    3. Tough one. Massachusetts vital records in the State Archives start about 1845. Good census' start in 1850. 1789 is a stretch. The first Boyle to arrive in Gaspé was James who arrived in 1789, supposedly from the Boston area of Massachusetts. He came to Gaspé with his wife Mary and children – John, George, Jane, Mary, and James. The family may have been United Empire Loyalists but I have found no records as such. Perhaps someone has a lead for me. 3. Interesting puzzle. Some documents say SC, some say MA. I have a similar conundrum: a man married into my mother's family: 9 records, [2 marriages and 7kids], 5 say he was born in CT, 2 votes for MD, one for PA, one for VA. Unresolvable!! Fall River, prior to 1872 belonged to the Diocese of Boston. The problem there becomes what parish? what year? Massachusetts vital records begin about 1845 and they are sparce. This website http://www.rootsweb.com/~ussnei/FRdiocese.htm will tell you when each church in the FR area opened up. It MIGHT help. Looks to me as though in FR prior to the French church in 1869 there was only one, St. Mary's, founded in 1837. But do they have birth records, or baptismal records going back that far???? A year ago I went to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to track down a birth of a relative. Ans: The state of Michigan started keeping records just about that time. Two children got recorded; the third was born a year too early. Best I could do was settle for a baptismal date from the only Catholic Church in the area. If the man said he was born in FR, I would believe him, and then use other data, no matter what they said about location, to narrow in on his birth year. Personally I rely on the Census to get an approximate year. Sometimes, I think, I will never get closer than "about xxxx". As to state lines changing: the section of today's FR that is adjacent to Tiverton, RI used to be 'Fall River, RI'! There was a border change between RI and MA. Others on Mabristo will know. I forget what year it happened. But I don't think that knowing will solve your problem. How old did the 1880 Census for Gloucester say he was? Plus or minus 1, it is probably correct. That's all I can think of at the moment. But don't hesitate to challenge me. Jim. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regena Lally" <jrl91@cox.net> To: <mabristo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 1:36 AM Subject: Re: [MABRISTO] Annulment Records & Death Records > Jim... > > Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? Civil birth records were not required in SC till about 1915. But many Charleston church records are available back into the early 1700's... so that might be an option for you. URQ

    3. Jim... Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? My husband's great grandfather states in his civil war pension application record that he was born in Fall River but I have been spectacularly unsuccessful in locating his family or his birth record. I know state lines changed over the years. Anthony Lally was born about 1844, give or take a few years either way. 1880 Gloucester MA Census records state he was born in MA. I think the family was told after Anthony's death (1889) that he was born in SC,when in fact he stated in his pension application that he lived in Charleston for a short while prior to the war, but was born in Fall River MA. I have contacted both the city of Fall River and Bristol County County they both tell me there is no birth record for him. MA Archives says he was born in Charleston SC. But I believe his daughter provided that info after his death. I have thoroughly researched that area with the help of several librarians and there is no sign of the family in SC. I am puzzled where to look next. I am sure it was possible for him to be born with out there being a record...but I am not ready to give up yet. Suggestions appreciated. 3. This is forwarded from a Scottish mailing list, from an Australian subscriber; thought it might be of interest since the ship was from New Bedford.... > >From the Wigtown Free Press 15th April, 1858 > MUTINY AND MURDER ON THE HIGH SEA :- The Sydney papers contain accounts of an extra ordinary act of piracy and murder. They state- "Considerable excitement was caused by the arrival on the 11th of January of the American whale ship "Junior", of New Bedford, in charge of her first officer, who reported that a mutiny had broken out on board the vessel on Christmas Day, which had resulted in the murder of the captain and the third mate, and the desertion of the ship by the mutineers. The mutineers took possession of the ship with the intention of taking her to some distant port and selling her, but were unable to do so from their ignorance of navigation. On the fifth day after the mutiny the retreat of the first officer in the lower hold was discovered, and his life, although in danger from the violence of Cartha, who appears to have entertained a bitter enmity against him for previous ill treatment, was spared on condition that he would take the ship into the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. When the men left the ship they imposed an oath upon the chief mate to take the ship on to New Zealand. Had he done this they would have had a considerable time before them to provide for their own safety. But, of course he regarded the oath thus forced upon him as imposing no moral obligation and he determined upon making towards the nearest port at which he could get assistance for the ship, and invoke the arm of justice to pursue the mutineers. He at first shaped his course towards Hobart Town, but, meeting with the intercolonial trader, he was advised to bear up for Sydney, and did so. The excitement here on hearing of this mutiny, as well as the public sympathy with its victims, was ??? great. Soon afterwards word was brought of some of the men having been seen at Gabo Island, and a steamer was at once despatched in search of them, with an armed party of police. The location of the ?? however, secured three of them. The fourth Cartha, escaped into the bush, but he has since been captured." > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Also, what Catholic Church would have been located at 274 Second Street, Fall River in May 1900? Thank you for any help you can offer. Nancy Hi, I'm not sure if I've seen all of the posts in this thread, but I believe that the Catholic churches of Fall River are part of the Diocese of Providence (RI), not part of the Diocese of Boston. I visited the Archives at the Diocese of Boston, across from Boston College, several years ago. I recall that they told me that after my ancestors left Boston and moved to Fall River, their records would no longer be there (@ the Archives across from Boston College). Betty G.

Have you tried calling the town clerk of Westport to see if there is a death record for them there? I have done that for Attleboro MA records, Florence

    3. Barbara, I expect they are already both dead. I just lose track of them after 1920 and the death records are not available to the public as in the library or archives. I don't live in Massachusetts so I was hoping for someone who was familiar with Daniel A. Crapo possibly as part of their family/research. Stefanie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. John, Daniel A. Crapo married Minnie W. Little Baker. He was her 2nd husband. I was looking forward as to what happed to them. In 1920 they are in Westport. I can't find them on the 1930.
