    1. Thurber DNA project
    2. Florence Gargaro
    3. The Thurber DNA project has had some initial success, but the help of additional Thurber males is needed. The Thurber surname was first used by John and Priscilla Thurber who were in Swansea Massachusetts in Feb. 1668/9. The Thurber name was continued through their four sons - John, James, Thomas, and Edward. Census records from 1790 through 1930 consistently show Bristol County to have more Thurbers than any other Massachusetts county. The nearby state of RI also has been the home of many Thurbers - including Benjamin b. 1720. He is the ancestor of a large number of Thurbers, but until the DNA project he had not been shown to be a descendant of John and Priscilla. Initial DNA test results have shown exact matches between 4 descendants of Benjamin, and a person in my Thurber line - which (on paper) goes back to John and Priscilla. This points to the strong possibility that Benjamin was a descendant of John and Priscilla. However, this is relying totally on the accuracy of my line. With additional participants with paper trails back to John and Priscilla, this connection could be proven. The primary goal of this project is to help Thurbers with their genealogies. With sufficient participation, the project should help Thurbers confirm or disprove relationships currently based on "paper evidence." This project tests the Y-chromosome. The Y-chromosome, found only in males, is passed from father to son, and remains nearly unchanged through the generations. By comparing participants' genetic markers (the exact number depends on the test chosen), it can be determined if they share a common ancestor. Although females cannot participate directly in the project, they can help by letting male relatives with the Thurber surname know about the project, or by contributing to the cost of tests. The more who participate, the more we will learn. If you are a male with the surname Thurber, please consider joining. The test is done using a simple swab of the inside surface of the cheek. To check out the project go to www.familytreedna.com/public/thurber. If you are a Thurber who has not traced his/her Thurber line and would like to know more about your Thurber ancestry, please email me. I have assembled a large library of Thurber-related material and would be happy to share information to help you discover your Thurber roots. Florence Thurber Gargaro

    3. These were the only records I found with a surname remotely like Critchley. The transcribers really butchered the spellings on the census images. 3. Thank you Donna for all the info you have found for us. Appriciate it alot. Will send over the Critchleys you found in New Bedford to cousin in the UK for him to ck and see what he can find on them The one below Robert Critchley I think I found he came from Wigan Lancs England in a ship records abit ago ...not sure if he is close relation or a cousin going on where he was br Wigan... it can get so complicated cause you think you got someone and then you find out Nope not them thats another line ....just by where they lived in the UK and their trade.... There are alot of Critchleys in Lancs England ..its like Smith is here almost...its sorting out the different lines that gets complicated.... I have another cousin in the UK that comes from one line of Critchleys and this other one comes from another line of them not related to hers cept through Keiths gggrandfathers 'happy hr' with a Holden cousin of ours ....... alot of times you go by their trade as to how they would fit into the correct lines. Rosalinds were colliers [miners] Keith's were joiners... some lines are weavers. ..... Keiths came from St Helens to Blackburn. You can get lost in Critchley land big time....so with what you have sent we will search them out in the UK census' s and see how they fit or if they don't.... Also will send the info over to the UK Critchley mailing list and see if someone can connect to them that lost them in the UK ... Thank you again very much for your time and help Sharon Donna Rhyne wrote: >1920; Census Place: New Bedford Ward 1, Bristol, Massachusetts; Roll: >T625_685; Sheet 3B, stamped page 238B; Enumeration District: 117 > >Robert Critchley 46, b England, Weaver Cotton Mill; wife Mary, 40 b >England; daughter Mary 11, b MA > >Both Robert and Mary arr US in 1904, Aliens > > > >_ > > > > >

