I have encountered many instances where a death was reported in the Mercury, yet not recorded in the twon clerk's office. Thus, the obituary is the only reocrd of date of death. However.... Please keep in mind when recording the death date that many newspapers of that era were weekly, rather than daily. Therefore, the safest approach would be to say that "John Doe died prior to (insert date), per (reference), on the grounds thta family members may have been late in reporting the date of death to the newspaper. It is possible that your ancestor did not necessarily die between issues. 3. Looking for information re William STEWART (bc. 1840 Ireland) who settled had in Fall River by 1880 probably as a stonemason. There was at least one son, another William (probably born 1866 Glasgow). If we have the right son William - he may have married a Sarah McKeen in the 1890s. Other possible children of the elder William STEWART were Agnes, Elizabeth, and Mary - all born Glasgow by 1872. William STEWART (the elder) was joined by his sister (Agnes) and her husband Thomas WILSON (a plasterer) about 1882 in Fall River. The WILSONS had at least 6 children: Peter, Alexander, and stepchildren Alexander SMITH, Jane SMITH, Agnes SMITH and James SMITH.

    1. [MABRISTO] Looking for Sheas
    2. Hello researchers, I am trying to locate any information on descendants of my grandmother's siblings. She was Elizabeth Shea Hearn (1882-1924). Her parents were John Shea (1850-1917) and Margaret Murphy Shea (1848-1919) and they lived at 142 Seabury Street. Elizabeth had a sister Kate, who I think married a John Draught. There may have been an Annie, and their were brothers, for sure, named Pat (Paddy) and Mike. Talk about hard names to track in the Fall River area!!! I believe that both men were married. Paddy was a doing some coaching of a boxer (my father, Fred Hearn) in the early 1920s, but beyond that I cannot find anything. I will appreciate any leads. Joan McCarthy

Jim Bullock -----Original Message----- From: Lemelin, Maggie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2002 3:28 PM To: [email protected] Subject: {not a subscriber} Bullock Family of Salem, MA Good Afternoon- I am currently working on a research project as part of my Master's in History program through Salem State College in Salem, MA searching the history of my house on Federal Street in Salem, MA I believe the Bullock family, in it's various incarnations, owned the property from before 1766 to at least 1924. I have learned that the property was purchased in 1766 by a John Bullock, Jr. - and the house passed to Benjamin Bullock in 1780 and Nathaniel and Issac Bullock in 1786 - the house continued on through owners I believe to be related to the Bullock family namely. Lucy Martin - daughter of George Whitfield Martin and Sally Bullock - born in Salem, MA in 1801, lived in the house as early as 1836 and bought the house from Anna (Haskell) Loomis in 1879 - where the Haskells related to the Bullocks? Maria, Deborah and Eliza Grant, daughters of John Grant - a Sarah Bullock, widow, left the property to them (minor children at the time) in 1805 - were these girls her grandchildren by one of her daughters? Sarah Caulfield - likely a cousin, she purchased the house for $1.00 from Lucy Martin in 1887. Charles Richardson - likely another relative - he purchased the house from Sarah in 1924. Upon his death, his daughter, Lucy Martin Richardson sold the property outside of the family. Does anyone have any information about this family that would help me to understand the sucession of homeowners to my property. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated, and if you have any information, I would be glad to share my information on the family homestead. Thanks, Maggie

    3. Dear Patty and List, I believe the list Anita was referring to is the [email protected] list which "is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy or History related to the county of LANCASHIRE, England." The LANCSGEN list is comprised of extremely knowledgeable and extremely helpful people. The only thing to warn you about is that the volume of messages is usually very high. For that reason, some folks find that the digest version works well. That would be [email protected] My ancestors, too, came over from Ashton-under-Lyne (now part of Manchester), England. My first small group came over in 1873 and the second in 1887. Although they settled mainly in the Pawtucket, RI area, the branch of the family from whom I descend did eventually make their way to Fall River and settled there. Without LANCSGEN, MABRISTO and RIGENWEB, I wouldn't know a fraction about my ancestors as I do now. Good luck, Joan S. Ardsley, NY always looking for a ROCKCLIFFE, no matter how it's spelled....
