    3. Hi I found the marriage record, Elhanan widr., a 43y., farmer, s. Charles and Liberty, and Priscilla Flynn, wid., a 39 y., d. Ezekiel and Betsey A. Wentworth, Aug. 1, 1847. Do you have any idea who Liberty was? Also, he was of the shaker religion, have you looked into that? Sorry if I am driving you nuts, but I have been a genealogist for 40 years, and believe that you can never leave a leaf unturned. Assumptions just don't catch my interest. Thank you for giving the details. 3. I know that my Elhanan Winthrop Winchester was born Nov. 10, 1803 according to his gravestone in a Lowell Cemetery. He died Jan. 1, 1879. He was "married" to Lucy Whittum, and they lived in Lancaster, NH and had 5 children. A marriage record for them has not been found. Many Lancaster records were destroyed by fire. He left Lancaster in about 1847 and married Priscilla Wentworth Flynn in Chelmsford as you mentioned. That marriage record is where the information about Charles comes from. By process of elimination I have narrowed the possibilities down to the Charles who was born in Brookline. Various records indicate that Elhanan was born in New Hampshire or Vermont. His death record with information supplied by a child by his second marriage who may not have been too knowledgeable indicates that he was born in Springfield, Vt. I have checked the vital records of Springfield and all surrounding towns and have found nothing. The only Charles Winchester living during that time frame who went to Vermont is Charles of Brookline. The migratory path takes him from Franklin Co., Mass. to Bennington, Vt. That is about all I know. Seems to me that my questions are very relevant. 1. [MAFRANKL] The murder of Calvin Carter
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Carter, White Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/4EB.2ACE/1052 Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Calvin Carter, born about 1833 in Hardwick, Massachusetts to Silas J. Carter and Ruth Carter. I have in a collection of family papers, a wanted poster dating from 1873 or so that states: “Stop the murderer!” and lists a Lyman White as being the accused in this crime. Lyman White is also listed in the 1870 Federal Census as being fifty years old, occupation listed a farmer living in Shutesbury. Calvin Carter was my great-great grandfather; he lived in Petersham, Massachusetts. The 1870 Federal Census listed his occupation as a farmer. The Massachusetts Vital Records (1841-1910) records a death in Shutesbury, MA, on May 14, 1871 of a Calvin Carter, age 38, cause of death is listed as a gun shot wound. My interest lies in obtaining any information regarding this case, especially if this “Lyman White” was ever brought to justice for this crime. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    3. You will note in my original post, but I am speculating that this Charles was the father of my ancestor Elhanan and am attempting to link these two generations not the ones that came before. If I could identify all of the wives of this Charles and his children I might have the answer to the puzzle. You will note that my question did not pertain to Charles' lineage but rather pertained to whether or note it is this Charles who was first married to Lucy Upton and then to Irene Rice!! Hello everyone, My brick wall is Charles Winchester who lived variously in Rowe and I believe Charlemont although I have read that he owned lands in Warwick until about 1814 after which he relocated to Vermont. His intentions to marry Rene (Irena) Rice are recorded in Buckland in 1808, and they were married in 1809, but I know not where. In 1810 he is found in the Rowe census with four children indicating that either he or his wife had children at home by a previous marriage. He died in 1824 in Bennington Vt. after having applied for a Revolutionary War pension. This is the Charles Winchester born in Brookline Mass in 1749. I believe that it is this Charles who was the father of my ancestor Elhanan Winchester by an earlier marriage. I have read various sources which indicate a marriage between Charles Winchester and Lucy Upton bpt. Mar. 13,1763 who reportedly died in Rome, Oeinda County, New York per the Descendants of John Upton of North Reading, Mass. by John Adams Vinton. If this is the same Charles, when did she leave him, and were there any children? Any help in determining who his earlier wife was would be greatly appreciated. Just thought I'd keep you updated on the latest NIMS NEWS announcements! The Nims Family Association Members newsletter, August 2006 announced the association's events scheduled for the 2006 NIMS FAMILY REUNION September 29 - 30, 2006. The events start on Friday Sept. 29th with social time starting at 5:30pm, complete with a speaker and the movie "Captive" which was filmed in Deerfield. Saturday, Sept. 30th starts at White Church at 9:30, a slide show about the route the captives took after the raid. There will be presentations on Godfrey's grandson, David, along with the progress on the cataloging of the Nims files; there is also a discussion on the Canadian descendants of Abigail Nims. Clothing of the Hudson Bay company will also be worn by two of her descendants. A humorous talk will be given about taverns; walking tours, as well as lunch available for $6.00 at White Church. Having attended several NFA Reunions in the past, it sounds like a lot of preparation has been done so all will have an experience to talk about when they return home! Stories about current descendants should be shared also!! Kudos to the Reunion event planners and to their enthusiastic President! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4EB.2ACE/1049.1.1.1 Message Board Post: As a follow up to my initial posting as well as Carole's, I'd like to add the following comments. Carole is correct in using the ACTUAL/ORIGINAL palce name on any genealogical chart where the specific vital event actually occurred. That is the correct way to record the information, EVEN IF the place became known by a different name later on. For instance, if one were born in a part of Deefield that later on became part of Greenfield, the place of birth should be noted as Deerfield. An explanatory note can or should be added to indicate that that area of Deerfield (e.g. the Cheapside section) later became annexed by Greenfield (as happened with the Cheapside section in 1896). It is also true that if one were born in Deerfield prior to Greenfield becoming incorporated as a town in 1753, the palce should be noted as Deerfield if the person was born in the area of Deerfield that later became Greenfield. To be clear, the place name recorded should indicate the ACTUAL place where the vital event occured at he time it occurred, not what it became known as at a later date. I hope this helps to clarify this issue without adding to an already confusing situation. I urge anyone doing Massachusetts genealogy to seek out the Secretary of State's publication having to do with the History of Counties, Cities and Towns of Massachusetts. I do not know the last time it was published. Perhaps it is still available through the Sec of State's office or perhaps it can be obtained through interlibrary loan. It really is a necessity and will provide all the necessary information on this topic. NOTE: Prior to posting this I did an internet search and found this booklet. Here is the citation (Galvin is the current Sec Of State): Historical Data Relating to Counties, Cities and Towns in Massachusetts, 5th Edition. Author: William Francis Galvin Published: 1997. It can be puirchased through Pciton Press for $9.00. It's worth it's weight in gold. http://www.pictonpress.com/store/show/1821 This is the Hist Gen publication.. I have also inquired of the Sec of State's office to see if they stil make it available. Stay tuned.
