    1. Re: [MABERKSH] Sheffield - CT / MA problem
    2. Jim, It was quite likely that people who lived near the border claimed or were assigned to either or both provinces during the 1750-60. My ancestor, Eleazer Barrett, lived just south of Sheffield in Cornwall and Salisbury, Litchfield County, CT between 1741-1760. He served in the French and Indian War in 1757 in a Connecticut Regiment and 1759 in a Berkshire County Massachusetts Regiment. I believe he lived in Salisbury, Connecticut while he served in the Berkshire County Regiment. During 1760-61 he, and his brothers, Ebenezer and Bartholomew Barrett moved into the town Sheffield. Sheffield was never a part of Connecticut. My ancestors also relocated to the town of Great Barrington about 1761. ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Jim Almquist <jim_almquist@yahoo.com> To: MABERKSH@rootsweb.com Subject: [MABERKSH] Sheffield - CT / MA problem Date: Sun, 5 Apr 2009 08:04:55 -0700 (PDT) I am tracing the PIER family.  A short narrative of the history of the Pier family, written many years ago states that the seven sons of Thomas PIER and Rachel TREMAINE "were all born in either Sheffield, Connecticut or, later, in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts where the family moved." I am a bit confused about the accuracy of this statement as to the location of Sheffield - whether it is/was in CT or has it always been in MA? The seven sons were born during the period 1752 - 1767. This "source" has been cited so many times by other researchers that it would seem that there must be some "validity" to Sheffield being located in Connecticut. Can anyone shed any light on this? thanks, Jim ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MABERKSH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ____________________________________________________________ Purify your water with professional water treatment. 3. Thank you - kinda just as I was "sorta thinkin". The erroneous reference to Sheffield, Connecticut has just been repeated so many times that it has taken on a life of its own. One person went so far as to refer to Sheffield, CT with the p.s. that it is Now Sheffield, MA. I have found another person stating "According to Sheffield, CT, Vital Statistics he was married December 12,1751, to Rachel, Tremaine,....." I have found on the Berkshire County Gen-Web site, a transcription of those marriage records, but correctly identified as Sheffield, Massachusetts.
