Probate in Taunton, even for Westport stuff, but more likely Probate in New Bedford. Check Cyndi's List for addresses & phone numbers. Should be listed as Registrar of Probate. Copies in Taunton used to be $0.75 per page; there may be a search charge now which is why you should CALL. Have all personal information ready. There are indexes for the clerks to consult. REMEMBER to ask if there are "Files" associated with the copied material in the bound volumes. Often times, if there is, there'll be more, much more material such as original copies of wills, inventory, letters of administration, & a host of stuff. The later you get, the more voluminous this can get - if its there at all. At least in Taunton, you have to fill out a separate form for the clerk to check; before 1800 the format is simple - "1727, Ralph Pain, Freetown". After 1800, you'll start to get file numbers and those come from the indexes. As I've not been to Taunton in several years and to New Bedofrd only once, things must have changed, which is why calling is crucial. Persist. You're likely to find wonderful stuff. Robert M.
