    1. Revolutionary War Veteran in Kentucky
    2. Did your Revolutionary War Harris family migrate to Kentucky? Some Harrises who served in North Carolina, in Pennsylvania, and in Virginia (of course) appear on this list: _http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/state/military/kypen.txt_ (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/state/military/kypen.txt) If you wish to read the pension records for any of these persons, the Family History Library in Salt Lake City has almost 3,000 reels of film (from National Archives) of these very interesting pension records. Of course, the branches of National Archives have these also, I am sure. To find the proper reel, I believe you have to do an Author search in the online catalog at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Type in United States Veterans Administration go down the list until you see Revolutionary War [etc] You want the films which are numbered M 804 The ones numbered M 805 are not as detailed. There may be more films than you want to know about--but keep looking. You do not want to order the WRONG film to your local Family History Center. Remember, many widows (second or third wives in many cases) filed, and those files are especially full of interesting genealogical info. Nearly always you will learn the veterans age and his birthplace (which may be wrong, but it may be better information than you now have. One veteran said he was born in Fauquier Co., VA, but that county was not in existence at the time he was born-- so it must have been the parent county.) Send this info to other lists to which you subscribe. Get the word out!!! E.W.Wallace

    1. Re: Basye and Oldham of Virginia, North Carolina
    2. Your Oldham ancestor chart is of interest. I am descended from Jesse Oldham (d. 1814 in Madison Co., KY) whose alleged parents are: Richard Oldham and Elizabeth Basye, probably of Northern Neck Virginia and perhaps later of North Carolina. I say alleged because I have found no documentation that Richard Oldham and Elizabeth Basye, who must have resided near Northumberland Co., VA in 1745 or so, are the same persons who have migrated to Caswell Co., NC (formed 1777 from Orange Co., NC). Indeed, to date, I have found no Elizabeth Oldham in records of Orange Co., NC nor in Caswell Co., NC. Of course, in North Carolina, it was not the custom/law for wives to relinquish dower in the executed deed as it had been in Virginia, at least in the southern part of Virginia. (So says Mrs. Helen Leary--Mrs. North Carolina genealogy--in some of her lecturs.) Do you have documentation of the presence of the same Richard Oldham (as in Basye's will) and his migration to North Carolina? Do you have any land records, wills, tax records, court records--anything at all? Indeed, the early tax lists ca 1777 of Caswell Co. list a seemingly older Richard Oldham. However, I have found no records, other than the tax list, which give me a handle on this fellow coming from Virginia. Richard Oldham is a favorite name among Oldham families of Northern Neck Virginia--for many generations, and in many famiiles, it seems.. We are severely handicapped by the missing records of Orange Co., North Carolina. There is one record--a tax list in Caswell Co., NC-- but can we assume he is the same Richard Oldham, son-in-law of Edmond Basye? We can document the appearance ca 1763 in Orange Co. of Jesse Oldham and his [assumed] brother James Oldham. These are from my notes on Jesse Oldham: Orange Co., NC Records Land records show that Jesse and James Oldham were in Orange Co., NC before April 1763, by the time of the land survey for James Oldham. Also, a Richard Oldham was deeded land by one Jesse Simpson in Orange Co., NC, Nov 1763. It is unclear whether "Jessey" Oldham was a neighbor of James Oldham. He was a sworn chain carrier. The relationship of the two Oldham men to each other is unknown, but the assumptions is they were brothers. "Oldham, James - survey - 29 Apr 1763; 180 acres on north side Haw R., joins Robt. Wells; Robt. Wells, JESSEY OLDHAM: SCC. 2 copies." Hoping that you have some documents about Richard Oldham [of whom there are MANY of the same name]. Perhaps that is my source. 1. Oldhams in Colonial Richmond County, Virginia
