For many years, our family has been stumped as to the origin in the Azores of the MARSHALL family of Norton & Attleboro, Massachusetts. Last year I found a birth record of a child who did not survive and it is the ONLY record which gave the birthplace of the parents as something more specific than: "Western Islands" or "Azores" or "Portugal" It has just now occurred to me that the spelling that I found in that record is a poorly written version of "TERCEIRA" Jose Machado AKA Joseph MARSHALL aka Joseph MARCHAL immigrated about 1897 first to Rhode Island where he and his wife had at least two children then removed to Norton, Bristol, MA after a few years. His wife was known as Mary SEARS but records say her family name was ALVERES. I have always suspected the the SEARS families of Norton and Attleboro MA who had Azorean origin were actually SOARES but have found no concrete proof. Jose Machado born Terceira about 1872 son of John Machado (assume Joao Machado) married Maria Augusta SEARS ALVERES about 1882 somewhere in Azores (probably Terceira) and had at least three children in the Azores before emigrating to Rhode Island about 1897. By 1904 this family was in Norton, MA.
