At the end of this message, I will post the URL where I located this abstracted deed, Louisa Co., VA, mentioning Shirwood Harris. (He is not in my ancestry, as far as can be determined. I do find from time to time a person of this same name in Granville Co., NC and later in a document or two in Madison Co., KY. I am wondering whether these are different men with the same name, appearing in different places at different times. That will be for his descendants to figure out--or someone who loves solving genealogical puzzles.) Note there is a David Harris also. Submitted by E.W.Wallace Book: A, Page: 283, Grantor: Shirwood Harris, Grantee: Nelson Anderson, Date: 05-Feb-1746 Shirwood Harris of St. Paul's Par. Hanover Co. to Nelson Anderson of St. Paul's Par. Adam's corner, Joseph East's line, David Harris' line, Sherwood Harris corner, Timberlake's line. Here is the URL for abstracted deeds [not all are included as one can tell by the number of the deed books] of Louisa Co., VA. It had been formed from Hanover Co. ca 1742, and a good many residents of Hanover Co. are mentioned in these deeds. There is an index, thank goodness, of surnames with given names included. Not every name, but in groups of surnames. You can figure it, I know. TWO QUESTIONS: 1. Who were the parents of JOSEPH HAWKINS whose Will was proved in Madison County on August 1, 1803? 2. In his Will, Joseph Hawkins left land in Green County on Pitmon's Creek, to his daughters: Sarah (Hawkins) Pitts, Martha/Patsy (Hawkins) Boucher/Butcher, and Susannah (Hawkins) Campbell (married William Campbell). All three daughters moved to Warren County, TN, shortly after Joseph Hawkins's death. Did they sell their land in Green County, KY??? If so, to whom? Their land joined that of their brother, John Hawkins. Ann B. Chambless

The story: Mildred Oldham married and had two children, which she had to give up. The facts: Mildred Oldham, age 14, married Nathan Williams, age 20 in March, 1853 in Madison County, KY. She was the daughter of Jane Hill and Ed Oldham. Her parents probably died as her guardian Joel Karr gave consent for the above marriage. In December 1860 she married Thomas E. Gooch. I do not have the divorce case, but in 1860 Mildred Williams is living in the Joel Karr house. She is a seamstress and does not have any children living with her. Mildred inherited her share of her mother's (Jane Hill Oldham) part of her grandmother's estate--Eliza White Gooch Hill. (Will of Eliza Hill, 1859) Part of this "share" was a slave named Jack, whom she and her second husband Thomas Gooch sold in 1863. Did Mildred Oldham Williams have some children by Nathan Williams? I would appreciate any information you might have on this puzzle. If anyone lives in Frankfort and can go to the Archives and get the divorce case, I would be glad to pay for your time. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
My husband Edmund Powell Karr Jr. is Joel's second great-grandson. Mildred was Elizabeth Oldham's niece and second cousin once removed. Nathan Williams is the nephew of Joel and Elizabeth Oldham Karr for his mother Celia Oldham Williams is Elizabeth Oldham Karr's older sister's son. Nathan Williams' father died in 1853 of consumption in Madison County, Kentucky. I do not know if it was before or after the March marriage. A couple of years ago, I ordered a LDS microfilm, "Depositions in Land Trials of Garrard Co", and if you check the catalog, perhaps there are films specifically for Madison trials. In the very early years, the entire Bluegrass area was "lumped" together when people made their land entries before the Land Commissioners, so when surveyed were divided generally only into the three original counties - Lincoln, Jefferson, Fayette.. A good many North Carolinians came to Kentucky, especially attracted by the activities of Boonesborough. You may be interested in this information: Those of you fortunate enough to have access to the online genealogical database HeritageQuest through your local--or nearby--public library may be interested to know that this book (which is now outdated but still useful) appears in HeritageQuest: J Bryan Grimes Abstract of North Carolina Wills compiled from original and recorded wills in the office of the secretary of state Raleight: E. M. Uzell, 1910, 676 pgs. You will be happy to know there is an index at the end of the book. The index is alphabetized (good) and quite lengthy. You know of course there is a newer book of index of NC wills compiled by Thornton Mitchell. There are all sorts of papers and books (out of copyright) which have been digitzed. As you know, you cannot take as the truth something just because it has been printed. I learned this at my mother's knee. Didn't you? See your public librarian about a valid library card at any Public library near you who subscribes to this database. Then, most of the time, you can access this database at your home computer. (There are always exceptions, of course.) Have you checked your community college library or a nearby University library for genealogical volumes. Some are under genealogy (such as Burke's Peerage), others are under Family History, others under Immigration. Learn the call numbers for those categories. (My trouble is the parking problem.) Pat Clare asks