    2. The question was raised about locating an obituary in the 1930's. Copies of Madison Co. obituaries are in the Archives at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. They are arranged and indexed by year. However, obituaries were not copied and indexed for all years when I was last there. EKU also has microfilm of local newspapers. It is a great place in which to do Madison Co. research. Jay

    1. Boonesborough and Some of the Early Families in Madison Co., KY
    2. Although nothing on the internet can replace documentation obtained from primary sources (records created at the time of the event), if one wants to know more about Boonesborough, the internet is a good place to begin your education--and searches. Do a google.com search for *boonesborough* A number of hits will come up, and an exploration of each link will give you additional information, it seems, including a map of the area. I began my education about Boonesborough by studying whatever I could find about Col. Richard Henderson. This included searching mostly North Carolina records. My direct ancestor, whose only surviving son migrated later to Henderson Co., KY, was William Williams. He died on or about Christmas day 1775 at Boonesborough. Fortunately, there is an unrecorded will made at Boonesborough among the records of Granville Co., NC. Among the witnesses to the will was John Floyd. But, William Williams, brother of Col. [sometimes called that by Henderson] John Williams, was only one of my ancestors who migrated to and from Boonesborough. Others: Michael Stoner, George Boone [probable], Jesse Oldham of Caswell Co., NC. Good luck with the surname Miller!!! Perhaps William Harris Miller's works on many early families [interrelated, of course] of Madison Co., KY will give you a head start. Here is the full title of his hefty book. It has been filmed by Family History Library and probably can be ordered [for a fee] to your local LDS family history center. It will take you a long time to plow through it. A diligent search may turn up a hard copy in your vicinity. History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh and Brown : with interspersions of notes of the families of Dadney [should be Dabney], Reid, Martin, Broaddus, Gentry, Jarman, Jameson, Ballard, Mullins, Michie, Moberley, Covington, Browning, Duncan, Yancey and others Use with caution. Check against original records, particularly the deeds/probates of Madison Co., KY and for the Oldhams, against the records of Caswell Co., NC. Miller has mixed up a group of Jefferson Co., KY Oldhams with those of Madison Co., KY--they having different migration routes to Kentucky. Probably related in Virginia, but difficult to prove!!! Hope this helps. Hint: I find the deeds of Madison Co., KY help me straighten out some of the family connections. The Commissioners deeds, seemingly of later date, are very helpful in discovering family relationships. (Look in both the grantor and grantee indexes, nicely typed, thank you very much, for the listing under C for Commissioner.) E.W.Wallace

    3. I am searching to prove a daughter of Robert Harris, Sarah Harris, married David Hambleton. David resided in Louisa County and lives next to and by other Harris' including Robert and Benjamin. I have all of Mrs. Davis's books, but no where does David Hambleton (Hamilton) appear with his wife's maiden name. There are many women named Sarah Harris, and I feel one of them married David Hambleton about 1755. The Sarah I need, was born about 1736/37, married David Hambleton about 1755, had at least 10 children, and died in 1816 leaving a substantial amount of money, and slaves to her children. David Hambleton died about 1780, but he had a son named David Hambleton who is in the land records, and court records until after 1830. Some of the Harris' of Louisa Co., moved to the Kentucky area., and I was hoping a brother of Sarah Harris or sister, would surface. Thanks for the chance to post this information Donna Bray [email protected]

