Idah J. b. ca. 1857 39. Charles N. b ca. 1859 40. Etta b. bef. 1877 NOTES ON SOME OF THE BROWNS LISTED ABOVE: 1. Isaac Brown Sr. He first shows up in Guilford, VT. The house where he lived is still standing, and the farm was in the family for 220 years. It was just sold a few years ago because of family tragedy. (It eventually passed through marriage to the Coombs family- Mary Brown married a COOMBS- so it was recently known as the Coombs farm). In spite of much searching, we have not been able to figure out from where Isaac came. I think he lived 1736-1803. Elizabeth (last name not known- if you research MA records, Elizabeth MILLETT has been ruled out)- died in 1813 and left a will with all of her living children listed. We do know that Isaac suddenly showed up in 1777 in Guilford and bought land with Continental Dollars. Usually it was only Rev. War vets who had this money. A thorough search of all MA Rev. War vets has turned up nothing for us. He might have served in another state, or sold land to vets elsewhere and acquired the money that way. He is our big mystery. (I tracked down the Isaac Brown of Ashby, MA- not our Isaac). There is some talk that our Isaac came from Dover, VT, now part of Wardsboro. I was unable to locate him in the Wardsboro records, nor in any of the cemeteries there. There is more work to be done. There is also a possibility that he came from Rhode Island, because his neighbor, Philip Franklin, came from there. The Browns and Franklins were very close (their houses are right across the road from each other) and so there could be a previous connection. He could also be the Isaac Brown listed in the 1771 census in Deerfield, MA. The Isaac Brown from Hopkinton, MA has been ruled out. 5. Samuel "Catta" Brown. He leased a sawmill from Nathan MILLET in Guilford, VT in 1800 for 11 years. He showed up in Colrain, MA in 1810 on Catamount Hill. We have recently identified the site of his sawmill on Catamount Hill. He was living in Whitingham, VT in 1850, as a pauper. He was a Methodist. Note: any descendants of this Samuel Brown are by birth members of the Catamount Hill Association- a group which has been meeting every five years since 1875 to celebrate the heritage of those who lived on Catamount Hill. For more info, please contact: Sarah JOHNSON, President, Catamount Hill Association P.O. Box 68, Colrain, MA 01340 ([email protected]). Our next meeting will be in 2005, but we have annual hikes on the hill every summer. All who are able are welcome. (No $ solicited). A part of a poem in the Catamount Hill Association records says: "From there across the meadow I then went on To where Catta Brown lived; his wife had been gone And Martha had stayed to make herself useful Giving Lonny and Abram of milk each a cupful I found Abram away, he was lame to his sorrow and had gone to Uncle Peter's (Shippee- author's uncle) his crutches to borrow" there is also the reference to the hen: "Abram's father said tell Susy to pick it and cook it for dinner" I think these words were written by Fanny Bowen Shippee. 15. John Brown (Sarah Johnson's gggrandfather). John Brown was poor his whole life. He grew up on Catamount Hill (Colrain, MA) and then removed to Whitingham, VT for awhile in the 1840s. He was in debt and when he went to New York State, his creditors sent someone after him. They returned saying that he was destitute and had nothing of value to confiscate. (1845). He removed to Spragueville, New York shortly after to join his Aunt Lydia SHIPPEE. The house he built is still standing- the gentle woman who lives there still has to use the outhouse and hand pumps her water. The barn he built was still standing straight, but was blown down in a violent storm recently. When John Brown died, he left one dollar to each of his children. REGARDING THE FRANKLINS: Philip FRANKLIN came to Guilford, VT in 1777 with his family from Scituate, RI. They lived across the road from Isaac Brown and his family. Philip's daughter Rachel married an unrelated Brown in Colrain, and lived to be a very old woman. This causes some confusion when trying to trace Rachel JONES BROWN, w. to Samuel BROWN. It is believed that Rachel Jones Brown d. young- before 1815, since he remarried in 1815. I did not find any record of Isaac Brown in Rhode Island yet. Christchurch Cemetery has the following Browns buried there: (it is an