poor man. To the appeal of the needy his heart and his hand ever readily opened without regard to the security offer! ed. There are many yet who remember, and whose eyes soften as they remember, the kind words and the substantial aid which in their hour of need they received from Lucius Nims." Entered the Tremont House a common porter, and supported his mother from his wages. Having served in that and several other higher capacities come fifteen years, he became chief proprietor of that well-known resort of the travelling public. Now a member of the firm of Lamsons, Goodnow & Co., at Shelburne Falls. No man knew better the wants of the travelling community, or supplied them greater ability and promptness. The Tremont House lost a favorite landlord when Mr. Tucker resigned his station there. His successor may do well, but everybody misses Mr. Tucker. A whole-souled, benevolent man. His friends are as numerous as his acquaintances, and when they read this sketch of him, our fears are that they will exclaim, "Not half so good as he deserves!"
