Received this email from on Freeman Chalmers. Can anyone answer this question? I will see that this gentleman receives answers I found my great grand father in the 1860 Madison County, Kentucky slave schedule along with his twin brother. I know that from talking to older members of my family that he was mulatto, and in fact he is listed on the slave schedule as such. What I noticed though, was that those who where listed as mulatto had a two-digit number written next to their color in the “Fugitive from the State” column. My great grand father was only 4 when the slave schedule was taken. The other mulatto children listed with him are all under the age of 10, so I am thinking that this number has nothing to do with being a fugitive from the state, they would have been to young to run away. Those listed as black have no numbers in this column. I hoping someone might know what these numbers mean. If you would like to see these slave schedule pages or knows someone who can answer this question please email me at [email protected] and I will email them to you. Thank you, Freeman Chambers
