    3. I intended to send this to the list but I guess it went automatically to Erma. So here is a copy: Erma, I noticed you are interested in the Todds from Madison County, KY. My mother had a good friend named Rose Todd back in the early 1920s. I believe it was her mother that ran a store on the corner of Broadway and Depot Streets in Berea. Depot Street is now called Adams Street. There was also fellow named Green Todd. I have a photo somewhere here of him at the counter of the store. My grandfather built the store building and I have a photo of him standing at the front door. Were these Todds related to you? They are not my relations but I remember Mrs. Todd and Green from our visits to Berea years ago. I was born on Depot Street in 1924 but moved away when still very young. Guess I did not sign it either. Maxine Bowling Friedly

    3. Dear Doug, the amoint of work you have done boggles the mind. I aam so sorry but I am not related to any Todd. If I had something on the web about the Todds ,it was a "lookup" for someone. There was a connection,my relative wasWylie B Fisk, an abolitionist, working with Fee and Clay.He was a teacher, minister and jockey.Heaven only knows what else. He came from Montgomery Co to Jessamine Co to teach school .Afterwhich he went to Madison to preach. He preached at 3 churches.Fee said he , Fisk, could not allow slave ownres to attend his church.Fisk disagreed. There was troublre and Fisk resigned. His wife died and he and most of his children moved to, I think, Missouri. He wa my gggrandfatherHis father was Henry Fisk and his mother Susannah Wylie. of Montgopmery Co. In my search for him I communicated wwith Prof. Sears, but got no more than I already had. You are a wonderful historian and I hope whoever was researching Joel Todd, saw all this. I really am sorry/ EmmaRohrer of Richmond Va. Lived in Jessa, ime for 87 years and here for 7.

    1. RE: Joel Todd, Sr. & Nancy Sold 5 Acres of Berea Land to a Black Family
    2. Doug Park - Park Family Historian
    3. Erma, Check this article out on the History of Berea using link below: http://community.berea.edu/EarlyBlackBerea/bereahistory.html Third paragraph from bottom reads: Off Chestnut St., Boone St. rolls downhill to cross Brushy Fork Creek and becomes Slate Lick Rd. Black pioneers Stephen and Sylvia Hagan (Hagins) arrived at night, looking for "Feetown", and missed the settlement on the Ridge so they camped at the foot of the hill near the creek. In 1868, they were able to buy five acres of that land from Joel and Nancy Todd, Sr.. Among the black families who moved nearby were the Caleb and Nancy Bernaugh family, and the Horace and Rebecca Ballew Yates family. Horace was a Civil War veteran of the Union Army stationed at Camp Nelson; a member of Union Church and a literate farmer and landowner. Possibly clues as to where Joel and Nancy were living. Gave the land for the founding of Berea College in Berea,Kentucky. 2. Joel Todd was a member and supporter of John G. Fee's "FreeChurch," Glade Church (American Missionary Association). 3. He was a radical abolitionist and was in the group of exileswhen they fled to Cincinnati, Ohio. Later he would sell land tofreed African American Slaves. 4. From "A UTOPIAN EXPERIEMENT IN KENTUCKY", pg 81. "One familyof white Bereans sold hundreds of acres to black settlers: JoelTodd, Sr., and his wife Nancy Mills, who had been exiled fortheir support of abolitionism in 1860, made land available tomany black families. On February 17, 1868, Todd sold land onBushy Fork to Anderson Crawford, Stephen Hagan, and HoraceYates. These settlers living neighbors to one another, constitutes the now nonexistand town of Canton, Kentucky, apparently their name for black settlers on Bushy Fork. DanielHerron bought town lot no. 4 in Canton from Joel Todd, Sr.February 2, 1869. (Lest it appear that [Rev. John] Fee's policyof interspersion was spoiled by this black village, it should bepointed out that everyone in it owned land neighboring a whiteperson's land on one boundry line at least.) In 1873, JoelTodd, Sr., sold another parcel of land on Bushy Fork to HenryAdams, who had purchased materials for building a house in 1866.Probably blacks were permitted to erect houses on land theyplanned to purchase sometime later. Adams is not the onlyinstance of a black man in Berea building a house before heowned land to put it on. The five acres Stephen Hagan bought in1868 included the house where he already lived. Joel Todd, Jr.,a pre-Civil War student in the Berea school and owner of landnear his father's, also sold to blacks including Horace Yates(1874) and Gibson Gill (1878)." 5. 1. RE: John Todd, Son of Joel & Nancy Todd
