Ann, The Archives at EKU has a large county map with a lot of details, I believe including cemeteries. The quadrangle maps by U. S. Geological Survey, Denver, CO or Washington, DC, contain many details including cemeteries. Some large libraries have complete sets of those maps. I like the KY Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme Mapping, PO Box 298, Freeport, MA 04032. The KY and other state maps are often sold at genealogical workshops. They show cemeteries. I like having that detailed map when traveling through an unfamiliar countryside. "Cemetery Records of Madison County," in two volumes, has a map in each volume showing locations of cemeteries in Madison Co., KY. I am descended from John and Anna / Anderson of Madison Co., KY. But I suspect you are from the "other" John and Anna Anderson of that county. Both were in the county and both couples had a James and a William. Your Andersons have a cemetery that is included in one of the cemetery volumes. My family not only apparently didn't leave a cemetery, it didn't have gravestones! Much more is available about the family that I suspect is yours. Respond directly to me if you want to discuss this further. Good searching - Jay G. Lamb
I will be spending a week in Madison Co. in late August to do research Six of my family lines passed through the county at some time. I appreciated the response to another list member with the info on the archives at EKU. Where will I find a good county map showing the old cemeteries? Any other tips would be appreciated, so that I can make the best use of my time. Thanks, Ann
While finding the two old barns and the cemetery near the site of Nathaniel Hart's Home on KY 388, I could not find the roadside marker about Nathaniel and his home, as described in the KY Historical Marker Database. Since the home was burned by arsonists some time ago, has the roadside marker stolen or torn down? Richard H. Pollock Louisville, KY

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a message re: these three men. First. my thanks to all who replied....you provided valuable info. My message asked about the relationship of Oliver m. to Phoebe Tudor, Stephen m. to Sarah Phelps, and William m. to Hannah Burton. My limited info led me to believe William and Oliver were brothers and that Stephen was their father. Two possibilities have emerged: 1.) William and Oliver are brothers and their father is Stephen; and 2,) Oliver is the son of Stephen and William is the son of Henry and Martha Bondurant Sallee. The common thread seems to be William Guillaume Sallee; I have info that he married twice, first to Elizabeth Givaudan, second to Marie Magdelaine Chastain. William Guillaume appears to be the g-grandfather of both William and Oliver. Oliver m. to Phoebe Tudor descends from William Guillaume m. to Elizabeth Givaudan, their son William Guillaume, Jr. m. to Nancy (maiden name unknown), and their son Stephen m. to Sarah Phelps. William m. to Hannah Burton descends fro William Guillaume m. to Marie Magdelaine Chastain, their son Isaac m. to Frances Eden, and their son Henry m. to Martha Bondurant. William m. to Hannah Burton descends from William Guillaume m. to , his son Isaac m. to Frances Eden. Can anyone help clear up my dilemma? Gary W. Ric, I have Hugh Ross m. to Mary Kennedy, an Agnes Ross m. to Gen. Thomas Kennedy. and an Ambrose (no spouse) in my file as siblings. I also have the names Isaac Ambrose Ross (with absolutely no other information) and James Ross, b. 1786 (no other information), in my file as unrelated individuals. I am descended through Hugh, his son Hugh, his son William A., and his daughter Isadora (Dora-my grandmother). There were quite a few Ross' in Garrard and Madison Counties, KY from the late 1700's on. Gary W. I don't know if they will post them to the web or not. But that index up there has made the search in Circuit Court and Quarterly Court Sessions easier. Kellie

