In 1904 Pope Pius X set apart as a distinct portion of God's people the parishes of Southeastern Massachusetts and gave them a bishop who would have his Cathedral in the City of Fall River. This of course was not the beginning of the Catholic Church in this area. Since 1872 the territory of the new Diocese of Fall River had been a part of the Diocese of Providence and previous to that part of the Diocese of Boston. How long has Fall River been a separate diocese? Prior to that time, was it part of Providence or Boston? Thanks. Betty g. Also, what Catholic Church would have been located at 274 Second Street, Fall River in May 1900? Thank you for any help you can offer. Nancy Hi, I'm not sure if I've seen all of the posts in this thread, but I believe that the Catholic churches of Fall River are part of the Diocese of Providence (RI), not part of the Diocese of Boston. I visited the Archives at the Diocese of Boston, across from Boston College, several years ago. I recall that they told me that after my ancestors left Boston and moved to Fall River, their records would no longer be there (@ the Archives across from Boston College).
