    1. [MADKY] A Possible Way to Get Info from the So-called 1787 Census of Virginia, A Set of 3
    2. Dear Kentucky researchers - For those who are not near a library which has the three volume set called The 1787 Census of Virginia by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love, let me suggest the research method. Keep in mind that the third volume is the index for the preceding two volumes.: On the Family History Library website (_www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) ) are some Forms. Click on that word which is on the right of the opening screen. There are several drop-down menus--look on the right of the next screen. Choose *Sort by Title* Click on the letter R - the title you are looking for will be the first on the list - Request for Photocopy [which includes books and other material] Print out that form and get out your check book. The instructions are on the form. Follow them carefully. You can request that the Library in Salt Lake City send you photocopies of the surnames in the INDEX [not on the lists, just yet] which surnames you desire. (All you will get are the copies of the index pages.) You had better not try this with a REALLY common name, or you will be sending off and receiving LOTS of copies, which may be of interest, but it will blow your monthly budget for Starbucks coffee!!! Now, you will note the page numbers on which that surname appears. Then you again print out the same form but with a different request--for the particular pages in which you are interested. Again, get out your check book. A dedicated genealogist whom I know says she frequently asks for photocopies of index pages of books in which she is interested, and then requests the actual pages. She says the library also includes, at no cost, the title page of the book. You need this title page for citing your sources--a must for real genealogists!!! But be sure to check University and college library catalogs in your neighborhood. Although many such institutions don't particularly cater to genealogists, there are some real gems in some of those University shelves. For example, I was looking for a book of court records [abstracts] of a certain North Carolina county, which book had been compiled by a genealogist. Where it was shelved? In the Law Library of a prestigious California University!!!! I am told by a librarian that frequently university and college libraries will interlibrary loan their books. So ask your public librarian whether they will request interlibrary loan. (Some will NOT, unfortunately, but it is much easier with the internet!) Also, check the catalog of your State library. Some of them have wonderful collections of genealogical works. Pass this word along to other Kentucky websites. (For the uninformed--this so-called census includes the personal property tax lists for nearly every county in Virginia, including the counties which later became Kentucky counties--and West Virginia counties.). These are personal property tax lists--not land tax lists!!! E.W.Wallace who reviews the 1787 Census of Virginia again and again but I don't own it--it is at a Library which I use **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 1. [MADKY] Another Important Source for Researcher of Early Kentucky Inhabitants
    2. Besides the early land grants in Kentucky, compiled by Jillson, in books with VERY SMALL print, I have found the transcriptions of Michael L. Cook and his wife Bettie C. Cook of Evansville, IN of Kentucky court records, etc. to be helpful in locating when and where our *missing* ancestors may have been. (Some years ago Family Tree Maker issued a CD #650 of *Land Records: Kentucky, 1774-1924* which includes several of Jillson's books plus some taxpayer lists. I do not remember the counties which had the tax lists. The ISBN for the CD 1-57944-182-3. I hope you can find it still on the market. It is very searchable.) You can find a list of these books by doing an author search on the Family HIstory Library Catalog at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Be sure to use Michael L. Cook's middle initial. If you cannot find Michael Cook's books in your favorite genealogical library, get together with your local reference librarian and see what you can work out for Interlibrary Loan -- ILL for those who know the lingo!!! I used to live in a rural community, and, even though I knew a good many books could be borrowed from a branch of my State library, the librarian tried to persuade me to use some other library. This was before the days of the internet. I think she was NOT a trained librarian, but she was in charge of ILL! (I hope you have better luck!) 3. I have just now looked at the ultimate source, "Master Index of VA Surveys and grants [in District of KY] 1774-1791", published by Ky Historical Society. Gerald, if you are listening, I DID NOT KNOW UNTIL JUST NOW that William Young had made 2 entries surveyed 1781, on NE Branch of Gilberts Creek!! This is the same area of my John Anderson's first entry. One of William Young's entries of 400 ac went to grant in 1783; the other was "caveated" (denied for interferrence with another's entry) as was my John Anderson's!! He must have purchased his land on Silver Creek, or made a later entry there as my John did, which was granted. I just love the stories that land documents tell. In any event, William Young was in old Lincoln Co in 1787 and should be on the tax list.
