    3. In order to clarify things, I am researching VAN GELDER/GILDER, WINCHELL and LIVINGSTON in Berkshire County. My ancestor Jan Van Gelder/ John Van Gilder was a Mohican man who married a German Palatine woman named Anna Maria Koerner or Mary Karner and lived in the Town of Egremont in what became called Guilder Hollow along with his brothers-in-law Andrew and Ludwig/Lodowick Karner. His daughter Catalyntje/Catherine married Hezekiah Winchell, Sr. His daughter Magdalena married Peletiah Winchell. From court testimony the Van Gilders and the Winchells lived near each other as the children grew up. I have been researching this family for the past six years. A friend researching in the Stockbridge Library recently found a deed pertaining to John and Mary's son Matthew. The Wappinger sachem Daniel Nimham and two Indian women gave land to Matthew in 1757. The land lay west of Sheffield and one of the boundary markers was Black Rock. I add Livingston because Catherine and Hezekiah's grandson George Winchell married Sarah Livingston, the daughter of Daniel Livingston and Rachel Boice. Daniel is not one of the rich Livingstons. They are well documented. I haven't been able to find him anywhere yet. I grew up with the knowledge that there was a group of mixed race people named Livingston living in southern Columbia County.
