Where I have lived for the past 5 years there are no research libraries, for the first 20 years of my research "addiction" I used to spend a great deal of time in them, including annual treks over to SLC. So now I have to use the internet and ask for help. Not as much fun, but it is either that or sitting here crocheting afghans or watching a lot of senseless TV?? (Perish the thought of doing either). I will print out the info you sent and figure out which Knowlton family this refers to since they did recycle names each generation/family and I have 3 Generations of Timothy Knowltons as ancestors. (Sort of stuck in a rut ). Thanks for that information and the time taken. Maybe I can find some deeds/indentures/mortgages.

Rowe was not done in the original series, so I'm not sure if they are going to put it up, although they are available: 1. Massachusetts vital records to 1850. In History and proceedings of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association; Deerfield, Mass.: The Association, 1890-1929, Vol. 7 (1922), on page 93 begins "An Historical Sketch of Rowe." There is a discussion on the various spellings of the Myrifield Plantation, and mentions the fact that a place called "Murryfield" became Chester, Mass. in the 1760s. In 1770, Myrifield (later Rowe) had 8 families, and the Knowltons are not mentioned. Seven families came from Worcester County, and one from Boston. By 1775, there were 28 families, although the new additions are not named. No Knowlton (any spelling) is cited on the early documents given. I also found in the tax rolls of 1798, as of Oct. 1st, in the township of Rowe: Timothy Knowlton Junior, one dwelling house, and 45 acres. Benjamin Knowlton, 10 acres Timothy Knowlton, one dwelling house, and 60 acres. The Latter Day Saints (Mormons) have on microfilm, Rowe births, marriages, marriage intentions, and deaths 1774 - 1848. Microfilm order number is 0902998, available for rent at your closest Family History Center. Good luck in your research! Shari Strahan

I've tried googling it but I can not seem to find any information on it. I believe it was called the Conway Pool although it resembled a lake more than a pool. I remember swimming there when I was a child and we use to go to Conway for 2 weeks every year during the summer for vacation. If anyone could help me out here I would appreciate it. I have a lot of relatives still living in Mass. and was hoping to plan a family reunion. I was going to look into the possiblity of holding it in the Conway area as I would love to go back there to see how things have changed over the past 30 or so years. Thank you for your time. Patty

RE: VRs. I'm not sure if the Ashfield VRs were one of the set of Massachusetts VRS that were puiblished or not, I just don't recall. If they were, they would have covered from Ashfield's inception to 1850 or thereabouts. So, that's the first thing to check out. RE: Newspaper account. The de facto county newspaper has always been, since 1792, the paper published in Greenfield which has gone by various names for over 200 years. Local VRs were listed in the paper so 1841 vital events would have definitely been listed. Whether parent's names were include is hit or miss. It would pay to check out any possible newspaper account, if for nothing else than to know it was a source that was considered. RE: County Records. Probate and land records, which mght yield some informaiton are held at the county level, in this case at the Franklin County Courthouse in Greenfield. Again. something worth checking. RE: Ashfield Records. The Ashfield Historical Society is very active and they have various family records. Probably worth a letter to them to see what, if anything, they may have. I hope this is helpful. Good Luck, Garry

    1. [MAFRANKL] Carter murder
    2. I sent the request for information to the Greenfield Recorder newspaper and it was published in the "Neighbors" column. A local history buff responded with copies of several newspaper articles from the time. I'd be glad to mail them to the gggrandchild if you send your address. The microfilm copies are difficult to read. What a wonderful skeleton to have in the closet. I will transcribe here, if you will pardon its length: May 16, 1871 Springfield Daily Republican Joseph White of Shutesbury shot Calvin Carter at the house of Reuben Brown at 9 o'clock Sunday evening causing his death in 15(?) minutes. White has not yet been taken , though two sheriffs are after him. May 17 1871 Springfield Republican The particulars of the fatal shooting affair at Shutesbury Saturday night are furnished by a correspondent. White and Carter, while the former was intoxicated, got into a dispute. White left xxand then returned and challenged Carter (sorry, too hard to read) May 18, 1871 Springfield Republican New England News Items Western Massachusetts More about the Shutesbury Murder The shooting of Calvin Carter by Lyman White at Shutesbury, Sunday night, was simply a cold blooded murder. A grudge has existed between them a long time, and on Sunday they were together at the house of Reuben Bacon, where they apparently made up the old score and shook hands over it. This was in the evening, and White afterward left the house. In about half an hour he came back, called out Carter and told him he was going to shoot him. Carter said, "You won't shoot any man--you daren't shoot me." White damned him, and as he came within six feet raised his gun to his shoulder. Carter sprang toward him to turn away the gun, but received the whole charge through the body. Carter lived only a few minutes after being shot. He was 33 years old and leaves a wife and seven children, of whom four are quite young. White immediately escapted, and has not yet been arrested. He called at a house in Shutesbury village for some tobacco about an hour after the murder, and took dinner at Grout's Corner {Millers Falls} Monday noon. The town of Shutesbury offers a reward for his capture, and several constables are watching places where he is supposed to be concealed. White is about fifty years old, and cousin to Carter. His wife deserted him about twenty years ago on account of his ugly disposition, and since that time he has lived alone, spending most of his time in hunting and fishing. White was undoubtedly drunk at the time he fired the fatal shot, but when told that Carter was dead, declared with an oath that he intended to kill him. and was glad that he succeeded. May 19.1871 Springfield Republican Lyman White, the Shutesbury murderer, has been arrested and is the Greenfield Jail. It would be interesting to find out what records remain in the Greenfield Court!
