    3. Jim... Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? My husband's great grandfather states in his civil war pension application record that he was born in Fall River but I have been spectacularly unsuccessful in locating his family or his birth record. I know state lines changed over the years. Anthony Lally was born about 1844, give or take a few years either way. 1880 Gloucester MA Census records state he was born in MA. I think the family was told after Anthony's death (1889) that he was born in SC,when in fact he stated in his pension application that he lived in Charleston for a short while prior to the war, but was born in Fall River MA. I have contacted both the city of Fall River and Bristol County County they both tell me there is no birth record for him. MA Archives says he was born in Charleston SC. But I believe his daughter provided that info after his death. I have thoroughly researched that area with the help of several librarians and there is no sign of the family in SC. I am puzzled where to look next. I am sure it was possible for him to be born with out there being a record...but I am not ready to give up yet. Suggestions appreciated. 3. Interesting puzzle. Some documents say SC, some say MA. I have a similar conundrum: a man married into my mother's family: 9 records, [2 marriages and 7kids], 5 say he was born in CT, 2 votes for MD, one for PA, one for VA. Unresolvable!! Fall River, prior to 1872 belonged to the Diocese of Boston. The problem there becomes what parish? what year? Massachusetts vital records begin about 1845 and they are sparce. This website http://www.rootsweb.com/~ussnei/FRdiocese.htm will tell you when each church in the FR area opened up. It MIGHT help. Looks to me as though in FR prior to the French church in 1869 there was only one, St. Mary's, founded in 1837. But do they have birth records, or baptismal records going back that far???? A year ago I went to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to track down a birth of a relative. Ans: The state of Michigan started keeping records just about that time. Two children got recorded; the third was born a year too early. Best I could do was settle for a baptismal date from the only Catholic Church in the area. If the man said he was born in FR, I would believe him, and then use other data, no matter what they said about location, to narrow in on his birth year. Personally I rely on the Census to get an approximate year. Sometimes, I think, I will never get closer than "about xxxx". As to state lines changing: the section of today's FR that is adjacent to Tiverton, RI used to be 'Fall River, RI'! There was a border change between RI and MA. Others on Mabristo will know. I forget what year it happened. But I don't think that knowing will solve your problem. How old did the 1880 Census for Gloucester say he was? Plus or minus 1, it is probably correct. That's all I can think of at the moment. But don't hesitate to challenge me. Jim. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regena Lally" <jrl91@cox.net> To: <mabristo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 1:36 AM Subject: Re: [MABRISTO] Annulment Records & Death Records > Jim... > > Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? 3. Regina- The NEHGS has many of the vital records posted at their site. You have to be a member to access it, but maybe someone here is, and can look up Anthony Lally for you. Besides the Fall River area, I would look for him in the surrounding RI towns. I think someone answered this already, but the Diocese of Providence was part of the diocese of Boston before 1872. Boston was created in 1808. A good site for this kind of information is www.newadvent.org Lisa llepore@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regena Lally" <jrl91@cox.net> To: <mabristo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 1:36 AM Subject: Re: [MABRISTO] Annulment Records & Death Records > Jim... > > Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? 3. Gena, I saw your query, and did some poking around. I found the 1880 Census that you mentioned for Anthony, and noted he had 2 children: Frances C, and Charles A. I too, found Charles A. Lally's birth record for Dec 29, 1879 born in Gloucester, Mass, it states parents: Anthony & Mary E. Phalen; Father Occupation Mariner; Father born: Charleston SC; Mother born Nova Scotia. But Also found Daughter Fanny C Lally's birth record: born Aug 27, 1878, in Gloucester, Mass, shows Parents; Anthony & Mary E. Phalen; Father Occupation: Mariner; Father born Charleston, SC; Mother born [Gayeboro P.S.] Have you tried locating a marriage record for Anthony & Mary?
