    3. I have some ancestors who lived in Raynham and I would like to find out more about them. Do you have sources, other than the one published vital records book that I am aware of? Specifically, I am searching for information on Charles Robinson (1800-1880ish)and his wife Anne Marie Keith (1801ish-1890's). Charles was an extremely profitable and wealthy business man who owned businesses such as The Old Colony Iron Work of Taunton. Any information that you can help me with would be beneficial. 3. Have you tried contacting the Historical Society in Norton? They may have some old plot plans. I live in nearby Easton and I know that our Historical Society here has plans for Easton. You might also contact the Assesor's office at the town hall and ask them if they could direct you to some where they would have been kept. I would think that if one of the GODFREY men was a mayor as stated, that they would know where his property was located. Good luck in your search. 1. [MABRISTO] Stanley CARTER, b. 1760, deed, to/from GODFREY family, Norton, MA
    2. Hi, Below is a deed from the Bristol County Land Court, Taunton, MA. The buyer, and later the seller, was one of my ancestors, Stanley CARTER (1760-1844). His first wife was Bethiah LEONARD (1764-1804), while his second wife was POLLY KNAP (1781-?). Both women were b. in Raynham. Bethiah d. in Raynham, while Polly d. in Fairhaven, MA. Stanley CARTER has always been a mystery. Although some say he was b. in Raynham, there is no proof. We simply do not know where he came from. He did d. in Raynham in 1844, but we have never found where he was buried. His father-in-law was part of the iron-related LEONARDs, and at c. 1800, he was listed as a "founder." Acc. to these deeds, he lived in Foxborough (MA) in 1795, and Norton (MA) in 1796. Perhaps he did not move at all at that point -- the boundaries may have just changed. If anyone can help with this deed, this would be great! My main question: Does anyone recognize this land (in the deed), i.e., does anyone know where the GODFREYs of Norton, MA, lived? Or where the "ROAD" was? Might it have been (now) Route 140? I live near that area, and would love to find where he once owned this land. I have only one other deed from Stanley, later in life, and it was in Raynham. There are no probate entries in Bristol County for him. Finally, I'll list the names of his children (all b. 1789-1815, all b. in Raynham, MA). If anyone has any info on what happened to his children, please write! If anyone needs dates for the children, I'll be glad to share that info. His children: Sarena CARTER, Alanson CARTER, Menzies CARTER, Stillman CARTER, Diadamia CARTER, Maria CARTER, Leonard CARTER, Philander CARTER, Clarissa CARTER (my ancestor, m. Henry WALDRON of Fall River), Eliza CARTER, William CARTER, Franklin CARTER, Clothier CARTER & Charlot CARTER. I have a feeling the children moved far away, so they could be anywhere. Thank you! Thanks..Denice Tried looking at the index for all of MA, and there was no Edward Souza at all. There also was no Joaquin Santos with a wife Loretta. Since the index gives only head of household, if they weren't head of household in 1910, they won't be in the index. There were just too many Santos and Souza names to check each for the possibility that Joaquin or Edward was listed - plus I wouldn't know how to identify them without ages and other names from the family. Sorry the index had nothing to help. Florence

    2. The following is the obituary as it appeared in the Fall River Herald News on September 25, 1928: Valentine Whalen "Valentine Whalen, a resident of this city nearly all his life, died last night at his home, 184 Union Street, after an illness of several months. Mr. Whalen was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Whalen. He was for a number of years in the employ of the American Printing Company and was held in high regard by his friends in the community. He was a member of Fall River aerie (?) of Eagles. Two sisters, Miss Mary and Miss Johanna Whalen, survive him. The funeral services will be held Friday morning at St. Mary's Cathedral of which parish Mr. Whalen had long been a member." Does any one see a link to their line of Whalen/Phelans from the Fall River/New Bedford/Taunton area? Carol Phelan

I checked the site, and it appears to be pretty well documented. My main interest is Thurber genealogy, and I have recently been researching Mercy Thurber who married John Martin. There seem to be several theories about who she was, but my information is that she was the widow of Richard Thurber. Richard and Mercy Thurber had a son Edward b. 31 Jan 1710 in Swansea. There appears to be no other Mercy Thurber (other than the widow of Richard) who could have been the one who married John Martin. I was hoping to find something more solid to substantiate this. Some sites claim that Richard Thurber married Mercy Stafford b. 1668. This is not likely, since Richard was not b. until 1681, so she would have been 13 years older than he was.. And if she married 2nd John Martin and was the mother of Benjamin Martin b. 1734, then she would have given birth at age 66! There are other reasons to eliminate her as possible spouse of Richard. I am hoping to find something that verifies that John Martin's 2nd wife was the widow of Richard Thurber. I am also curious about who raised Edward. There seems to be no mention of John Martin's wife Mercy Thurber having a child by an earlier marriage. Thanks for pointing me to that site - it did confirm some of what I had. I had the Nov 1757 date for John's death, but have read there may be a Dec 1758 or even Sep 1758 date on his gravestone. Maybe someone from Swansea area has seen the stone and knows the answer. 2. Hi Florence: There is a privately published genealogy, "The Martin-Pridmore Family Record" that may have leads. Use with caution; sources not cited. I'm from John Martin's first wife, Mercy/Marcy Hayward, dau. William Hayward & Sarah Butterworth. Melissa Florence Gargaro wrote: > I am looking for information on John Martin and wife Marcy/Mercy. 3. I am looking for information on John Martin and wife Marcy/Mercy. They are buried in North Swansea Cemetery. I have Marcy's death as 1760. I am looking for her age at death and any additional information on both of them I believe her to be Mercy, widow of Richard Thurber, who married John Martin in Rehoboth (intention dated 4 April 1713). Mercy's surname remains unknown, but it is likely she was a granddaughter of Samuel Stafford and Mercy Westcott. Florence