    2. Doug Park - Park Family Historian
    3. The Carthage Republican Wednesday, February 15, 1905 Vol. LI No.2662 "John, son of Joel and Nancy Todd, was born January 1, 1826. While yet in Kentucky, he was married September 6, 1846, to Martha Ann Elder, who still survives him. To this union there were born nine children, six sons and three daughters. Of these six survive, four sons and two daughters: J.H. Todd,Jr., Maryville, Missouri; John E. Todd, Carthage, Illinois; Dr. Richard H. Todd, New Sharon, Iowa; William I. Todd, Burnside, Illinois; Melissa (sic) A., wife of Robert Pace, Denver, Illinois; Amanda E., wife of Luke Funk, Scott County, Illinois. Besides the living children, there are fourteen surviving grandchildren. Remaining in Kentucky five years after his marriage, in October, 1851, he removed from that state, settling in Illinois. In the Fall of 1858 he removed to Saline County, Missouri. In April of the following year he went back to Kentucky, staying there until October 1st, whe he again left Kentucky, getting back to Missouri the last of the month. Remaining in Missouri this time about six years, he finally removed from that state in November, 1865, arriving in Illinois December 1st, where he lived until the time of his death. During the whole of his life spent in Illinois he has resided in Hancock County. The past fifteen years he lived in Denver. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1851. In the Winter of 1866, at Mt. Pleasant Church in Harmony Township of this county, he obeyed the gospel, being baptized into the Church of Christ by Brother E.J. Lampton, now of Louisiana, Missouri. Thus for 39 years Brother Todd was one of the Lord's disciples. After a brief illness of little more than a week, he died February 8, 1905, aged 79 years, 1 month, and seven days. That he was a kind father and good neighbor, was indicated by the unusual attachment of his children and the active sympathy of the neighbors in his late illness. The funeral was conducted at the Christian Church by Rev. Buckner. The remains were laid to rest in Denver Cemetery by the Masonic Order of this place, of which he was an honored member."

    3. Erma, Below is a query (1999) that I extracted from Rootsweb on your Joel Todd. It was written by Tom Todd at the following e-mail address: [email protected] Don't know if it is still a good address, but wouldn't hurt to try. Author: Tom Todd Date: 28 Sep 1999 12:00 PM GMT Surnames: Todd, Lee, Elder, Collier, Vermillion Classification: Query In Reply to: Joel Todd by: James Todd Joel Todd (b.8 Mar 1801, Madison Co, Ky) son of John Todd and Martha "Patsy" Collier, married Nancy R. Lee. Of their 10 children, the first mentioned Joel Jr. (b.15 May 1838, Madison Co, Ky) was the tenth child. He married Sarepta (or Serephena) Vermillion. They had 8 children, including a John (b.1869) and a Joel III (b.1871). Joel Todd and Nancy R. Lee's third child was named John (b.1 Jan 1826, Madison Co, Ky). He married Martha Ann Elder. They had 9 children, the second of which was named Joel Howard (b.22 July 1850, Madison Co, Ky) and the fourth of which was named John (b.2 May 1857, Madison Co, Ky). Joel (Sr) was a supporter of the abolitionist "colony" of John Gregg Fee near Berea. Many of his sons and sons-in-law served in the Union cause during the War of the Rebellion while Joel Sr. was exiled to Cincinnati. His son, Joel Jr., attended Berea College after the hostilities ended. I recommend "A Day of Small Things" by Dr. Richard Sears. It provides a good summary of the events around Berea at this time. In Dr. Sear's writing, it is mentioned "...although many of Joel Todd's relations were slaveholders in both Madison and Rockcastle counties (his cousin John Todd was the slaveholding deacon of Scaffold Cane Baptist Church), Joel's sympathies lay with the abolitionists;..." I have not had any luck in finding out more about this 'cousin' John Todd. Perhaps he sired a Joel as well? Quite a mess of Johns and Joels, but I hope it helps in your efforts. 