    2. Dear Oldham researchers of Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky, and on to Missouri and other parts: There were a number of persons with the surname Oldham [variant spellings] in Richmond County, Virginia, from at least 1721 to at least Nov 1752 (and perhaps beyond). Reminder: Richmond County, Virginia is NOT the same as the independent city of Richmond which is on the James River. Richmond Co. is between the Potomac and the Rappahannock Rivers, in what is called the Northern Neck. The City of Richmond is surrounded by the county of Henrico (again, on the James River) Now, after that geography lesson, here is some information about some Oldhams/Oldums/Oldam families (no, individuals) who appear in court records of Richmond County, Virginia beginning about Jul 1721. These are some of the indexed names which appear in Order Books 9, 10, 11 and 12. Films of these order books may be ordered through your local LDS family history center (hope you are near one), or, if you are in Virginia, you probably can order them from the Library of Virginia. Here are names which appear in the printed index (details below) for Richmond Co., VA: Oldam ..Jr John Peter Rebecca Richard Widow William OLDHAM George James John John, Jr. Juney Junifred Katherine Mary Mary (Northumberland Co.) (10 miles) - [she probably was a witness] Moses Peter Priscilla Rebecca Richard Richard, Jr. Samuel (Samuel (Westmoreland Co.) (15 miles--may have testitied; he was a J.P.) Widow William OLDUM Catherine George George, Jr. James John John, Jr. Mary Peter Porter Rebecca Richard Richard, Jr. Samuel William The index to this particular set of Order Books was compiled and published a few years ago by TLC Genealogy, Miami Beach, FL. The publishing company no longer seems to be in existence, as many of us have ordered their books in the past and would continue ordering if they were still in business. If you think any of these Oldhams may be your ancestors, you may want to do this: Find on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) a link to Forms Find a form entitled something like Request for Photocopies, which you can download and print out. For a fee, you can send to the FHL in Salt Lake City and request the title page, the map of Richmond County, 1859, the total Introduction, pages 1 through 4, and then request photocopies of all the surnames beginning with O (which appear on pages 119-120) You will need the introduction to tell you the date of the page number cited for each Oldham. Without dates, genealogy is rather worthless. The fHL film numbers for these dates are 33708, 33709, 33710. (There are subsequent films, but I don't find an index, at least a published one.) TLC Genealogy had helped a good deal by indexing these films of court orders. There are films of court records (called court orders) preceding these dates and films after these dates. Occasionally, I hae found that some court records of some states have a handwritten index at the beginning of the book, but one cannot count on finding such an index.. Nothing is easy in genealogy, and reading handwritten court records is a time-consuming task, but if you find your relatives, or ancestors, then the effort is worhtwhile. Sometimes you would rather not know about their frailties/misdeeds, but that's life!!! Will you share your findings with the list? E.W.Wallace descendant of Jesse Oldham of Caswell Co., NC and later of Madison Co., KY PS: Please post this to other locailty lists which you think may have an interest in colonial Oldham families of Virginia.

    1. Basye and Oldham
    2. Dear Oldham Researchers of pre-1763 Virginia Some Oldham families related to Jesse and James Oldham later of Caswell Co., NC were found in Orange Co., North Carolina records (court records, as many of other records are missing) and then later in Caswell Co., NC records (formed 1777 fromOrange Co., NC) Some researchers maintain that Jesse and James Oldham were sons of Richard Oldham and his wife Elizabeth Basye of around Northumberland Co., VA, but this is difficult to prove without documentation. Nonetheless, should you be interested in pursuing the Basye line, keep in mind that the testator. Edmund Basye (whom I call II) did not hame a son. Some Virginia experts say that the oldest son, assuming one existed, did NOT have to be mentioned in the will, as by law, he would inherit the land. So, possibly there is a Basye son, but some of us have not discovered such a person. See the cited below. A good many Basye males appear in the grantee index of Culpeper Co., VA in the 1770s and later. Remember, Culpeper Co. was formed in 1749 from Orange County, VA The FHL film to which I refer (for Culpeper Co. index to grantee deeds.) is 30,941. Some of the names of the grantees are Edward, Elizimon, Isaac, Jos, Jas. Edmund, Jr. & A.... [cannot read], Henry and Isaac. The dates of the deeds, called Bills of Sale, were from 1770 to 1815. 3. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, August 17, 2004 6:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: {not a subscriber} Joseph S. Boggs of Madison County Kentucky I recently came across this bio of Joseph S. Boggs. I transcribed it as best I could, but had some trouble reading the dates in the last paragraph. I thought it might help someone. Caroline History of Kentucky page 468 Joseph S. Boggs: Public improvements are the outcome of intelligent and concerted effort on the part of progressive citizens who recognize the debt the community has as a whole owes to the people, and thus endeavors to discharge it in a way that will benefit the majority. One of the most important phases of the work of public improvement is that which deals with the installing and maintenance of good roads, something vital to economic life. It is to this connection that Joseph S. Boggs has rendered great and valuable services to the people of Kentucky for a number of years and in various positions, but principally in his present capacity of state highway engineer. A man of broad experience and high ability in his profession, Mr. Boggs is also prominent in financial and business circles, being president of the Southern National Bank of Richmond, Kentucky, and president of the firm of Boggs, Burton & Company, operating a railroad ballast quarry in Lee County, this state. Mr. Boggs was born on a farm two miles southeast of Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, December 10, 1878, a son of Joseph S. and Mary (Turley) Boggs. The Boggs and Turley families are of Scotch-Irish descent and the former family was founded during Colonial time in Pennsylvania where was born Joseph S. Boggs, the grandfather of Joseph S. of this review. From the Keystone State he came as a pioneer into Madison County, Kentucky, during the time of Daniel Boone, and here rounded out a long successful and honorable career, dying when ninety-six years of age prior to the birth of his grandson. Several of his brothers fought as soldiers during the War of the Revolution, and the family has always been noted for patriotism and good citizenship. The first Joseph S. Boggs married Elizabeth Plough, who was born in Pennsylvania and died in Madison County, Kentucky, and they had a family of eleven children, of whom Joseph S. was the youngest. Joseph S. Boggs, father of Joseph S. of this notice was born June 16, 1819, in Madison County, Kentucky and was reared and educated in that county, where he was married and became the owner of several farms. In 1878 he moved to the farm upon which his son Joseph S. was born, and there spent the remainder of his life as a successful agriculturist and extensive owner of land. His death occurred on his farm February 22, 1899. During the Civil War he served in the Home Guards, and throughout his life he was a republican of the old school. He was a stout churchman and belonged to the Christian faith. For his second wife Mr. Boggs married Mary Turley, who was born and spent her whole life in Madison County, where she died at the age of seventy-two years. They were the parents of four children: Bettie, of Richmond, Kentucky, the widow of James F. Slunher, who was a lawyer and capitalist of Middlesboro, Kentucky; James T., a civil engineer of Richmond whose death occurred in 1903; Mary, the wife of W. L. Arnold of Richmond, a member of the firm of Arnold, Hamilton & Luxon, wholesale grocers, and Joseph S. Joseph S. Boggs of this notice received his early education in the rural schools of Madison County, following which he was sent to Central University, Richmond, and was duly graduated therefrom in 1897, with the degree of Bachelor of Science. Two years later he received his Master's degree from the same institution and at that time became associated with his elder brother, James T. Boggs, in the private practice of engineering. This partnership was terminated by the death of his brother in 1903, and from then until 1913 Mr. Boggs was engaged in a private practice of his own account, being also a member of the firm of Boggs & Farleys, with their headquarters at Richmond. This firm installed the water works system at Richmond, did railroad works in Clay County, Kentucky, surveyed the Dixie Highway from Danville to Corbin, Kentucky, constructed the Masonic Temple at Richmond, and carried through numerous other projects of importance.

