Dear Anne, I cannot help you with any Burton families who were in Tennessee. I do little Tennessee research--it was a pass-through state for many of my ancestors--either going to Kentucky or leaving Kentucky for sunnier climes--like Texas--in the 1830s and 1840s!!! However, I have collected some notes, mostly with citations [required of all researchers these days to answer question--Where did you get that info?] on David Burton and a few others, and I am sharing with you and other county lists. I am afraid Burton is a common name, as I found out when I googled.com for *burton family*. Please use the citations--and dates--if you use this material with your own material. Information without dates is practically useless, and, of course, places are important too, although places change all the time because of county boundary changes, and in some cases, names of the counties change!!! Ah, me--keeps us hopping from place to place. Of course, you know that many North Carolinians were granted land in Tennessee, and so a search of North Carolina land grants may be in order. I see my notes are somewhat jumbled--you may want to make a time line. This David Burton MAY not be related to your David Burton, but you may have to collect them all for a time in order to sort them out. I find deeds and tax records--and collecting neighbors--helps me sort out people. Also, watch the watercourse on which the land is located. Some genealogical experts say, parricularly in Virginia, persons married brides who lived downstream!!! E.W.Wallace not a direct descendant of Burton families direct descendant of Jesse Oldham and Elizabeth Simpson, later of Madison Co., KY Preparer: Evelyn W. Wallace 1996 edited May 2006 DAVID BURTON. (b ca 1755). He was married ca. Feb 1780 to Susannah Simpson, daughter of Richard Simpson. (In Fairfax Co., VA, this Richard Simpson is known as Richard, Jr., son of Richard Simpson, Sr., as indicated by deeds of Fairfax Co., VA.). David Burton & Susanna Simpson (dau. of Richd.) 7 Feb 1780, Tyree Harris, William Campbell, bondsman/witness. (Tyree Harris was married to sister of Susanna Simpson, Mary Ann Simpson, his second wife. According to e-mail from Louise T. Overton, Raleigh, NC 12/13/99, David Burton is believed to be son of Samuel and Susanna Burton. No further information.) (Kay Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA MARRIAGE BONDS 1778-1868) From court minutes of Sept 1782 Patrolers of St. David's [District]: John Brown, Jere Williamson, David Burton, Jeptha Rice, Charles Brooks, William Rice (son of John), Bedford Brown, Benjamin Williamson. Caswell Historical Abstracts of Minutes of Caswell Co., NC 1976 (FHL film 1036557] "Abstracts of Minutes of Caswell County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions" The marriage is verified by the following Caswell Co., NC deed: DB C-49: Richard Simpson, Sen to David Burton for natural love due to Burton who married daughter Susannah Simpson, 300 A on N fork Stony Cr of Haw R adj Tyre Harris Sen [q.v.] 22 Mar 1785. Wit: Tyre Harris Jun., Jere Williamson, Richard Simpson, Jun. [Harris and Williamson were kinsmen of the Simpsons.] Later, David Burton resold to Simpson this 300 acres, as seen below. He may have been preparing to relocate, probably to Kentucky. Caswell Co. DB C-57 and C-58 give name of Burton as a witness and as a neighbor on Haw R. C-140, wit; C-144-wit. DB F-195-196 David Burton to Richard Simpson, for 150 pds., 300 A on N fork Stoney Cr a branch of Haw R adj William Swift, formerly Tyree Harris, Richard Simpson, 27 Sep 1788. Wit: Robert Harris, DK [Duke?] Williams (Deeds from Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS BOOKS 1777-1817 [Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1989]) Robert Harris, one of the witnesses is believed to be a son of Tyree Harris, and Duke Williams was married to Edy Harris, Tyree's daughter. Speculation: A Susannah Burton appears on Caswell Co. tax list, 1786, St. David's District: 0-1-2. Had Burton removed to another jurisdiction, at least temporarily? Or could this be the reported mother of David Burton? Burton lived in the same neighborhood as the Simpsons and the Oldhams--Country Line Cr.--as late as 1797, as evidenced by Caswell Co. DB O-284, in which deed he was grantor and Richard Simpson was one of the three witnesses. The year 1783 is the first date David's name appears in Caswell Co. (formed in 1777) deed books. He was a witness to DB B-384-5, Robert Sorrell to John Williams [probably brother of Henry Williams] for land on Stoney Cr adj R. Atkinson, George Oldham, Jeremiah Williamson (q.v.), Nathaniel Reed. Another Burton who lived in that vicinity ca. 1784 was John Burton. The family may have had members in Halifax Co., VA, across the state line from Caswell Co. Halifax Co., VA was formed 1752 from Lunenburg Co. No Burtons appear on the 1777 tax list of Caswell Co. Caswell Co., NC Deed Bk B-388: Henry Burton of Halifax Co., VA, to John Burton of Caswell Co for 60 pds, 200 A on Dobbins Br of Country Line Cr. adj Thomas Rainey, John Low, Hugh McAden. 19 Jul 1784. Wit: John McAden, Wm. McAden. Marriage records of Madison Co., KY indicate that David Burton probably migrated there with his brother-in-law, Jesse Oldham, and other sons-in-law of Richard Simpson II (aka Jr.). Dates of marriages of some of his children appear in Madison Co. Some of the Burton children apparently married their Oldham cousins, as indicated by the will of Jesse Oldham, Sr, Madison Co., 1814: 1803 - China Burton to John Moore; David Burton, fa of bride; Zene [Zere?] Burton, bondsman. 1804 - Mary Burton to Elias Oldham; David Burton, fa of bride; William Oldham, bondsman. 1814 - Kitty Burton to John Robinson; David Burton, fa of bride; David Burton, bondsman. David Burton was bondsman for this marriage in 1789: Nancy White to Jacob Williams. (Fragmentary record) ........ Other Burtons in Madison Co., KY, relationship unknown: Aug ct 1787: A deed of gift of Negroe Name Jacob from Robert Burton to Allen Burton was the Oath of John Phelps Jr. & Abraham Burton. .......... Burtons on tax list [year unknown?] Caswell Co., St. David's Dist Burton, David 300 Stony 1-0 Burton, Samuel 300 Stony 1-0 Burton, Cuthbert 180 Stony 1-0 ......... From Minutes of the Inferior Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Orange Co., NC, 1777, there is a linkage of Richard Simpson and one of his sons-in-law, Nathaniel Hart to a Robert Burton, deceased. Possibly this Robert Burton was related to David Burton, although Burton seems to be a common name in North Carolina at this time. Robert Burton of Granville Co., NC married Agatha Williams, daughter (probably adopted daughter) of Judge John Williams of Granville Co., NC. Many of Robert Burton's papers are held in North Carolina repositories--Duke University and North Carolina State Archives. The Robert Burton who was deceased prior to May 1777 is unknown to this writer. "Court of 4th Tuesday in May 1777: Ordered James Landon, Wm. Moore, David Hart, Nath'l Hart & Richard Simpson or majority, make equal distribution of personal property of Estate of Robert Burton, among the widow and children...the Shff. with the Surveyor of County to lay off & assign the widow's thirds." (Alma Cheek Redden, ABSTRACTS OF THE MINUTES OF THE INFERIOR COURT OF PLEAS AND QUARTER SESSIONS OF ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. 1777-1788 [Hillsborough, NC: 1966]) A later entry shows that Charles Burton was administrator of the estate of Robert Burton. This is not the same Robert Burton of Granville Co., NC who later married Agatha Williams, daughter of John Williams, Esq. of Granville Co., NC.
