Dear friends and list members: Some of you may have already received an e-mail from list-moms or listers regarding ancestry.com's decision to create a new "OneWorldTree" with the information that we all submitted, and then to charge $49.95 to access the information. If you have not received the e-mail and would like more information, you can follow this link http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ . I did, and found out that the only information available to me (even from my own tree!), was the ancestor's name that I originally entered in the "search" box. Family information was listed, but was "grayed out" with a note stating "Gray text indicates information available to subscribers only." Well, I already have a broad-based subscription to ancestry's services, but apparently THIS subscription is in addition to that one. They have a wonderful discount on this service to those of us who subscribe already...only $39.95! Lucky us. This is just another in a string of problems I have had with Ancestry's services in recent months. I now realize that all of you who dissed ancestry in the past were correct. Shame on me for not listening sooner. Also, when taking all of this into consideration, also consider the fact that many, many of us who submitted trees did so with accidental errors, or unproven facts....so we're essentially being charged for "misinformation"? I am trying to locate descendants of Joel and Adelin "Ady" Sowers who I believe settled in the Kirksville dist some time after 1965. I am showing 11 children and have located 2 in the census of Madison Co., Kirksville dist. Leroy Sowers was living with Barton and Florence Hollinsworth in 1900 and was listed as an Uncle. In the 1920 census he was listed with Wiliam Hager (I think as the writing is a bit hard to make out). He is listed as a bro-in-law. Any information on any of the family would be greatly appreciated. Hello Madison County Researchers, I would like to introduce myself to you!! My name is Jennifer Fish and I have joined Bill LaBach as co-coordinator for the Madison County KyGenWeb. I have created a site within Bill's site called Madison County KyGenWeb Genealogy Research. It can be found at this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymadiso/research/index.htm Please take a look at the site and consider contributing your information today!! I can be reached at the following email address: [email protected] Look forward to serving Madison County!!! Some counties have specific books for these bonds. Other counties I have noticed have them in the court order books. If you are lucky the books have indexes. Good luck. Kellie
According to Sandi Gorin's Kentucky research tips at http://www.rootsquest.com/~jmurphy/lessons/lessons.htm the Madison County Clerk's office has bastardy cases from 1865 on. Does anyone know how we could find more information? For example, is there a list that can be searched? Where could we write or call for a copy of a bond? The birth in which I am interested is: Mother: Cynthia BOWLIN Child: Ella Nora BOWLIN b. 10 Oct. 1884 Possible father: William HIGGINBOTHAM Thanks for any leads! Ira Harris III, a stalwart of this list, Harris-Hunters, has been listing some Missouri Marriages involving a Harris bride or a Harris groom. One of the marriages listed is that of Goodman Oldham thus: Nancy Harris to Goodman Oldham, January 19, 1841 - Chariton Co., MO For those interested in Goodman Oldham, whose roots were in Madison Co., KY, I highly recommend searching the archives of rootsweb for the Oldham rootsweb list, the posts of 2003. There is a biography of Goodman Oldham and then there is a transcript of a deed in Madison Co., KY which names a good many of his siblings. Goodman Oldham was deceased, and the deed indicates that his heirs are unknown. This is the URL http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specificy Oldham list and then check the 2003 posts. Be sure to search goodman oldham. Who are the parents of Nancy Harris? Any good leads? E.W.Wallace descendant of Goodman's sister, Nancy Oldham bride of Overton Harris and later of Anderson Chenault of Madison Co.