    1. CRITCHLEY surname New Bedford Mass
    2. slc33
    3. New to list Have a distant cousin in Blackburn Lancashire, UK who has traced some of his family to New Bedford Mass. Surname is CRITCHLEY I received this email from Keith Critchley today I have a letter from Herbert Critchley, dated January 8th 1941, and posted from 135 North Road, New Bedford, Mass. Addressed to my father Henry Critchley. Searching through various info I came across the 1901 census entry for an address in Blackburn for John Critchley (Henry's eldest son), born 1860, and John's family- wife and 5 kids, including Herbert aged 7. Later, found an entry in USA records: Herbert Critchley, DOB March 2nd 1894, died New Bedford, August 1967, aged 73. All the dates match up! In the letter he mentions that he has friends also from Blackburn living there, but no mention of any family. Is it possible you may be able to find out more? Herbert's father John and my great grandfather Edward were brothers. I know nothing about the other brothers/sister who came to Blackburn with Henry, so anything would be appreciated. Keith So far I have found and sent over to Keith ship list files and an obit ... Herbert came to vist his brother Ernest in 1923 in New Bedford ...Herbert was listed as a Pro Boxer. left his wife in Blackburn. I found his brother Ernest came in 1922 and he came to his cousin Mr Turner in New Bedford Mass.... Ernest was a driller on the ship list. Not sure yet when Herbert came over to New Bedford tho. Possibly going on son obit it was in the 1920s Found this obit for one of Herberts son's 1997 Leslie Critchley NEW BEDFORD -- Leslie Critchley, 79, of Acushnet, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Mildred (Bradshaw) Critchley and son of the late Herbert and Elizabeth (Porter) Critchley. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, Mr. Critchley lived in this country more than 70 years. He worked at the Hathaway Mill as a loom fixer and was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Besides his widow, Mr. Critchley is survived by a son, David L. Critchley of Londonderry, New Hampshire; and a granddaughter. Arrangements are by the Latham Funeral Home, 823 Brock Ave., New Bedford. Need to do census searching and more ship lists to see if I can find Herbert Is there a Historical Society in New Bedford that we might contact to see if they might have more info on Herbert and Ernest Critchley? Is there a Library in New Bedford that we can contact for obits if possible on Herbert and Ernest and their wifes ? Thank you Sharon

    3. Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to have a copy of marriage, birth or death from a church in Taunton. I am looking for the marriage of Ismael Menard and Diana Dion they were married October 31, 1899 in Taunton, Bristol, MA. Ismael was born in Taunton on May 4, 1874 and at least one child Pierre on February 6, 1899. I also know that at the marriage of Pierre in Napierville, Qc on October 29, 1924, Ismael and Diana were living in St-Philippe, Qc. When did the family move in Quebec province? I do not know, and I do not know how to find out. Do you have any advice for me? Any help will be appreciated. Have a good day, Agnes

    3. Canada has some great websites and census records which could help you find out when they moved there. Since I haven't used it lately, try googling to find it. If you cannot, give me a week and I will try and dig it up. Unless you specifically want the Church record, you can go to the MA Archives for copies: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcgen/genidx.htm#1841 The charge was $3 each don't know if it is still the same. In the 1900 census in Taunton, Ismael b. May 1874 came to us 1885; wife Rosanna b. Aug. 1880 came to US 1882. No children listed as yet as they were newly married. In the 1910 census there is an an Ismael Menard 36 with a wife Joanna? 32, m. 11 years both b. Canada and children Alexandre 9 b. MA, Pierre 7 b. MA, Victoria 4 b. Canada , Dorilla 2/12 b. MA?, and his brother Zenon 33 b. Canada all living in Taunton. Close by is living another Menard family, Philip and Philomene and children and also a Dion Family , Joseph and Mary and children. No listing for 1920 census, unless the surname is misspelled. A couple of people have done a Rootsweb world tree that you can access by going to this site. Elaine

    3. As you well know, spam has become a significant problem in recent years. Because of that I have used a "disposable" email address which is posted on my web sites. Unfortunately, when I set up my personal genealogical pages they were tied to that "disposable" address. That address is now attracting hundreds of spam emails per day, and I have had to deactivate it and replace it with another address. This means that my personal genealogical pages, including my Packard and Washburn pages, have had to move to a different address. The entry point for all of my genealogical pages, both personal and for the USGenWeb Project, is now: http://members.cox.net/plymouthcolony/index.shtml Please change your bookmarks to reflect the new address. Any bookmarks with "members.cox.net/oldcolony" in their address can be changed to "members.cox.net/plymouthcolony" to point them to the new pages. Dale H.