Episcopal church) in lot #27: Agusta Brown 1824-1875 Delinda Keep Brown 1791-1877 George R. Brown 1829-1847 Isaac Brown 1793-1870 Isaac Emerson Brown 1821-1833 in lot #48: (right next to lot #27) Alfred S. Brown 1831-1893 Isaac Brown d. 1831 (probably an infant) Isaac Brown 1762-1834 Mary Brown 1764-1837 Mary Miller Brown d. 1908 Abbie Aurissa Brown 1865-1867 Clara Augusta Brown 1862-1865 Mary Coombs __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Thank you for the pictures. Perhaps some on the list will be able to identify the houses? BTW, the Sheldon house, is John Sheldon's 1658 to 1734? Thanks, Susan Roberts ----- Original Message ----- From: Rusty Clark To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 9:01 AM Subject: [MAFRANKL] Deerfield Houses Greetings, Picked the wrong weekend to photograph the Albany Road Burying Ground - there were sixteen teams in town for games, games, and more games, so there was no parking available at the cemetery. The kindly officer let us park for a moment for a couple photos, but no time to really look for some names I'm seeking for folks on the mailing list. So, instead, we drove up and down The Mile and took some photos of the houses - many of which are private homes. I don't know the names of all the homes but I've posted them where I do. So take a little drive - and remember I took most of these from a moving car - they are just glimpses of the past. http://community.webshots.com/album/201672751mesmlx We also stumbled across a Samuel Allen memorial marker down a side road. It mentions the Bars Fight in 1746, not far from the stone. We wound up at Laurel Hill Cemetery - thanks to a tip from Cyndy - and directions from a helpful bookstore clerk. If you are interested in any particular burials there, email me - I might have it. Among the names we shot: Hawks, Dickinson, Sheldon, Starr (all buried in Illinois), and some Arms. We also visited Mill River Cemetery at Lee Road and Stillwater and found some Hawks, Grout, Clapp and Williams. BTW: Historic Deerfield has a new map to the Albany Road Cemetery - with each grave numbered and a corresponding list of names. It was under $2! Also - on October 31st they are having a Hands On History - Supernatural Sunday - and one of the events which may interest you is a gravestone carving demonstration by the amazing Karin Sprague of RI - from noon to 4pm in the Harry Brown Barn. http://www.karinsprague.com/carvers.htm Have a great autumn! ~Rusty West Springfield Massachusetts - Stories Carved In Stone: http://www.dogpondpress.net/stone.html Old Bones Tombstone Gallery: http://www.oldbones.net/cpg/index.php?cat=10014 ==== MAFRANKL Mailing List ==== Shelburne Town Hall records... http://merrill.olm.net/shs/index.html "Death Records from Shelburne, Massachusetts" (abt. 1740 to date) http://merrill.olm.net/shs/vitalrecs/death.htm

Greetings! I've photographed the Hawks Cemetery on Route 2 a couple times this year and am having the devil of a time trying to decipher some of the schist stones. Both days the sun was behind the stones and they are difficult to read. Would anyone know if there was a SHIFF family there? Possibly Sandar? d 1815 and a Sally d. 1819? These aren't my kin - I'm just trying to get a list together for this interesting little cemetery located in a recreational pull off on the Mohawk Trail. There are a number of Hawks - also Comstock, Flagg, Johnson, Phipps, Sawyer and Turner - but less than fifty stones all together, I'd guess. A number of the stones mark veterans. I left a sentence out from Hon. Benjamin Carpenter's memorial stone. He was born 1726, not 1761, should read: "born in Rehoboth, Mass. A.D. 1726. A magistrate in R. Island in A.D. 1761. A public teacher..." Sorry for the confusion, confused myself also, Maura Amrich, Tyngsborough, MA [email protected]