Sally's mother Lucy Searcy gave consent. Robert Searcy was bondsman. (Bill & Kathy Vockery, MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY MARRIAGE RECORDS VOL. 1, 1786-1822 [Richmond, KY: Privately published, 1993], p. 89) Joseph's wife, Sally Searcy, who may have been his cousin. Her mother was Lucy (reportedly Williams) Searcy, widow of Bartlett Searcy, resident of Madison Co. but formerly of Granville Co., NC. If Lucy's lineage is correct as projected in this undocumented Bible record cited in Alvahn Holmes [see Comment 2 below], she was a daughter of John2 Williams, Sr. of Granville Co., then she was a first cousin of Henry3 Williams of Caswell Co., who was a son of Daniel2 Williams and his wife Ursala of Granville Co., NC, but formerly of several different counties in Virginia. (To date, early 2001, we lack proof that her Lucy's maiden name was Williams, but there was a close association of Williams families and Searcy families. Earlier generations of Searcys and Williamses had been in Hanover Co., VA. as determined from the few surviving records of Hanover Co. ca 1733-1735.) (Comment 1: Since it is known that Joseph was underage when his father Henry Williams of Caswell Co., NC died in 1785 but was of age to marry by 1796, he probably was born ca. 1766-1770. He would have been approximately 26 years old at the time of this 1796 marriage.) (Comment 2: Lucy Searcy, mother of the bride, was the widow of Bartlett Searcy, formerly of Granville Co., NC. Lucy Searcy said to be nee Williams. This is according to several transcribed Bible records, was the daughter of John2 Williams, Sr. of Granville Co., NC. Refer to Alvahn Holmes, SOME FARRAR'S ISLAND DESCENDANTS and to "Henderson Bible Record." as given in that work. Holmes' work is privately printed, Baltimore, 1979 and is on Film 1033635 at Family History Library, Salt Lake City. In it, Holmes quotes from a Henderson family Bible, which gives two generations of Williams descendants.) However, my independent research fails to prove--or disprove--that she was a Williams. The Searcys were very active in Granville Co., NC. Other Evidence in Madison Co., KY Madison Co. KY Court Order Book, at a court held on Tuesday the first day of May 1798: Ordered that Joseph Williams be appointed surveyor of the road from the mouth of Four Mile Creek to where it intersects the Otter Creek road in the room of Richard Searcy. Lewis Pully & Lucy Williams - 15 May 1817; Joseph Wiliams, father of bride; Samuel Searcy, bondsman. Certainly the naming patterns of the brides--Elizabeth and Lucy-- and in the case of the second cited marriage, the association with a Searcy bondsman, would certainly suggest linkage with the extended Henry Williams-Bartlett Searcy family of Caswell Co. and Granville Co., North Carolina. Elizabeth Williams, wife of Henry3 Williams, was the mother of Joseph4 Williams. Lucy Searcy nee Williams (purported) would be the maternal grandmother of the bride. Joseph Williams and Sally Williams were witnesses to the will of James Harrison, 1806, Will Bk. A (Charles M. Franklin, Madison Co. KY WILLS & ESTATES 1785-1813) Possibly Joseph had died by 1825 as one Sally Williams, mother of the bride, has given consent to this Madison Co. marriage bond: James Mitchell & Sophia Williams, 29 Dec 1825 Wiley Searcy, bondsman; Sally Williams, mother of bride. 2. Doug Park - The Mystical Gravehunter
    3. All, Just a head's up. Below is the 500-Year Park Family History Book I am currently writing and have been since 2000. My goal is to complete it and present the first copy to my father as part of his 76th Birthday Gift on 16 February 2006, culminating with a family celebration to be held on 12 May of that year, coinciding with my 5GGF, Ebenezer Park's 259th Birthday to commemorate the occasion. This book compliments one that I have already completed on the Park Family of Kentucky (7th Edition, 2004 - 1,000 pgs and 600-indexed photos). As I have with my Kentucky book, I will donate a copy to historical societies and libraries in corresponding with appropriate geographical areas that my ancestors lived and flourished. Pray for me in this, my personal endeavor and the legacy I will leave to my family and descendants. 1. Re: OLDHAM
    2. Hi Batha, I was just browsing a cemetery listing for the Old Plattsburg Cemetery, Clinton Co., MO and just happened to notice the info. I am familiar with the Oldham family and had entered some of the Oldham info in my database. I actually research the Henderson family of Madison, KY. Then . . . I looked through my census books, and entered that info, just to make the file complete. The cemetery information is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genenwmo/clinton/ Amazing how all these families moved in the same circles. I was amazed to see Milton there. Hope this helps, Linda