Just thought I would let everyone know that the index to Circuit Court Records in Madison County has been put on their computers. It makes the search much easier and you can search the whole thing or by specific names! Kellie
Gary, I've been to Madison Co., KY several times for research and spend almost all of my time in the Archives at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. You must go to the campus police office and obtain a parking permit. Then walk from the nearby parking area a few blocks to the library. It is uphill a part of the way. There you will find many sources for your research including microfilm of county deeds. It has a database of burials and records of individuals' searches of cemeteries. It has vertical files and copies of many obituaries. Those are a portion of the sources. You'll find more. Many books are in closed stacks and must be requested. The University library has microfilm of newspapers. Most of the cemeteries that I have visited are abandoned so I go after frost as some are in remote areas. I located so much at EKU that I didn't spend a lot of time at the courthouse because I didn't have a need to do so. EKU probably has filmed the will books but I had done those through the Family History Library in SLC. My only regret is not having obtained a copy of an original will at the courthouse because the film cannot be read. I always go to the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. It has many published records. What helped me most were the vertical files of surnames. To me those are a must for each surname. They aren't always helpful but, at times, can include just what is needed. Also look through the file for the county or counties of interest to you. It is located a block or so from the capitol. The Kentucky State Archives in Frankfort is a great place to visit. There you will find many of the older county records that have been given to the state for preservation. There you may find many other records of interest on microfilm. Most city maps will show the location. Good luck with your trip and your research! Jay G. Lamb
I am planning my first trip to Madison County for a little research in a few weeks. I would deeply appreciate any and all opinions on where the best locations for researching Madison County genealogy and history are. I have no idea what exists in the county, or state as well, outside of the courthouse. It would also be interesting to know what vital records exist prior to 1870. I am researching Lamb, Shanks and Lowery(Lowry) surnames in the area. Thanks for any help you all might offer. Gary Plano, TX
Dear researchers, Is anyone able to help me establish the identity of one Samuel Williams of Madison Co., KY, who in 1840 and perhaps earlier was guardian to a couple of young daughters of the deceased Overton Harris (d. testate ca 1827) and his wife Nancy Oldham, dau. of Richard *Ready-Money* Oldham? Was Williams related? A possible connection: Nancy's deceased mother, the first wife of Richard R/M Oldham, was the former Ursley Duke Williams (the widow of Reuben Peoples, first husband). Ursley was the daughter, one of several, of Henry Williams and his wife Elizabeth of early Caswell Co., NC. She and Richard, along with many others of Caswell Co., NC, migrated soon after their marriage. On the other hand: the given name Samuel is not usual in this particular Williams family of Caswell Co., who had roots in colonial Virginia. From Madison Co., KY Court Order Book H-p 59 [August 10, 1840] [SL film 0183277] A settlement with Samuel Williams Guardian to Carlisle Harris Orphan of Overton Harris Decd was returned by the commissioners [of?] account and ordered lay over until next Court... exceptions or approval] [photocopy is dim] A settlement with Samuel Williams Guardian to Nancy Harris Orphan of Overton Harris Decd was returned by the Commissioners of accounts and ordered to lay over until next court for exceptions or approval. Hypothesis: It is suspected, but not proved satisfactorily, that Joseph Williams and Daniel Williams of early Madison Co., KY MAY have been brothers of Ursley. Daniel's presence is questionable, but there are records in Caswell Co., NC that indicate Joseph Williams had relocated to Madison Co., KY. E.W.Wallace gr-gr granddaughter of Carlisle Harris
I am looking to make contact with anyone who is doing research on the Thurman's of Madison County. I am particularly interested in the ancestors and descendents of Richard Thurman. Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you.
Been doing some data entry and am stumped on the following: I have William Sallee m. to Hannah Burton in Madison County, KY on 10-12-1825 (connection is Hannah was a granddaughter of Benjamin Wheeler, my 3-g grandfather). I also have Oliver C. Sallee m. to Phebe Tudor in Madison County, KY on 3-21-1825 and Stephen Sallee m. to Sarah (maiden name and marriage date unknown). Does anyone know what connection, if any, there is among these three men? Instinct tells me William and Oliver were brothers and Stephen was their father. Am I close? Gary W. Concerning some info re available vital records of Garrard Co. and Madison Co. ca 1852 and a few years beyond that, you may want to view films of some of these records. I believe that some of the films are held by the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort and perhaps by the Kentucky Archives, also in Frankfort--but the films are also available for loan through your nearby LDS family history center. (small fee, short time) Here is some info re Garrard Co. vital records--film held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Births, marriages, deaths, 1852-1859 FHL US/CAN Film 216824 Item 2 Here is some info regarding vital records of Madison Co., KY, also on film at the Family HL in SLC: I neglected to copy the film numbers. Births, 1852-1859, 1893-1894, 1903-1904, 1907; marriages, 1852-1859, 1894, 1903-1904; deaths, 1852, 1855-1859, 1894, 1903-1904, 1907. A good place to explore what filmed records may be available is to begin your research with the Family History Library catalog which is online at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) If you know the locality, do a Place search in the catalog. Happy hunting E.W.Wallace

Dear Good Folks, Does anyone know where I might find a list of the major causes of death in the late 1800s in Garrard and Madison Counties? Thank you for your time and attention to my inquiry. Sincerely, Jennifer
Cornelius GOOCH married Eliza WHITE in 1807 in Madison County, KY. They had one son Chiswell D. GOOCH born 1809. Who is Cornelius Gooch's father? Interested in contacting descendants. What was S.B. Gooch's name? It looks like Sarshell on one census.
