There seems to be a sudden interest in the churches of early Kentucky, particularly of the Baptist faith. The Baptist churches, at least in the beginning, seem to have many conflicts over certain spiritual matters and split into various congregations, at least according to what I have read. Two volumes pertaining to Kentucky Baptists, among many others of other denomiations, listed in the Family History Library Catalog (familysearch.org) are these two works: A history of Baptists in Kentucky Masters, Frank M A history of Kentucky Baptists : from 1769 to 1885, including more than 800 biographical sketches Spencer, John H I did a search for Kentucky (Place search), checked the topic church history, and found many histories of possible interest to family history researchers. If I remember correctly, the Spencer book has been filmed twice--there are two volumes, so you may have to do some fast reading. However, someone, possibly on this rootsweb list, had obtained through e-Bay a CD-ROM of Spencer's volumes. If you live near an LDS center, you probably can order any of the films you find [with some restrictions] from Salt Lake City. If you do NOT live near an LDS FHC, talk with your public librarian about interlibrary loan. It is much easier for librarians to do ILL with the internet, but some librarians at small libraries do NOT want to be botthered!!! (some public service, eh wot?) Last time (many years ago now) I borrowed on ILL, I had to read the book in the library, as I guess the libraries have lost many genealogically-oriented books. Do your initial shopping on the FHL catalog, then try your State library, some University library catalogs if you live near a University, and so on. Genealogists soon learn how to solve problems. And ask questions!!! But try to make them wise questions. E.W.Wallace

Thanks for posting this information! Although not my family, several of the names mentioned such as Chasteen, Martain, Chenault, and Maupin connect back to the Manakin Towne colony, which was settled by French Huguenot refugees around 1700. There's actually an organization called the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin In the Colony of Virginia, which also has a very informative website for those who may descend from these families. Additionally, I am posting information pertaining to the family of Samuel Boone (from whom I descend through his daughter Mary). As mentioned in the article, Samuel Boone's daughter Rebecca married Roger Jones. After William Hardin died 1803 in Grayson County, VA his wife Jemima and her children moved to the woodlands near Fort Boonesborough where she lived without fear of Indians for many years. John and Thomas (Millar) Miller - John Miller was the father of Thomas. Thomas has indicated on an 1850 and later census records that he was born in NC. John Miller was found in Wilkes County Tax Rolls for 1797 in the Second Company headed by Captain William �Everett� Hardin. John Miller married Jane Hickerson in Wilkes County, NC. She never came to KY as far as I know as she later married James Reynolds. I believe John re-married but her name is not known to me. A son of Thomas Miller, Richard, spelled his name Muller on the 1880 Rockcastle Census leading me to speculate they were descendants of Michael Carmichael Mueller. Thomas Miller married Patience West in 1812 in Madison County, KY. She was the daughter of Richard West, who built and lived in a two-story cabin on Otter Creek. Richard served with George Rogers Clark during his Ohio campaigns. He also served in Edward Baxter�s Virginia Militia and Captain Aquilla Whitaker in May of 1782. Patience�s brother was Jonathan West, and her sister was Polly West. Polly married Edmund Parrish, whose mother was Patsy Goode Parrish. Another brother of Patience, John married Margaret �Peggy� Gentry, daughter of Brightberry Gentry and Elizabeth Jones. Another sister named Elizabeth married John Cornelison, b.1794 in SC. �Dec. 5, 1818- John Evatt received $75 from Thomas Miller for 85 acres on Crooked Creek. Book "C", page 82� �Mar 11, 1837 - Thomas Miller and Patience his wife, received $250 from Edmund Baxter and Polly Woodson of Madison County, for 85 acres lying on the Crooked Creek fork of Station Camp Creek, being part of a tract of 150 acres granted to John Evate. Robert Miller�s farm was located one mile east of Richmond. Robert Miller owned a tavern in Richmond. Robert Miller was originally a Baptist but later united with the Christian Church. Sallie Ann Estill was the daughter of Captain James Estill and Rachel Wright. Her brothers, Benjamin, married Ann Kavanaugh, and Wallace married Mary Hardin. Jimmy�s sister, Rachel Jane Miller, married Napoleon Tevis. Mary Hardin was the daughter of