Good evening, I am new to this list and would dearly like to find information on my MARY HUBBARD who died at the age of 77, 11/18/1906 in Stoneham MA. She was the widow of Otis A. Snow of Easton MA Parents were Joel Hubbard and Mary Whitney of Hartford CT Any information in bridging my stone wall would be greatly appreciated. thank you. Snowy
The Jan., Apr., Jul., Oct. 1933 (vol. 87) and Jan. & Apr. 1934 (vol. 88) issues of New England Historical & Genealogical Record have a genealogy entitled "Some of the Descendants of William Chase of Roxbury and Yarmouth, Mass" compiled by George Walter Chamberlain. I have just begun entering some of the Chase (Chace) family members of Swansea into my data and have referred to the NEHGR article. I have already come across several serious and careless errors in that genealogy, so I wanted to warn others to be cautious in using the data from this genealogy. Also note that Chamberlain's work includes no sources. His work was done when the "Jacobus School", which required rigorous documentation and analysis, was still in its early years. Two of the errors I found follow. NEHGR, vol. 87, pp. 51-52 William^3 (William^2, William^1) Chase m. 1st Hannah Sherman at Portsmouth and m. 2nd Priscilla Perry 6 Dec 1732 at Portsmouth. NEHGR, vol. 87, p. 129 Hezekiah^4 (William^3, William^2, William^1) Chase m. 1st Jael Pierce 24 Jul 1717 and m. 2nd Priscilla Perry 16 Dec 1732 at Swansea. Hezekiah and his father William did not both marry Priscilla Perry. William did marry her 6 Dec 1732 in Swansea, not Portsmouth. The VR states that both were of Swansea and were married by Mr. Joseph Mason, minister of Swansea. ["Vital Records of Swansea, Massachusetts to 1850"; Transcriber, H. L. Peter Rounds; Editors Jane Fletcher Fiske & Margaret F. Costello; New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, 1992; p. 208] Chamberlain gave the date Hezekiah's will was written, 1 Apr. 1738, and when it went to probate, 19 June 1738, but he seems to have ignored the fact that Hezekiah named his wife Jael as executrix. Hezekiah did not marry Priscilla Perry. ["Abstracts of Bristol County, Massachusetts, Probate Records, 1687-1745"; H. L. Peter Rounds, C.G.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.; Baltimore, MD; 1988; p. 272] Another major problem was Chamberlain's identification of Barnabus^5 (Hezekiah^4, William^1-3) Chase's wife Mary Eddy. NEHGR, vol. 87, p. 254 He states "He [Barnabus] married at Swansea, 6 Oct. 1745, Mary Eddy, daughter of Caleb and Elizabeth (Bullock) Eddy", also that Barnabus was b. 1718 and that he & Mary had 10 children from 1746 through 1766. This Mary Eddy was b. 30 Nov 1693 in Swansea. [VR of Swansea, p. 14] (Poor old Mary, who was 25 years older than Barnabus, kept bearing him children until she was 73 years old!!!) Actually, this Mary Eddy m. Joseph Cole 9 Jan 1717 in Swansea. [Swansea VR, p. 182] The correct identification of Mary Eddy, wife of Barnabus Chase, is the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Pierce) Eddy (m. 30 Jul 1724 in Swansea), b. 11 Apr 1725 in Swansea. [Swansea VR, p. 112] and ["The American Genealogist"; Donald Lines Jacobus, editor; Donald Lines Jacobus, New Haven, CT; Reprinted by Picton Press, Camden, ME, 1989; vol. 31, p. 247] The will of Jeremiah Eddy includes mention of his daughter Mary Chase (eldest daughter). ["Abstracts of Bristol County, Massachusetts, Probate Records, 1745-1762, Book 2"; H.L. Peter Rounds, C.G.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1988] This is just another example of why genealogies (especially the older ones), even though printed in reputable publications, must not be accepted at face value. There are two (2) Alexander HUNTER's listed in the book MAss Soldiers and Sailors of the Rev. War, two listed in Bristol Co Censuses of around 1800.. one is from Dartmouth and one is listed in Freetown. Does anyone know if they are the SAME person, two different people but RELATED or possibly not related in any way. Seems such a coincidence, same name, same county, same timeframe and approximately same ages, especially since I can find no other HUNTER families in Bristol Co during this timeframe. Help on this query would be greatly appreciated. Charlie Hunter...... [email protected]
There isn't much in the vital records that helps. From the Dartmouth marriages: "Hunter, Allexander, 'Tancient man,' and Sarah Peckcom [int. Peekcom] of Dartmouth, Nov. 21, 1777. [Alexander and Sarah Peckham, "Bristol County Marriages"]" I believe "Tancient man" meant he was a transient and not from Dartmouth. From the Freetown marriages: "Hunter, Alexander, resident of Freetown & Mary Jucket, 31 Jul 1783" From Freetown births: "Hunter, Daniel, s. Alexander & Mary, 6 Jun 1794." That's all I could find on Alexander. Barbara, At 20 years older, Sylvia may also be Otis' mother, remarried to Mr. Buck at least 2-3 years before 1850 or Otis wouldn't have named his son Archippus! You might look for Snows in 1840 w/ one woman 40-50 and one boy 10. It would seem that your Sylvia was probably a sister of my Otis A. born abt. 1795-1802. It could also be that she and Archippus Buck raised Otis A. of 1827. I have a group picture of young Archippus about 1870 with a large group on a small front porch either in Easton or Mansfield. the Census numbers I have refer to page, etc. which I have never seen. Is there anyone who has access to the 1910 census for Fall River, who might be able to find a listing for my grandparents--Fred A. Fisher and Annie M (Kidd) (Kenyon) Fisher? I do not have their address, but I think they lived quite near the center of the city. I know something about the KIDD family, but nothing about the FISHER family. I think that Fred may have been born in Taunton. Thank you so much for any information you can share with me. Jean [email protected]
