Hello, I'd like to ask a general question. Back in the 1905 time period, if a single man, Age 20, left the Azores to come to the USA, and came to Massachusetts, would he have had to have plans on where to go and what to do when he arrived? Continuing on, if he had no plans for what he would do and where he would live upon arriving, what would he have done? Would he have asked the other people on the ship about where he could get "housing?" Or, would he have waited till he arrived and then start asking for help? Also, in general, would the families and/or single adults coming from the Azores in the 1890 to 1910 timeframe .. have come into Boston or New Bedford? Would they have had a choice? Or, would they have gotten onto whichever ship was available to them? Also, if a single man from the Azores arrived in New Bedford, for example, how long would he have stayed in that city .. if he didn't already have a job? Would he have just stayed there until he found work? Or, would he have asked around for where work was available? How many of the Azorean immigrants would have just headed directly to the Boston area? I am researching ..Antonio PACHECO.. who reportedly arrived in MA in 1905 as a single man. We do not know which Port he sailed into. He probably married "Elsie" MOURA in 1913, but we don't know which city it would have taken place in. (She had probably arrived in 1901 as a child.) They lived their married life in Cambridge, MA. Antonio was killed in a car accident in Taunton, MA, in 1928. He was reported to have been a carpenter. His family knew of NO relatives in the USA. This month I will start trying to find out if he had any living relatives in St. Michael's, Azores, when he died. (He came from the village of Sao Roque, and his parents were Joseph and Jessie (COSTA) PACHECO.) Thank you for your time.
