Hi Barbara. I was able to get the marriage record from Gloucester Archives. Apparently a return was never filed with the state. So yes, I do have that one. Now I will have to go back and check out Fanny's birth record to see what is there. Don't you love these conflicts ;-{ I do thank you for you help! Gena, I saw your query, and did some poking around. I found the 1880 Census that you mentioned for Anthony, and noted he had 2 children: Frances C, and Charles A. I too, found Charles A. Lally's birth record for Dec 29, 1879 born in Gloucester, Mass, it states parents: Anthony & Mary E. Phalen; Father Occupation Mariner; Father born: Charleston SC; Mother born Nova Scotia. But Also found Daughter Fanny C Lally's birth record: born Aug 27, 1878, in Gloucester, Mass, shows Parents; Anthony & Mary E. Phalen; Father Occupation: Mariner; Father born Charleston, SC; Mother born [Gayeboro P.S.] Have you tried locating a marriage record for Anthony & Mary? Hi, I have "A History of Rehoboth Massachusetts" by George Tilton, 1918. I didn't see a Humphrey on the earliest lists of settlers, but if you can give me any names and dates I'll see if there's anything there. It has sections on the earliest settlers, different wars, churches, schools and teachers, manufactures, biographies, some cemeteries, etc. Also, I have some info on earlier Bosworths. I'm descended from Jonathan Bosworth and Elizabeth Shaw of Rehoboth. sknox31@comcast.net wrote: Scott, If you have any specific names for Rehoboth I'd be happy to lookup info for you. Dear Scott, In addition to the books that Dale recommended, there is a small book (about 150 pages) by John Raymond Hall, *In A Place Called Swansea*. This book has several lists which give the names of the first settlers and a survey of the 1675 families including their ranks. Swansea was one of the few, or maybe the only town which gave the male inhabitants "ranks" which were used for land distribution. There were three ranks, the first rank of nine being the minister and eight of the most prominent men of the town. According to Hall, the second rank was the "sturdy, energetic, and skilled practitioners who make up the productive infrastructure of a community." The third rank was "the young marrieds, with an emphasis on sons, younger brothers, cousins, and in-laws of those in the higher ranks." I don't really know if you can find a copy of this book; I borrowed it from the NEHGS circulating library years ago and copied what I thought were the pertinent pages, but alas, the circulating library no longer exists. Since Swansea was formed from Rehoboth the best starting point is probably Richard LeBaron Bowen, "Early Rehoboth Families and Events" (NEHGR, 98 [1944]:163-177, 234-248, 317-330; 99 [1945]:93-109, 227-242). The magazine series was expanded and published as Richard LeBaron Bowen, "Early Rehoboth: Documented Historical Studies of Families and Events in this Plymouth Colony Township," 4 Vols. (Concord, MA: The Rumford Press, 1945-1950). There is also Otis O. Wright, "History of Swansea, Massachusetts, 1667-1917" (Swansea, MA: Published by the Town, 1917), but I have not seen that work and do not know how much genealogical information it contains. I checked Frederick Humphreys, "The Humphreys Family in America" (New York: Humphreys Print, 1883) but found no help there. Dale H. Regina- The NEHGS has many of the vital records posted at their site. You have to be a member to access it, but maybe someone here is, and can look up Anthony Lally for you. Besides the Fall River area, I would look for him in the surrounding RI towns. I think someone answered this already, but the Diocese of Providence was part of the diocese of Boston before 1872. Boston was created in 1808. A good site for this kind of information is www.newadvent.org Lisa llepore@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regena Lally" <jrl91@cox.net> To: <mabristo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 1:36 AM Subject: Re: [MABRISTO] Annulment Records & Death Records > Jim... > > Can you tell me prior to 1872 where the diocese was? Hi Gena , You might try Tiverton R.I. Town Hall for your husbands Great Grandfather. I have ancestors who were born in Tiverton R.I., in the early 1800's and by the 1880's they were listed in the Census records as being born in Massachusetts. It sure gets confusing. Part of Tiverton officially became Fall River in 1862 but before that it was also called Fall River R.I. from 1856-1862. Tiverton is part of the Providence R.I. Diocese . I don't think there were any Catholics around that early in the 1800's I hope you find what you are looking for in Tiverton. Good Luck Marge >>Anthony Lally was born about 1844, give or take a few years either way. > 1880 Gloucester MA Census records state he was born in MA. Thank you Marge. It is certainly worth a try. I would be so excited to finally find evidence of this family prior to 1876! Gena > Hi Gena , > > You might try Tiverton R.I. Hi James, Maybe this is your family click this link http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dar&id=I31132 Good hunting, Lorna ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Caputo" <jfcaputo@sympatico.ca> To: <MABRISTO@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 5:02 PM Subject: [MABRISTO] Boyle Genealogy Hello to all, I am new to the list and hopefully someone out there may be able to help me trace my ancestors to the New England area of the U.S. The family that I am trying to trace is the Boyle family of Gaspé, Quebec, Canada. The first Boyle to arrive in Gaspé was James who arrived in 1789, supposedly from the Boston area of Massachusetts. He came to Gaspé with his wife Mary and children – John, George, Jane, Mary, and James. The family may have been United Empire Loyalists but I have found no records as such. Perhaps someone has a lead for me. Many Thanks, Jim ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MABRISTO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Perhaps one of the following hints If James was a seaman or fisherman, he could logically end up in Gaspe for economic reasons. If you check the Vital records of Mass to 1850 in NEHGS online, you would not find many persons named Boyle -- but along the north shore of Mass (Gloucester, Newburyport, etc) you find Boyles in good number. There is a James Boyle in NEHGS records of Newbury MA -- intentions recorded for James Boyle and Abigail Plumer (Plumber) Sep 29 1744. I don't see any other records for that James. NEHGR 84:144 Boyle's Journal of Occurrences in Boston details many persons named Boyle. Not sure about yours, but there is one interesting quote: "(John)Boyle married secondly 30 Jun 1778 after his return to Boston, Elizabeth Cagneau, who bore him at least five children and outlived him." The name of the fifth child is James Boyle but he is a minor in 1816. So take your pick and happy hunting. -----Original Message----- From: mabristo-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mabristo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of James Caputo Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 4:33 PM To: mabristo@rootsweb.com Subject: [MABRISTO] Boyle Genealogy Hello to all, I am new to the list and hopefully someone out there may be able to help me trace my ancestors to the New England area of the U.S. The family that I am trying to trace is the Boyle family of Gaspé, Quebec, Canada.
