    1. Need queries for Madison-Garrard magazine
    2. Rita Fox
    3. Once again, I have space left for some additional FREE queries in the Summer 2004 issue of Paint Lick Reflections (paintlickreflections.com). See what some folks are saying about the responses they've received: I wanted to tell you that I have already received a reply from my inquiry in the latest issue (Winter 2004, which just arrived yesterday), from another great-great-grandaughter of the Gay family I am researching. I am ecstatic!!!!!!!!!!! [... a Paint Lick Reflections contributor] connected me with a person who had put a query in Paint Lick Reflections asking for information about the Baugh family. It turns out our great-grandfathers were brothers! I look forward to receiving my first issue. If you are searching for anyone from Garrard or Madison counties (queries are published for anywhere in the two counties, not just Paint Lick), send me your queries and I'll get them in as space allows (if not this issue, then the next). There is no charge for queries. However, you MUST include a complete mailing address because many of my readers (some of them the ones who help genealogists the most) are not online. As always, it's first come-first served (assuming the query has complete information and doesn't require follow-up e-mails). I'd also like to invite you to take a look at the index of the first two years of Reflections at paintlickreflections.com. It took up 30 pages of the Winter issue--and in very small print! Chances are you'll find SOMEONE you're looking for here! Back issues of all except #2 are still available. Numbers 1 and 7 are selling out fast. Subscriptions, beginning with the Summer issue if your check arrives by July 16, are available for $23/year, or $24.38 for Kentucky residents, who have to pay the sales tax (to keep me in good standing with the powers that be in Frankfort!) The summer issue will be mailed in late July. The magazine makes a great gift for anyone who likes to read about rural Kentucky. (I have lots of readers who just enjoy the fine writing of my many contributors, but have no connection to the area.) Now, be a part of this wildly popular magazine (which is mailed to readers in 32 states and Quebec, Canada). I also send complimentary copies to libraries with genealogical collections in many states. (If you'd like to suggest one, please send me a current and complete mailing address, so your query can be seen for years to come.) Thanks for your attention! 1. HELP, PLEASE! - JOHN BUSH SIMPSON (1834-1902) & Alzirah Gordon Jones - Madison County, KY
    2. Doug Park - The Mystical Gravehunter
    3. SIMPSON and MADISON CO. List Friends, Please take the time to read this and help me solve a family mystery, if you can. I have been searching for the names of PARENTS and DIRECT-LINE ANCESTORS of my 2nd GGF, John Bush Simpson, Sr. (1834-1902) married to Alzirah Gordon Jones (1845-1900). Alzirah's parents were Humphrey Tunstall Jones (1822-1884) and Elizabeth Bentley (1828-1878), desc. of William Bentley of Boonesborough. One of John and Alzirah's sons was FOUNTAIN and he is thought to have been possibly named after John Sr.'s father, possibly a "Fountain Simpson". John Sr. mother is supposed to have been "Eleanor Gibson" for whom my GGM Eleanor Gibson Simpson-Park is named. John's roots could have been at Bush Settlement in Clark County (maternal)--his mother was born in Clark County. John's father was born in Fayette Co., KY (according to marriage bond, but no name mentioned as to who either parent was). John lived in Richmond, KY (Madison County) not far from Boonesborough where most of his children were born. John's wife, Alzirah's father was born in Jessamine Co. John's Granddaughter, Gladys, now approaching 90, is still living and in his homestead. Despite being my cousin and one of the most beautiful people one could ever meet, cousin Gladys does not know who her Great grandparents were (John's parents). Just finding out who John's parents and grandparents were would help me tremendously! I am at a WALL now, but I have enough info to break it down with someone's help in Jessamine, Clark, or Madison County. I believe John has ties to Capt William "Billy Bush of the Fort Boonesborough Settlement. John Bush Simpson, Jr. (Son of My 2GGF, John, Sr.) Obit reads as follows: J.B. SIMPSON DIES, TO BE BURIED HERE (Richmond, KY Newspaper) Jonathan B. Simpson, 44 years old, formerly of Madison Co., KY died at his home near Nicholasville this morning after a short illness of double pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at the residence Jessamine County Thursday morning at 11 O'clock. The Rev. T.C. Ecton, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church of Lexington officiating. Burial will be in the Richmond Cemetery Thursday afternoon, the body being brought here by motor from Nicholasville. Mr. Simpson is survived by his daughter, Miss Vena Elsie Simpson of Jessamine Co.; six sisters, Mrs. William H. Park (Eleanor Gibson Simpson, my Great Grandmother); Mrs. Ed E. Taylor; Mrs. Walter F. Park; Mrs. Edward Horn of Madison County; and Mrs. George McLeod of Bourbon County and three brothers--Robert Simpson; William Simpson; and Joseph Simpson of Madison County. Thank you! 1. John Doniphan, Fort Boonesborough
