See notes below. I find Lexington (KY) Public Library's inability to receive and catalog CD Family History book donations disappointing to say the least! Of all the many college and public libraries I have donated to around KY and surrounding states, this is a FIRST! They want to give my book back to me! Unacceptable. Mr. Rader, Thanks for your note. May I suggest that you contact EKU, UK and other public county libraries that currently catalogue CD books that I have donated my book to for a suitable interim solution? Could you not type up an index and make it available in the Genealogy area and store the discs in the back, until the new system comes on line? My book is over 1,000 pages in length with 600 pictures--there are MANY Park and Cobb Family members in the Lexington area who would find this resource invaluable. Please don't send it back to me!! I would be very disappointed in the lost opportunity for hundreds that its return would represent. I pray that you find a suitable interim measure to inform your patrons that you have this book and make it available to them. Digitized books are coming of age nationwide and are integral in keeping costs down, including those associated with storage space requirements compared to the hardcopy versions. Please don't give up. Sincerely, William D. Park Hurricane, WV -----Original Message----- From: Rader, Robin [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, June 21, 2004 2:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Park Family of Kentucky History on CD Dear Mr. Park: Last month we received the Park Family of Kentucky History CD. Thank you for thinking of us and forwarding us a copy. I am very much aware of the work that goes into compiling family history, not to mention distributing it and keeping costs down. Lexington Public Library is currently evaluating how best to catalog CD-rom and make it available to the public. In the past our various computers were more or less locked down, prohibiting us from easily loading and making available the many CDs we received. I am not sure when or even if we will be able to make family histories available in this format. The decision will probably be made over the coming months or even the coming year as we implement an entirely new computer system. In light of this, if you would like me to return the CD, I would be happy to do so. Another option is for me to simply keep it uncataloged in my office until a decision is reached. Please let me know how you would like us to proceed. Again, thank you for thinking of us.
