He was such a kind, generous, loving and good man with a heart as big as an ocean. I think about him often and all I have are wonderful memories, lessons I learned from him, and how I wish he were still with us today. He lived long enough to see the birth of my 2 daughters but how I wished he had lived long enough to also see the birth of my son and long enough for all 3 of them to know him and remember him the way I do. I think how honored I would have been to have him watching my son win a Dizzy Dean World Series this summer (he loved baseball). I can close my eyes and still see him, smell him, hear him, and touch him. He embodied what it meant to be an American, such a sense of patriotism and love for his country. He did not worry about material things, would rarely even buy a new piece of clothing, yet would take the time and spend the money to take his 7 grandchildren to the beach for a week or g! ive money to his ex-daughter in laws to help them out. He loved everyone equally (except perhaps for my grandmother who i know he loved just a little bit extra), showed no favorites, and truly demonstrated the meaning of family. So many of those values have gone by the wayside in our country so its nice to be able to think back to big family dinners where 4 to 5 generations came together in one place, broke bread, and enjoyed the fellowship of family. Grandpa, I just want you to know I often think of you, I miss you, and I love you and hope I can be something close to the man you were for our family!
