    1. [MACDIARMID] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [MACDIARMID] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Bernice Catherine MACDAIRMID which was taken at the Leavitt & Keene's Studio in Mankato, Minnesota. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Bernice an infant at the time. 1. [MACDIARMID] McDiarmid brothers emigration to Canada; can anyone confirm?
    2. Robert McDiarmid
    3. According to my family lore, there were three McDiarmid (or sometimes MacDiarmid) brothers who emigrated from Scotland to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in the early to mid 1830s. I can identify with some certainty Archibald (b. 1779, emigrated 1833 (or 1835), d. 1855), who wound up farming in Kent County (around Ridgetown), and whose children included my great-grandfather Hugh McDiarmid (b. 1839, d. 1901 in Hiram, Ohio). So far as I can tell Archibald's wife was Isabell Thompson (b. 1799, d. 1848). I believe that John Angus MacDiarmid (b. 1784, emigrated around 1833, d. 1867) who was married to Catherine Cameron (1782-1878), and supposed to have settled around Fingal, was the second. I can connect both of these to parents John McDiarmid (1747 - ?) and Janet McArthur (1752 - ?), but that is a bit less certain. Both Archibald and John are supposed to have sailed from Glasgow. Family lore suggests that there was at least a third brother, Hugh McDiarmid, who emigrated around 1837, and was thought to have settled around Yarmouth, but I am having trouble tracking him down. Is this something that rings any bells with any members of this listserve? All members of the family at that time appear to have been members of the Disciples of Christ, so I am not having much luck with the records at ScotlandsPeople either, perhaps since the records of that time seem to have been transcribed from those of the more established churches. Thanks for your help. Robert McDiarmid 3625 Fulton St., NW Washington DC 20007 robert.mcdiarmid@starpower.net (202) 342-2651

They have a daughter Mary [b.1790] but I have her married to a William Kennedy. As all the family history is from old diaries it could quite easily be a mistake. I do have her cousin Grace married to a McNab. Mary's brothers and sisters were Margaret [b.1792] married to Peter MacLehose [Campbell], Elizabeth [b.1794] married to James Robertson, John married to Janet McKerchar, Duncan [b.1798] Shepherd thought to have gone to Canada. Robert [b.1801] must have died young as there is another Robert [b.1806] died in Melbourne, Australia. Peter [b.1804] married [1]Jean McDougall [2] Jean McIntyre. Hope this fits in with your family tree. If so I would love to know what happened to Mary and family. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cgpigott Surnames: MACDIARMID, McDIARMID, McDOUGALL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.macdiarmid/14/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Seeking information about the following. Allan McDIARMID, Police Constable, enumerated at 7 Burnside St, Glasgow St George, 1851 Census, aged 33, b Ardchattan, Argylls, with wife Catherine (alias McDOUGALL, aged 25, b Fortingall, Perths), & daur margaret (aged 1, b Balderbnock, Stirlingshire). Allan & Catherine were married, after Banns proclaimed at New or East Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, & at Killin, Perthshire, at the former place, on 3 Jan 1849. They had a 2nd child, named Janet, born 68 Main St, Anderston, Glasgow, 24 Oct 1851. This birth information was witnessed by John & James McDIARMID, both of whom I take to be probable relations. They had a 3rd child, named Duncan, born same address, 9 Apr 1853, same two witnesses. Allan & Catherine, with children Janet & Duncan, emigrated to N.S.W. on the ship "Exodus," arr Sydney 26 Jul 1855. In Glasgow, in 1851, was also enumerated, at 17 Dobbies Loan, Barony, John McDIARMID, aged 35, Letter Press Printer, with wife Agnes (aged 30, b Eastwood, Renfrews) daur Mary (aged 1, b Glasgow). He also recorded his birthplace as Ardchattan, Argyllshire, so I presume he was probably an older brother of Allan, & one of the witnesses to the births of Allan's two children. Any further details on this family would be greatly appreciated. Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