    2. John Doniphan is listed in the booklet "Early Settlers of Fort Boonesborough." The citation indicates he is included from a "List of Names from Court Depositions in Madison County court House, 1801-1806, 1807, 1808, 1811, 1814 made by the pioneers at Boonesborough." Does anyone know where these records are currently held? Available for viewing? Thank you. Richard H. Pollock, FSA Scot

    2. Do you ever wonder how your ancestors might have died--or why you can not find a trace of that elusive ancestor? This clipping may help: CLIPPING OF THE DAY ===================================================================== >From the "Ohio Repository" (Canton, Ohio), 21 June 1833, page 3: THE CHOLERA At Bridgeport, O. on the Ohio river, opposite Wheeling, containing about 150 inhabitants, it broke out on the 8th with unusual violence. A general panic ensued, and all who could, left the town. A physician and a clergyman from Wheeling crossed over then aid, and found 7 dead, 10 in a state of collapse, and many others in the first stages of the disease, without nurses or physician. On Sunday others went over to their aid, and found 14 dead, none of them buried, and but few laid out. In one house a man and his wife dead in the same bed. Of about 50 remaining in the town, there were not enough well to afford aid to half the sick and dying. Up to the 11th inst 22 had died and but 8 remaining cases, all likely to do well. 1. Lexington (KY) Library - Park Family History Book Blues!
    2. Doug Park - The Mystical Gravehunter
    3. See notes below. I find Lexington (KY) Public Library's inability to receive and catalog CD Family History book donations disappointing to say the least! Of all the many college and public libraries I have donated to around KY and surrounding states, this is a FIRST! They want to give my book back to me! Unacceptable. Mr. Rader, Thanks for your note. May I suggest that you contact EKU, UK and other public county libraries that currently catalogue CD books that I have donated my book to for a suitable interim solution? Could you not type up an index and make it available in the Genealogy area and store the discs in the back, until the new system comes on line? My book is over 1,000 pages in length with 600 pictures--there are MANY Park and Cobb Family members in the Lexington area who would find this resource invaluable. Please don't send it back to me!! I would be very disappointed in the lost opportunity for hundreds that its return would represent. I pray that you find a suitable interim measure to inform your patrons that you have this book and make it available to them. Digitized books are coming of age nationwide and are integral in keeping costs down, including those associated with storage space requirements compared to the hardcopy versions. Please don't give up. Sincerely, William D. Park Hurricane, WV -----Original Message----- From: Rader, Robin [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, June 21, 2004 2:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Park Family of Kentucky History on CD Dear Mr. Park: Last month we received the Park Family of Kentucky History CD. Thank you for thinking of us and forwarding us a copy. I am very much aware of the work that goes into compiling family history, not to mention distributing it and keeping costs down. Lexington Public Library is currently evaluating how best to catalog CD-rom and make it available to the public. In the past our various computers were more or less locked down, prohibiting us from easily loading and making available the many CDs we received. I am not sure when or even if we will be able to make family histories available in this format. The decision will probably be made over the coming months or even the coming year as we implement an entirely new computer system. In light of this, if you would like me to return the CD, I would be happy to do so. Another option is for me to simply keep it uncataloged in my office until a decision is reached. Please let me know how you would like us to proceed. Again, thank you for thinking of us.