Colonel John William Hardin, b. 1753 and Mary Jane Davis. I believe Colonel John Hardin and William Hardin to be related, if not brothers. Captain John Hardin was the son of Martin and Lydia Waters. I base this upon the fact that James N Hardin, son of William and Jemima, owned acreage in Rockcastle County that abutted the 1,000 acres of William Kavanaugh, son of Philemon Kavanaugh. This William Kavanaugh married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Colonel John Miller and Jane Dulaney. The properties of Hardin and Kavanaugh abutted that of James Chasteen, another Revolutionary War veteran. The property was located at the Crooked Creek and Salt Petre Cave area. The families of Hardin, Durham and Chasteen were founders of the Pleasant Run Baptist Missionary Church in 1820. Please keep in mind that just because you can't find it on ancestry.com, doesn't mean it didn't happen. They don't have access to all the records for all time. Could be these records are recorded in a source ancestry.com doesn't have digitalized, yet. Could be the records from that time period aren't even available. Andrew Tribble’s granddaughter, Elizabeth, (d/o Peter Burris Tribble and Mary “Polly” Boone) married Joseph Gentry, b.1799. He was the son of Richard Gentry and Jane Harris and sister-in-law of Nancy Tribble. Christopher Harris Jr. Was born July 21, 1755, and his spouse was Elizabeth Grubbs. He was the son of Christopher Harris Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Dabney, and grandson of Robert Albert Harris, b.1697, and Mourning Glenn, b.1702. His father had married a second time to Agnes McCord and they had several children. One of his half-sisters, Jane Harris, married Richard Gentry. Another half sister Nancy Harris married Jeremiah Bush. Mary Harris, a twin to Christopher Jr. married George Webb Jones, who was a son of Mosias Jones II. Another important marriage was that of Lucy Harris to William Mosias Jones. Lucy was the daughter of Robert Harris, b. 1749 and Nancy Grubb. Robert was the brother of Rev. Christopher Harris Jr. and this connection to the Mosias Jones family connects the reverend Harris to the Thomas Miller family as well. Roger Jones, brother to Lucy and George Webb Jones, married Rebecca Boone, sister of Squire Boone and daughter of Samuel Boone. Samuel was a brother to Daniel Boone. Jesse Winburn. (From Richard LaMantia) Jesse Winborne was born in Northampton Co., North Carolina. He married Susannah Powell in North Carolina. Apparently they moved to Madison County, Kentucky about 1807, and after settling there he changed the spelling of his name to WINBURN. Jesse was the brother of Dorothea Winborne, who married William Webb. William and Dorothea followed Jesse to Madison County, arriving in 1818. Two of William Webb's daughters married Jesse's sons. It appears that all of the Winburns in Madison and Estill County are descendents of Jesse, using the new spelling from Winborne to WINBURN. Robert Frier, (From Milly McGrane ) Robert Frier , Rev. Founding Members Colby Burris Quisenberry born July 7, 1788, was the son of James T. and Jane Burris Quisenberry. A brother-in-law to Andrew Tribble and their wives were sisters. On a side note, Colby’s brother Jackson married Armilda Shearer, daughter of Thomas Shearer who was to become a member of Union City Baptist Church after the split. (I am also a descendent of the Shearer family.) Samuel Denney Sr. born ca 1722 in Ulster, County Armaugh, Ireland. (Shearer family also from Ulster later became members of this church.) Samuel married Sarah Elizabeth Suddarth ca 1746 in Albemarle Co., VA. Sarah was the sister of Mary, wife of Captain Thomas Martain. Thomas was the son of Jean Martain and Margaret Shattein. This is important because of Jesse Shasteen and why he kept the spelling of his last name Shasteen as opposed to his brother James and his spelling Chasteen. Thomas Suddarth b. 20 Aug 1805 in Burke Co. NC married Catherine Caty Hardin b. 1807 in Ashe Co. NC the d/o Henry Hardin b. 1765 and Catherine Cox. Henry the son of William Everett Hardin b 1741 and Sarah Bledsoe. Samuel Denny Jr b. Bet 1743-1745 married to Elizabeth Dawson Wade who was a sister to Elinor Wade who was married to Jesse Shasteen. Samuel Denny III. b. 1766-1770, son Samuel Denny IV. b. 1790 married to Keziah Lamb on January 9, 1840 and son Robert C. Denny b. ca1802. Sally Jones, b. 1796 daughter of Mosias Jones III, and Elizabeth Baxter, married Robert C Denny. Mosias and his family came from NC and are significant to the background of this church. Sally Jones’ sister, Polly, married Michael Miller who was a son of Thomas (Millar) Miller son of John (Millar) Miller. Mosias Jones IV, son of Mosias III, married Elizabeth Miller, also