GUILFORD, VT, Blanchard a.k.a Old North Cemetery: (Showing on my map as Old North Cemetery, going north out of Guilford Center toward Guilford on Guilford Ctr Rd., just after Weatherhead Hollow Road which is on your right, before Tater Ln on left. This is hard to find because there's just a pull over area after Weatherhead, there is a small sign across the street saying Blanchard Cemetery, and you have to get out and walk up the hill, not sure why it is called Blanchard because we don't recall seeing Blanchards, if they're in there, there aren't many. There are some fallen/sunken, buried graves. Some of these are really hard to read, info in parenthesis underneath was just to help determine I had read the info right, and help with who they are, can't vouch for these records as they are from others posted trees.) ALDREG: Mr. Peter 2/11/1803 49y 3m (This grave was hard to read because it almost looked like the name was carved over another. Post showed Peter Aldrich b. 11/11/1754 Uxbridge, MA d. 2/11/1803 Guilford, s. of Peter Aldrich and Esther COMSTOCK) ASHCROFT: Gilbert, s. of Mr. Uriah and Mrs. Lucinda Ashcroft 3/20/1828 3y 3m 21d (LDS: b. 11/29/1799 Guilford, no other info) BALCH: Patience 2/4/1798 80y w. of Josiah Balch (This is supposed to be Patience CHAMBERLAIN b. 12/28/1720 Oxford, MA to Joseph Chamberlain and Patience, unless Josiah married another Patience, Josiah is shown b. 1711, so a birth of 1718 figured from age and date of her death would work for wife for him, but everyone is showing she died bef. 1755, unless it should be 1748 at age 30?) BIXBY: Mrs. Betsey w. of Mr. Manassah Bixby 11/14/1808 44y (Confusion on this, Manassah shows b. 1745 to Samuel Bixby and Mary Buck married Elizabeth Dunsmore, she b. around same time. Manassah, son of Manassah shown b. 1765 to have married Elisabeth Dinsmore.) BOWEN: Hiram s. of Asa and Mehitable Bowen 9/8/1798 (No info on Hiram, Asa Bowen b. abt 1776 Woodstock, parents unknown married Mehitable BOYDEN, dau. of Dan'l Boyden and Rebecca BARBER.) His parents are William Nichols 1695, s. of James Nichols and Mary POOLE and Abigail KENDALL dau. of Samuel Kendall and Mary LOCKE.) PACKER: Willard Drowned in the act of bathing in the Seicton(??) River Rockingham 6/18/1842 28y 6m (Maybe the one b. abt 1812 Guilford to John Packard and Sarah WILDER. No death date is shown for him. Cemetery Visits, Colrain MA and Guilford, VT, Oct. 10, 2004 I was looking for a particular grave, this being a family foliage ride primarily, but got a few misc. records with no rhyme or reason-while I wrote ones I wanted, my husband snapped pics while my daughter shot videos, when I was done, they were done. These are by no means a full representation of what's there. For those new to Franklin Co genealogy, and not familiar with this area, Guilford, VT is just over the border from Colrain, Leyden, Bernardston and surrounding towns. Many of the same last names are found in Franklin Co and Guilford, and go back to Rehoboth and Swansea and Plymouth. Many families seemed to move back and forth between the two, I have found this with several of my lines. My mother was told there was a much loved pastor there and that's why so many married there, and also that there were some very large farms that related Franklin Co. families would help to work. ***Main names I was looking for: Brooks, Carpenter, Jones, Mowry, Newcomb, Potter, so for those researching these names, if they aren't on this list, they aren't in these cemeteries (unless there and unreadable). Many graves were hard to read, so I attempted to verify these with other records/trees, and have shown the info in parenthesis below, I cannot vouch for these records, but most made some sense due to other names found, some info was for my own records to tie in to my tree. ....................................... Small cemetery right on side of road not on my map, located around Colrain on way to Guilford, I didn't realize my husband snapped a single picture of the monument next to him from car, I found nothing of interest to me, and so don't have name of cemetery: HALL, Joel 1747-1843; BUSH, Elizabeth 1752-1830; HALL, Loton 1783-1854; NICHOLS, Rhoda 1786-1860 ...................................... The age at death for son John D. could be months or days and not years, they married in 1835 but the next child I show b. to them is Sarah in 1840, that's a large gap, but she died a few weeks after giving birth to son Christopher in 1846 so she may have had problems with pregnancies, so maybe she had a series of miscarriages between John and Sarah.) ....................................... Jabez b. 1720 if correct is considerably older than Rachal, but she is a 2nd wife, 1st wife is Johanna SHORT, his parents are believed to be Jabez Wood 1691 and Hannah NELSON. Although Rachel's age is off by 2 years if I read the grave right, she is supposed to be Rachel Bullock who was b. 6/23/1742 to