    1. John Hudson & Elizabeth Harris of colonial Hanover Co., VA
    2. Dear K McGee You wrote in answer to Ira Harris's query about Obediah Harris the following: X-Message: #3 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 19:48:43 -0800 From: K McGee <[email protected]> To: [email protected] From what I have in my stuff, I believe that most of your Obediahs were Quakers. I suspect that you could follow their family members in the Monthly Meeting records for Randolph Co. IN . . . That is, if they remained Quaker when they married and had children. I'm sorry that I don't have the IN books but I believe you might be able to find them in your library -- especially since you're there in IN. There also might be answers in the Q-R mail list archives. Since I'm supposed to be related to Wm Harris and Temperance Overton through their daughter, Elizabeth (spouse John Hudson). K McGee My response: Although I am interested somewhat in Harrises in Virginia in particular who may have been Quakers and others who may have been Baptists, I am particularly interested in any progeny of William Harris and his wife Temperance Overton. Reason; I am descended from Major Robert Harris and his wife Mourning [believed to be Glen or Glenn], son of William Harris and Temperance. I am descended from Robert's son, Christopher Harris, who died testate in Madison Co., KY ca 1798. (Robert's records are mainly in Louisa Co., VA but a few in Albemarle, and, of course, Hanover is largely a burned county.) Is John Hudson the person who died intestate before March 1733 in Hanover Co., VA? I have a copy of the transcribed/abstracted admin. bond filed by Elizabeth (X) Hudson, William Harris, and Daniel Patrick. This appears in a publication by Mrs. Rosalie Edith Davis, HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA COURT RECORDS 1733-1735: DEEDS, WILLS AND INVENTORIES [Manchester, MO: Published by author, 1979] Do you think the William Harris who assisted in this bond is Elizabeth's father, or is he a brother? Give me your thoughts. Mrs. Davis has transcribed other records for Louisa Co. where Robert Harris and some other Harrises later resided. If you want to see her catalog, this is her website: __http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/_ (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/) _ Remove the punctuation--rootsweb does not like the *raw* URL and rejects my messages if I don't add punctuation of some sort. Mrs. Davis notes *many surnames occurring in these [Hanover Co.] records will be found in Louisa County after its formation in 1742 and from 1761 in Albemarle county records.* I find Mrs. Davis's books of colonial Louisa Co. invaluable for my Harris research--those Harrises of that area, however--not all Harrises!!! There are several references in Hanover records to Charles Hudson. How is he related? Did Elizabeth remarry? E.W.Wallace [female]

    2. I have observed many more frequent messages regarding Garrard Co., KY than messages for the Madison Co., KY. That is mostly because many Garrard Co. messages have been gatewayed from other sites (mostly from Ancestry.com). That way the activity is increased for Garrard Co. on Rootsweb and maybe more connections are made. I wish messages regarding Madison Co. would also be gatewayed. Jay

My father's first cousin was Homer Farris who died in a plane crash in South America March 22, 1934, and I feel sure it was written up in the Berea newspaper at that time. 1. Surnames: Byram/Byrum, Goins/Gowens, Davis
    2. Hello- I am new to this list as well. I have been researching the Bryum/Byram, Davis, and Goins/Gowens families primarily; especially those that moved from VA to KY to Indiana. I am researching in particular James Byram, his wife Nellie Davis (father Joshua Davis), their daughter Maria Byram and their son-in-law Thomas Goins. All three families were from Madison Co., KY prior to moving to Decatur Co/Tipton Co., IN. Researching is difficult due to the popularity of James, Joshua and Thomas in their respective family lines of Byram, Davis and Goins. I believe my Thomas Goins is the one that married Mary Davis in Madison Co., KY on 5-13-1841 initially (father Francis Goins, gfather Joseph Goins, GGgrandfather William) and then married Maria/Mariah Byram later most likely in Indiana. Unfortunately his father's name is too difficult to read on his death certificate (Gracon? Goins b. in VA, mother b. VA) which doesn't match up to my census information. Thomas did have a son named James Goins b. abt 1848 in Kentucky prior to being married to Maria Byram. I believe Nellie and Mary are from the same Davis' lines in Madison but I have been unable to piece them together. Any help would be greatly appreciated. More Details below. 3. Drury S. Ham (no other info) m. Mary Ross, d. of John Ross, Jr. and Polly Byrum, on 6-27-1831 in Madison County, KY; bondsman was David Ross and consent by John Ross, father of the bride (FB) & Watson Ham, oath of age of groom (OAG). Prior to this, the only mention of Drury Ham is in 1795 when he paid taxes in Madison County. Nancy E. Ham, b. abt. 1791 (estimated from the 1850 census when she gave her age as 59), m. William Long, b. abt. 1792 (estimated from the Madison Co. cemetery records listing his age at 66 when he died), on 4-3-1817 in Madison County; William d. 10-1-1858. In 1850, the census shows William, Nancy, and children Drurry (age 14 & b. in Ind.), Levi (age 22), Sarah (also age 22), and William (age 1). In 1860, the census shows Nancy as head of household, a Drura S. Ham (age 23), and an Amanda Ham (age 20). In 1870, Nancy is living in the household of Perry and Susannah Tudor Long, her son and daughter-in-law. I believe Drury S. Ham and Nancy E. Ham may be siblings, based on naming patterns for Nancy's son Drurry (Drury) probably being named after Drury S. Ham. I also believe the Drurry (Drury) who was age 14 in 1850 and Drura (Drury) S. Ham who was age 23 in 1860 are the same person. I think the enumerator probably misunderstood last names, since the age seems to fit. I also think Amanda is probably young Drury's spouse. Can anyone help confirm my suspicions? Gary W. wheeler Cincinnati