I was wondering if any one has a book or CD of early Ky. devorces. If there is such a thing could you give me the name and where I could find it to buy. If there is a book in the libreary such as the Vockery book of early marriages I would love to find it. Thanks Jean
The October 2003 issue of The Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter printed, with permission an article from The Library of Virginia [title], issue 159 (Sept/Oct 2003). It concerns the New On-Line Card Catalog of the Library of Virginia. This website can use up a lot of your time, but may save you hours (and long trips) of away-from-home research. The URL is rather long--and don't you dare misspell a word, as I did when I first tried to type in this longish URL (it is at the end, as rootsweb does not like or permit HTML, I am told). Because most (but not all) of my ancestors seem to have left Virginia prior to the Americn Revolution, I was most interested in the colonial land patents, particularly those of Northern Neck (the land between the Potomac and the Rappahannock). Originally all that land was designated Northumberland Co. but the counties kept multiplying--and dividing--and some of your folks must not have known in which county they should record their land records!!! As one noted genealogist of Salt Lake City has said in one of her lectures, If you are searching in Virginia, search all the counties!!! I thought she was crazy, but my research makes me understand that not only did these folks move, but the counties kept dividing, and the ancestors kept acquiring or selling land in an adjoining county!!! After accessing the URL, I printed out seven different NN patents either for Oldham males or for some of their neighbors, where the lines of Oldhams were mentioned. They [the NN patents] mentioning Oldhams seem to begin ca 1709. A good many are patents for land in Richmond Co. [not the city of Richmond, which is surrounded by Henrico Co. and used to be a part of Henrico Co.]. One late Oldham patent, however, is for land in Augusta Co. and another for land in Culpeper Co. I think there are other patents mentioning Oldhams which I overlooked, such as one for Richard Oldham. Most of those I printed out were for a man [more likely several men] named John Oldham. One dated 1739 for a John Oldham [I do NOT assume these are all the same person, and neither should you] mentions James Oldham's corner *on the north east side the Coach Road adjoining Richard Rout, Robert Bryant &c.* Of course, I will want to check out these neighbors, as they probably intermarried!!! I need to get back to this website to explore all its capabilities and the links to other information. I hope you find this information useful in your search for Oldhams and for associated families in Virginia. E.W.Wallace www.lva.lib.va.us/index.htm
Hi Doug, I am always looking for info on the Park, Henderson, Harris and other families of Madison Co., KY. I sometimes wonder if we will ever figure it all out. I am interested in Henry Harris. You said: "(Henry) Gave two negroes to gr dau Rhoda Dillingham in 1830, at Madison Co Ky." Since Elizabeth or Bettie (as some say one document calls her) Oldham is not mentioned in this will, one has to assume she is deceased. More research of the Madison Co., KY records, particularly of land records, needs to be conducted. Mr. Park, I took great interest in your post because of my Gordon family ties to Madison Co. which were identified in the following book, mentioning my ancestors - Polly Gordon and her father David Gordon. MOSES PARK (1738-1828) : HIS DESCENDANTS AND RELATED FAMILIES@VAUGHAN AND WILCHER by Clara Lorene (Cammack) Park and Wilbur Goolsby Park, Sr. (1991: Gateway Press, Inc.), Many of those mentioned in this 1991 book moved on from Madison Co. KY to Warren Co. TN. Have you ever come across further info on these or other Gordons through your Park research and are they included in your new book? I would like to gain more precise information as to how the Gordons figure into your Park family history. Thank you for any insight. Tei A. I have space left for some additional queries in the Spring 2004 issue of Paint Lick Reflections (paintlickreflections.com). If you are searching for anyone from Garrard or Madison counties (queries are published for anywhere in the two counties, not just Paint Lick), send me your queries and I'll get them in as space allows (if not this issue, then the next). There is no charge for queries. However, you MUST include a complete mailing address because many of my readers (some of them the ones who help genealogists the most) are not online. As always, it's first come-first served! I'd also like to invite you to take a look at the index of the first two years of Reflections at paintlickreflections.com. It took up 30 pages of the Winter issue--and in very small print. Chances are you'll find SOMEONE you're looking for here! Back issues of all except #2 are still available. Numbers 1 and 7 are selling out fast. Subscriptions, beginning with the new volume (Spring-Summer-Autumn-Winter), are available for $23/year, or $24.38 for Kentucky residents, who have to pay the sales tax (to keep me in good standing with the powers that be in Frankfort!) The spring issue will be mailed around Mother's Day. Makes a great gift for anyone who likes to read about rural Kentucky. (I have lots of readers who just enjoy the fine writing, but have no connection to the area.) Thanks!