3. Erma, There is a Todd Cemetery near Berea, KY--graves have been moved to Berea Cemetery. Stones had been located in a field opposite and south of the Mayde Road/Hwy 595 intersection. A gravel farm road access road allows parking. Oldest graves are J. Madison Todd (1808-1900), Wife Margaret J. (1812-1901). Doug Park Hurricane, WV -----Original Message----- From: Erma N. 1. [MADKY-L] John Murphy of Madison Co., KY, former NC residents
    2. Seeking history on John Murphy, b. abt. 1766 in NC. He left NC and went to Madison Co. (& surrounding counties) with his 1st wife, Hannah McNamare(a). John Murphy Sr. was a Methodist Minister - there are records of marriages he performed in Madison Co. After Hannah's death, John married Lucy Hughes, b. in McMinn Co., TN. Lucy was very much younger than John when they married. I do not have the dates in front of me, but anyone with knowledge of this family will know what and who I am talking about. John Murphy and Lucy Hughes had children who were among the first students to attend Berea College. Some names are Elhannon and Pearson. I very much want to know John Murphy's whereabouts in NC and who his parents & siblings were. I would love dearly to hear from someone with a connection to this family, or who has knowledge of connections. Many, many thanks, Crystal Murphy GGgranddaughter of John Murphy Sr. & Lucy Hughes

    1. Joseph Williams & Sally Searcy of Madison Co., KY, former NC residents
    2. Dear Subscribers: Joseph Williams in this brief bio (I have more) is almost certain to be the son of Henry Williams (d...... testate Caswell Co., NC) as proved by earlier deeds in Caswell Co. which indicate Joseph Williams is of Madison Co., KY. Here are some abstracted deeds, recorded in Madison Co., KY, of Joseph Williams, grantee, and Tyre Oldham and his wife Nancy, and later between Joseph Williams, grantee, and James French and Kezia his wife. Joseph Williams married Sally Searcy, daughter of Bartlett Searcy (decd) and his wife, said to be Lucy Williams. I have not been able to confirm that Lucy Searcy, originally of Granville Co., NC was indeed a Williams. Can anyone shed further light on Joseph Williams and his mother-in-law, Lucy Searcy? Or on Tyree Harris and his wife Nancy. Does anyone know when Joseph Williams died--and where? Hint: Joseph Williams is a younger brother of Ursala Duke Williams, the widow Peoples, who married Richard *Ready-Money* Oldham in Caswell Co., NC. R/M and Ursala migrated to Madison Co., KY soon after their marriage. After Ursala or Ursley's death after the birth of a fifth child, R/M Oldham married Patsy Reid, daughter of Alexander Reid, an early settler of Kentucky. Reid is believed to have also been of North Carolina. Furthermore, Tyree Oldham is said to be the brother of R/M Oldham, both of them sons of Jesse Oldham, an early explorer of Boonesborough, according to a clipping found in the Lyman C. Draper manuscripts. Submitted by E.W.Wallace descendant of R/M Oldham and his first wife Ursley Duke Williams Peoples DB E-132 [abstracted] 28 Feb 1801 - Tyree Oldham to Joseph Williams both of Madison Co., KY - Tyree Oldham & his wife Nancy for and in consideration of 104 pds. - 52A between Tates Bottom Run & Kentucky River granted to Tyree Oldham by patent bearing the 18th day of May 1796...lines of William Irvine... ln. of Isaac Ware ... Wares Ln No 87... corner to Robert Clarke... ln of Richard Harrison Tyree Oldham [LS] Nancy Oldham [LS] Ackd by Tyree Harris & Nancy Oldham in Madison Co. court Monday the 2nd day of March 1801. Nancy examined privately. (SL film 183,286) DB F-21 [abstracted] 4 Nov 1805 James French and Kezia his wife of Montgomery Co. KY to Joseph Williams of Madison Co., KY... consideration 420 pds. ... 