Samuel Bullock 1703 and Hannah BOSWORTH 1706. Samuel's parents are Ebenezer Bullock and Sarah Moulton. Hannah's parents are John Bosworth 1671 and Elizabeth Toogood. Some misc. records,. This actually from July 3rd, 2004 trip: CARPENTER (Leaving Centre/Cemetery Bernardston out to main road, diagonally across from Streeter's store) "1829 Carpenter Homestead", Hartwell St.? The home is not open to the public, but through very good luck and connections my mom and I were given a tour, it is very much the way it was when they lived there. It was originally owned by Elijah and Felonia Carpenter. scribbling madly, we learned; The bench in the hall along with 2 others in the house was made by Richard PHELPS constructed from hewn logs taken from Deacon Ebenezer SHELDON Fort, one of four forts built in the area in 1740 for protection from Indians. A small book (shown us by homeowner) was left in house with note about it: "In one of the drawers in the "Carpenter Cupboard" are found the following notes written by Cyrus W. Carpenter and Rev. C.C. Carpenter (sons of Elijah) on their visits to the old home." Book is entitled "Hiram Golf's Religion"/"The Shoemaker by the Grace of God", George H. Hepworth, 1907, E. P. Dutton Co., NY "Charles C. Carpenter born here in this room" 7/9/1836 "written" 11/1/1909 "died 1918. Here once more" 11/5/1910 "There is also a book which Rev. C.C. Carpenter gave to the house bearing this inscription" "I wish this book (by) Hiram Golf (remain) in the "Doctor Carpenter Home" in Bernardston permanently as a little memorial of Cyrus W. Carpenter who was born there and who died in NJ 1902. He was helped by this book as seen on the opposite page (an inscription) and I am sure it will be interesting and helpful to successive tenants in the dear old home of our boyhood." "Charles C. Carpenter, Andover, Christmas, 1909" The NELSON'S owned the very old house next door (across the side street as the home is on a corner), next to that is home of STREETER'S who owned the store across from it, still called STREETER'S and still run by them, although the family patriarch had recently passed away. Charles was a doctor and a surgeon, an apothecary unit with small drawers and shelves is in a corner closet, in what used to be the office. A sink used to be in this room, but a window in the wall of the closet, behind the drawers allowed things to be passed from the other room, believed used to pass things for surgery, maybe because the cooking hearth was in there and sterilized items could be sent in from there, or that room was the waiting room, and the doctor could look out to see who was in there, maybe both. An article on the house written by Charles under the name of Mr. Martin, appeared in The Congregationalist, Conversation Corner, Sept. 1896 p. 155. In it he mentions about returning to town and visiting the now empty home, getting the key to go in, looking in the licorice drawer in his father's office, and these memories: Mother's mince pies stored in cellar; book read as child "The Boy Who Stole Apples", took pages out of it and put them on the wall, there were some remnants of these then; sweet well water from the oaken bucket; digging under a rock and expecting to find a "Chinaman" they dug so far; "Make the most of these childhood days, be happy yourself and make others happy around you." ............................................................................ ...... Last time I offered up the first half of these, and sent by attachment to anyone interested, Sue said I could copy and paste to put on whole list as it is relevant to all (in theory, or with hopes). These are the second half of the cemeteries done by mother and I, it is not all inclusive, we focused mainly on those that were on our tree, or at least sounded familiar. I will be sending this in several parts so as not to overwhelm. If there is a star before the item that means it is on my tree, and I can probably provide more info on the line. The notes made after are for my mother to identify to tree, but may help others, or just ignore if it confuses you. Again, I remind everyone these graves can be very hard to read, so corrections are always welcome. Please send corrections/questions directly to me, not list, so we don't have several people correcting the same thing on the list, and I'll give an update on corrections to the list.