a daughter of Thomas Miller. Mosias III first married Susannah Maupin, daughter of Gabriel Maupin. Mosias III then married Elizabeth Baxter. The Maupin family lived on Otter Creek, not too far from the Church. The descendents of Samuel Denny include Valentine Washington Hardin and his wife Mary Elizabeth Jones, granddaughter of Esther Denny and Brightberry Jones. Valentine Hardin’s son was Thomas Jefferson Hardin, b. 1882, who married Dakota Boone, and their children, Thomas Atwood, Vernon, and Fonda. This Hardin family descends from William Hardin and his wife Jemima. After William Hardin died 1803 in Grayson County, VA his wife Jemima and her children moved to the woodlands near Fort Boonesborough where she lived without fear of Indians for many years. It is passed down that she was Indian and lived to be 105 years of age. John Winn and Henry Wills. I cannot contribute anything related to them. John and Thomas (Millar) Miller - John Miller was the father of Thomas. Thomas has indicated on an 1850 and later census records that he was born in NC. John Miller was found in Wilkes County Tax Rolls for 1797 in the Second Company headed by Captain William “Everett” Hardin. John Miller married Jane Hickerson in Wilkes County, NC. She never came to KY as far as I know as she later married James Reynolds. I believe John re-married but her name is not known to me. A son of Thomas Miller, Richard, spelled his name Muller on the 1880 Rockcastle Census leading me to speculate they were descendants of Michael Carmichael Mueller. Thomas Miller married Patience West in 1812 in Madison County, KY. She was the daughter of Richard West, who built and lived in a two-story cabin on Otter Creek. Richard served with George Rogers Clark during his Ohio campaigns. He also served in Edward Baxter’s Virginia Militia and Captain Aquilla Whitaker in May of 1782. Patience’s brother was Jonathan West, and her sister was Polly West. Polly married Edmund Parrish, whose mother was Patsy Goode Parrish. Another brother of Patience, John married Margaret “Peggy” Gentry, daughter of Brightberry Gentry and Elizabeth Jones. Another sister named Elizabeth married John Cornelison, b.1794 in SC. “Dec. 5, 1818- John Evatt received $75 from Thomas Miller for 85 acres on Crooked Creek. Book "C", page 82” “Mar 11, 1837 - Thomas Miller and Patience his wife, received $250 from Edmund Baxter and Polly Woodson of Madison County, for 85 acres lying on the Crooked Creek fork of Station Camp Creek, being part of a tract of 150 acres granted to John Evate. Book "F" page 270.” Christopher Irvine Miller, b. 1814 and married to Talitha Harris, daughter of Christopher Harris. He was very fond of company and greatly enjoyed the presence of friends. He was a crack shot with the rifle and shotgun. He was a farmer and upon his farm, near his dwelling, he built a blacksmith shop, which provided everything that was in that day considered necessary and convenient for the operation of a first class shop--including a goodly supply of the best tools of every sort and size, his edged tools were always found to be sharp and in splendid condition, and he knew how to use them. He was a hard and constant worker and he enjoyed his hunting trips and occasional outing, fishing in Station Camp Creek.” Charlotte Pully West was the wife of Jonathan West. Jimmy Estill Miller Married Harriet F Tevis. Jimmy was the son of Robert Miller (born May1, 1775) and Sallie Ann Estill, and grandson of Colonel John Robert Malcolm Miller and Jane Dulaney. Robert Miller’s farm was located one mile east of Richmond. Robert Miller owned a tavern in Richmond. Robert Miller was originally a Baptist but later united with the Christian Church. Sallie Ann Estill was the daughter of Captain James Estill and Rachel Wright. Her brothers, Benjamin, married Ann Kavanaugh, and Wallace married Mary Hardin. Jimmy’s sister, Rachel Jane Miller, married Napoleon Tevis. Mary Hardin was the daughter of Colonel John William Hardin, b. 1753 and Mary Jane Davis. I believe Colonel John Hardin and William Hardin to be related, if not brothers. Captain John Hardin was the son of Martin and Lydia Waters. I base this upon the fact that James N Hardin, son of William and Jemima, owned acreage in Rockcastle County that abutted the 1,000 acres of William Kavanaugh, son of Philemon Kavanaugh. This William Kavanaugh married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Colonel John Miller and Jane Dulaney. The properties of Hardin and Kavanaugh abutted that of James Chasteen, another Revolutionary War veteran. The property was located at the Crooked Creek and Salt Petre Cave area. The families of Hardin, Durham and Chasteen were founders of the Pleasant Run Baptist Missionary Church in 1820.