202 acres on waters of Otter Creek & Tates Bottom... being the place where the said Joseph Williams now lives... corner to Samuel South ... Tates Bottom Run... Richard Harrison's preemption of 1000 .. thence with the line of Harrisons preemption... Harrisons line to his corner... branch of Stony Run.. ln of Wm.Smiths survey of 1000 acres... ln of William Irvine & James French... Charles Caffery.. ln of Irvine & French West... ln of Samuel South James French Keziah French I Joseph Williams do hereby declare that the foregoing deed from James French & Keziah his wife is in full discharge of said French's bond to me for the land on which I now live & provided I should find said Bond which is either lost or mislaid. I am to deliver said Bond to said French as witness my hand & seal this 5th day of November 1805. Joseph Williams [LS] (SL film 183,287) This highly abstracted deed is also believed to pertain to Joseph Williams. DB F-706 [abstracted] Woods to Williams, 12 Sept 1808 William Woods & Ruth Woods of Madison Co. KY of same... consideration 1500 dollars ... 100 A. ... parcel of land lying on Hazel Patch Road and on the waters of Rockcastle William Woods [LS] Ruth Woods [LS] Are these brides the children of Jseph Williams and Sally Searcy? Since brides married quite young in this time period, it is conceivable Joseph Williams, son of Henry, is the father of the following brides: Barnett Eades & Elizabeth Williams - 17 Sep 1811 (bond); Joseph Williams, father of bride; Lewis Eades, bondsman. Lewis Pully & Lucy Williams - 15 May 1817; Joseph Wiliams, father of bride; Samuel Searcy, bondsman. Certainly the naming patterns of the brides--Elizabeth and Lucy-- and in the case of the second cited marriage, the association with a Searcy bondsman, would certainly suggest linkage with the extended Henry Williams-Bartlett Searcy family of Caswell Co. and Granville Co., North Carolina. Elizabeth Williams, wife of Henry3 Williams, was the mother of Joseph4 Williams. Lucy Searcy nee Williams (purported) would be the maternal grandmother of the bride. Joseph Williams and Sally Williams were witnesses to the will of James Harrison, 1806, Will Bk. A (Charles M. Franklin, Madison Co. KY WILLS & ESTATES 1785-1813) Possibly Joseph had died by 1825 as one Sally Williams, mother of the bride, has given consent to this Madison Co. marriage bond: James Mitchell & Sophia Williams, 29 Dec 1825 Wiley Searcy, bondsman; Sally Williams, mother of bride. 1. Smith Family
    2. Wanda or Dann Flesher
    3. Hi Traci, We may or may not have the same Smith family. I was stumped with my Smith's until earlier this year when I made a breakthrough. I still haven't made a 'for sure' connection with the Madison Co. Smith family, but my grandmother said we were related to them. I just found some new information in early Madison Co deeds that I hope will shed some light on the connection, and another generation for me. My gg grandmother was Sylvania (pronounced like Cevina) Smith, born 1842, Owsley Co KY, who married William J. Riddell and they lived in Estill Co Ky. She was living in a foster home in 1850 in Owsley Co and this made finding her parents quite difficult. There was a number of other Smith children living in various homes in that census, too. I've researched some of those 'various' families in order to find clues about my Smith family. How far back have you been able to go in tracing your Smith family? It would be very exciting to find a Smith cousin. I have found a couple of Smith men in Madison Co censuses ( in the 1800's) who were born in England, meaning there are at least two sets of Smiths in Madison Co in those years. The one set was in this country from earlier times, and I believe probably lived in TN before moving up into KY. I'm still putting pieces together. I'd love to hear more about your Smiths, and would be glad to share with you, what I've found so far. 1. Re: [MADKY-L] Looking for a cemetery
    2. My Grandmother remembers a similar hill from a funeral she attended circa 1920. That cemetery is located now at the end of Cornelison Road inside the Griggs property. I believe that the cemetery is known as the _____Green Cemetery (named for one if its "inhabitants"), also known as "Hilltop Cemetery" as it is in Hilltop Acres Subdivision off of Barnes Mill Road in Madison County. Hope this helps. S.Poynter