about a Robert Harris, reported son of Christopher Harris, the elder, formerly of Albemarle Co., VA, but who died testate in Madison Co., KY. She is inquiring about a Robert Harris of Allen Co., KY. Here are my notes on Robert Harris, son of Christopher Harris and his first wife, said to be Mary Dabney, which circumstantial evidence indicates may be true. I invite comments, corrections, etc. Pat has some information about Robert's involvement in the American Revolution. Her sources differ from mine, but they both may be correct. Submitted by E. W.Wallace descendant of another of Christopher's sons, Overton Harris (d. testate 1827) ROBERT HARRIS Son of Christopher I and his 1st wife Mary Dabney. Refer to will of his father. His birthdate, 24 Aug 1749, apparently unconfirmed, is taken from DAR application 598925. Those of his siblings and most of the marriages are given, indicating the applicant MAY have used a Bible record. A Robert Harris appears in [Revolutionary War] Public Service Claims, Albemarle County Court Booklet, No. 156 [same number as Christopher Harris in same booklet]. Much of the old handwriting cannot be read by this writer. It appears "for diets furnished drivers for 6.140". He seemingly was paid 6 shillings in Continental money. (Copy of unnumbered page obtained from Virginia State Library, May 1991.) Robert Harris and his father Christopher Harris were both signers of a petition to divide the county of Lincoln [Kentucky, but then Virginia] into three counties, Lincoln, Mercer and Madison. 1786. Granted. Many of the signers of this petition were at Boonesboro, states the compiler. (The year 1786 preceded the formation of Kentucky as a State/Commonwealth in 1792.) (Katherine Phelps Caperton, "A Partial List of Those at Fort Boonesborough," in THE REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL. 23, p. 151 [renumbered, it seems, from original].) Robert Harris later resided in Madison Co., and, according to Hazel A. Spraker in THE BOONE FAMILY, his wife was Nancy Grubbs, daughter of William Grubbs and his wife Susanna Hearne. He was in the 1810 census, Madison Co., KY, not yet read as of 8/97. He is specified "Tate's Creek." He is shown in the 1820 census index of Madison Co. Apparently he and Nancy, his wife, were witnesses in court for one John Jackson. At July court 1789, John Jackson was ordered to pay Nancy Harris for two days; "same to pay Robt Harris same." (No doubt this was because they were witnesses for Jackson.) Marriages in Madison Co. of some of Robert's children; FB = father of bride; FG = father of groom. FG. Harris, Nancy & William Stone, 22 Oct 1805; Tyree Harris, bm; Robert Harris, FB Harris, Rebeccah & Samuel Hayden, 30 Jul 1813; Robert Harris, bm & FB Does this pertain to the same Robert Harris? According to Madison Co. marriage records, a Robert Harris m. Jael Ellison, 21 Apr 1812; Joseph Ellison, father of bride was bondsman and also gave consent. (Bill & Kathy Vockery MARRIAGES OF MADISON CO, KY ,Vol. I, 1786-1822 [Richmond, KY: Privately published, 1993], p. 37) There were two other marriages of a Robert Harris in 1814 and 1815, leading us to believe there may have been several Robert Harrises in Madison Co. Some may have been nephews of the older Robert Harris.. A Robert Harris, with wife Jael appears in the 1850 census of Madison Co., KY. Note that the children were born in Missouri.: Dwelling 152(?), Family 154 Robert Harris, age 63, M, Farmer, 9380, b. Virginia Jael " , age 54, b. Missouri Paulna, age 22 F, b. Berry, a Baptist preacher, "son of John Berry of Kentucky, and wife Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Robert Harris and wife Nancy Grubbs." Evidently the Berrys moved to or near Boonslick Country, MO. Other children of Robert Harris are listed in THE BOONE FAMILY under "Harris Family." A Different Robert Harris? The Robert Harris who appears in the 1850 census is a younger man that the reported son of Christopher Harris who was born ca. 1749. The Robert Harris in the following census was born ca. 1787 in Virginia and was married in Madison Co., KY. Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry. During his lifetime, James Ellison purchased and sold lands on Muddy Creek and Drowning Creek. On 8 Dec. 1835 (Deed Book W, Pg 223-224) he purchased 1150 acres. My description was brief and thus incomplete. The deed was to land in Madison Co. on the waters of Station camp creek and bounded as follows to wit .... crossing a branch of Station camp creek.... boundary of Speeds survey... south side of the red lick and corner to said Speed... another of Speeds lines.. another of said Speed's corners... crossing a branch of Drowning creek... in Smith's line.. Smith's survey... I started to copy the deed description in full but will need more time to do that so wanted to send this along with my thanks. If anyone wants the more complete version, please let me know. This seems to indicate that the land is on the waters of Station Camp Creek in Madison Co.; however, following "bounded as follows to wit" a branch of Station Camp Creek and other land features are listed, as shown above. But the Station Camp Creek itself is not referenced. If anyone has a further idea regarding the location of this land, I am interested. Thanks, Jay G.
