    2. Mine was something like that. For starters they said they were never legally married because she had married someone else. The agent sent letters to every nearby county looking for the person they said she married with no luck-but answers from men who said it wasn't them. Then in the middle of fighting for the pension she married a man who thought his wife was dead because she was sick when he left her-during the civil war. So there were letters from her saying "here I am!" I was amazed at the amount of detail in that time period. I don't think she ever got her pension. Great reading. Things I never would have found out because my Grandmother --it was her in-law would never talk about her. To add--there wasn't a lot of info in the military file. But it was only $12 as I recall. He was only in the war about a year and then they said he deserted. They eventually found him in a hospital at Ft Monroe Va. as he was ill with dysentery. He never really got over it.
