Hi Florence- This is part of my family, the John about whom you are enquiring being brother to my 5th Great-Grandfather, Ebenezer Martin. I have been in contact with Janet Martin who has done a wonderful family tree - a very thorough job researching, with citations. Janet is not a Martin herself, but her children are. You can access her site at http://www.angelfire.com/home/hammartin/. She doesn't give much information on Mercy Thurber, but you will find information on John Martin and the Martin family. Good luck! I checked the site, and it appears to be pretty well documented. My main interest is Thurber genealogy, and I have recently been researching Mercy Thurber who married John Martin. There seem to be several theories about who she was, but my information is that she was the widow of Richard Thurber. Richard and Mercy Thurber had a son Edward b. 31 Jan 1710 in Swansea. There appears to be no other Mercy Thurber (other than the widow of Richard) who could have been the one who married John Martin. I was hoping to find something more solid to substantiate this. Some sites claim that Richard Thurber married Mercy Stafford b. 1668. This is not likely, since Richard was not b. until 1681, so she would have been 13 years older than he was.. And if she married 2nd John Martin and was the mother of Benjamin Martin b. 1734, then she would have given birth at age 66! There are other reasons to eliminate her as possible spouse of Richard. I am hoping to find something that verifies that John Martin's 2nd wife was the widow of Richard Thurber. I am also curious about who raised Edward. There seems to be no mention of John Martin's wife Mercy Thurber having a child by an earlier marriage. Thanks for pointing me to that site - it did confirm some of what I had. I had the Nov 1757 date for John's death, but have read there may be a Dec 1758 or even Sep 1758 date on his gravestone. Maybe someone from Swansea area has seen the stone and knows the answer.
