Hi there Andrea, Here's the Dohertys I have on the list- not too many, actually. Edward, ED130, sheet 14a Elizabeth, ED115, sheet 4b (I have a note on ED 155 that says the writing is small, so be warned!) James A., ED119, sheet 2a Mary, ED 135, sheet 2a Mary J., ED101, sheet 23a Michael, ED152, sheet 6b Thomas, ED126, sheet 18a Ann, ED157 (almshouse), sheet 1b and finally, Dougherty, Mary, ED86, sheet 10a Maybe one of them will provide a clue for you. Where did your Dohertys come from before New Bedford? My husband's family is Doherty, and they came from Providence, Rhode Island, and before that Ireland. I'm still chasing down Doherty relatives of his, so maybe your Dohertys are somehow related. ...ALL the microfilm done by the Mormon Church for the FHL of Massachusetts town records. (Note that some to a lot of stuff is un-filmed.) The Church gives the State copies of everything as its filmed or re-filmed. You'll find some Probate material in this material but its not been done consistently for each county. For Probate & Deeds, especially for the probate file papers, you MUST go to the county offices. The SA also now has almost ALL the 17th & 18th century Province Superior and County Court Records (that is, General Sessions and Common Pleas with their supporting file papers as well as the bound volumes). Some to most of these have indexes. There are also MANY odd-lot items for each county, such as individual JP books that somehow survived. The SA also has the STATE odd year cenuses in the original. This is the series that starts 1855, etc. These can be consulted in the original volume and through microfilm. The 1798 STATE DIRECT TAX CENSUS is also available there on microfilm. Above all, the SA has what's called the Massachusetts Archives volumes. At some point just before 1800, some one had the not to bright idea to take the governmental and judicial files of the 17th century, and a lot of the 18th as well, and RE-ORDER them by so-called TOPIC. It's only saving grace is that there is a seemingly complete index sytem to it all. From my own historical research among these volumes, it is clear that a lot was lost. What remains is wonderful and an underutilized resource by the general genealogist. For instance, its from these volumes that the French & Indian Wars lists of Soldiers & Officers has been compiled, though much of that material may still resie in the MA Adjutant General's office. (Yeah, we still have one.) I'm not going to Columbia Point anytime soon, but when I do I'll try to remember to remind the list and will do look-ups on a limited basis, providing full citation research notes for a SASE. If you want offical copies, do write the SA directly. (Of course, I can be hired!) Good Hunting & Happy Researching. Bob Gerrity Yankee Ancestry P. O. Dear Marcia: How did you order the records? I'm also looking for records of some ancestors that are probably Quakers in the 1700 to 1775 period. The family was from Westport in Bristol County. I would appreciate any leads on where to find those. Hi Lisa , On the surname DOHERTY , I am looking for John , Raymond, and /or Benjamin. Would either of these names be in the 1930 index of names you noted? Your help much appreciated. Thank-You Andrea
To anyone whom it may help, I have just finished going through the 1930 census page by page for the city of New Bedford. I have an index of 323 names of heads of households and "strays" having the surnames listed below. If anyone is interested in any of these names, please e-mail me and I can provide you with an ED and page number. I can't guarantee that this is EVERYBODY with these names (some of the writing was very difficult to read), so it's very possible I may have missed a few people. Still, it may be a start for someone. My list includes ONLY these surnames: ARKWRIGHT BELANGER BESSETTE DOHERTY DOUCET GRINDROD HARRISON HODGKINSON HOLDEN HOWARD MAHON MARSDEN NUTTALL PELCZAR/PELCZARSKI POIRIER POLCHLOPEK SWEENEY TATRO/TETRAULT TURCOTTE VAILLENCOURT WALMSLEY

When you have reached a dead-end in your research, this will help you break through. Applicable to all research, not just Irish research. He will explain how to get around those dead-ends in your genealogical research. Sometimes looking for information on relatives and associates of the person you are interested in will provide that elusive answer. Future Meetings: ** Thurs., June 20, 2002, Wrentham Public Library, "How to Find Genealogical Information on the World Wide Web", Kenneth V. Graves. This will show you (with interactive examples for your own genealogy) how to locate the many resources and get genealogical answers on the web. Refreshments will be available. Non-members will have the option of paying $5 for the meeting or paying $20 for annual membership. Admission is free to members. There will also be opportunity to ask questions and share family information. ** If you want to be removed from our mailing list, please let us know. We are trying to send these notices only to people who have some interest in receiving them. If you are not a member and want to continue to receive future notices, please let Ken Graves know. Hi, I have been told today that Samuel SNAPE 1889 - 1965 had 4 sisters who were all living in Fall River at the time of his death. Their names were: Mrs William (Eliza) TAYLOR, Mrs Robert (Mary) TATE, Mrs Manuel (Beatrice) CAMBRA & Mrs Grace WARNER. Any ideas how I would find any descendants of the above would be appreciated. Regards, Anita. New Zealand.
Dear Karen: According to my records, we would be cousins at the George Brownell and Mary Thurston. It's hard not to connect on Brownell's in Little Compton :-). Your comment on Enos Gifford is interesting. I see two Enos Gifford in LC that could fit the profile for being a JP in 1803. It turns out as well, that LC is only about 40 miles from Westport. So if the position runs in the family...? It would seem logical that there is some connection. I've tried to find a city directory or other means of finding vocations and employment from that area but no luck yet. Thanks for writing. Hi, I live in New Zealand & am making remarkable progress with my SNAPE family thanks to an email friend who lives in Massachusetts but she can only go so far because she doesn't live in the Bristol County. My gt.grandfather Frank SNAPE lived in Fall River & became a naturalized American citizen in 1889, he died 7 Feb, 1911 at 152 Jefferson Street (Ward 1). His occupation was listed as Restaurant Keeper & the information was given by a Thomas MARTIN who was his son-in-law & he lived at 172 Jefferson Street. Frank SNAPE was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery on Feb 9, 1911. Is there any who can look up any obit that may have been published for me or look at the 1910 Census for 152 Jefferson Street & 172 Jefferson Street. Any help would be appreciated, this gt.grandfather of mine committed bigamy twice & I would really like to find any relations that I may have now in the USA from either marriage. Anita.
Hello, My 4-great-grandfather, Michael EAGAN/EGAN/AGAN/AGIN, arrived in NYC on 7/26/1834. By 1840, he was living in Taunton, MA, where he lived for the rest of his life. My two questions: 1. Does anyone have the book which lists which ships arrived on NYC on that day (7/26/1834)? If so, would you please email me? 2. Does anyone else have any ideas as to how long it took him to get from NYC to Taunton? In 1834, how would an Irish immigrant get between those places? Did Irish immigrants often work for a while in NYC? I know that one of my other immigrant grandfathers (John Fitzgerald EDGERTON) WALKED from NYC to Providence (in 1852), where he found work. Later, he moved further east to New Bedford, where he lived for the rest of his life. Where else might I check to try to find him along the way (NYC, CT, RI, MA)? Obviously, the 1830 Census would not help in this case. Any ideas welcome! Thanks. Betty, Middleboro
