Cornelia: Thank you for sharing this great information with the list! Unfortunately, the otherwise helpful staff at the North Registry of Deeds Office in Adams did not make me aware of these earlier land records during my all-too-brief visit in August. Between working more than full-time, living in a rural area and raising four kids, I don't know when I'll ever find time to the nearest Family History Center. If there is some kind soul who would be willing to check these records for the surnames of DYER and MINER, especially in the Town of Windsor, please let me know. Any additions or corrections to my recently updated documents on these families will be greatly appreciated: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/dyer.pdf http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/miner.pdf Thanks for any help! I recently discovered these have been filmed and are available through LDS, the Mormon Church. In 1920-1921, the county registry of deeds offices compiled the earliest land records for each of the 3 registry districts. A 10-page introduction describes the first land grants and land sales in western Massachusetts for all of present-day Berkshire County, including areas once in Hampden County or in other states (NY, VT or CT). This summary precedes each of the separate district records; then records for each town are listed. The names and locations of these first owners - called (first) proprietors - are traced from the 1730's through 1788 when the county registry system was established. These fist owners had no deeds, and these early transactions (grants, sales, property subdivisions, etc) for the most part do not show in the registry grantor & grantee indexes of land transfers. These colonial records include lists of the proprietors, the acreage and location of each plot, plot plans and notes of subsequent proprietor meetings and later subdivisions and updated plot maps. The degree of detail does vary from town to town. There are every name indexes. The proprietor records have a wealth of both historical and genealogical information. I copied the records from the original books in the Southern District. They are wonderful. The maps are fabulous, as the deeds refer to lot numbers, and the maps show all the lot numbers in the Soujth 11,000 acres. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. To make a long story short (ha!) my husband lived at Windigo for a couple of years during the 1980s. I spent some time there. During one visit I did see (don't laugh)some "ghosts...an old man in overalls and a young girl in a dress out of the corner of my eyes when I entered the living room. One of my sons later described the same siting elsewhere in the house. It's a very strange place...maybe even mystical because you or I did anyway, feel a very strong connection to the place. I love reading the stories about it. As far as I know the buildings have not been torn down yet. There is asbestos in the house making it unsafe for anyone to live in and probably at this point too much damage to repair due to years of neglect. Too bad. Hi again, In my other posting this morning the Blackhawk War was mentioned. I just looked it up and it was a war with "Black Hawk," a war Chief in the area of the then "Michigan Territory" and "Indiana Territory." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hawk_War http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu/blackhawk/ And, the article mentioned that many people headed out in that direction after the War of 1812: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_1812 Black Hawk's War was in 1832. See above article. I don't know if I can find a definition of the term, Captain of the Volunteers" on-line. But, it seems to be a term in many countries. Just an FYI for you. Be happy, safely, this weekend ! Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Hello, I've been thinking about my LEWIS ancestors in England this morning. So far, I have Richard LEWIS, b1803 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, and then he had 7 children in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, from 1825 to 1845. This family seems to have stayed in Liverpool, and one descendant who lived more towards 1900, was said to have been a "Captain of the Volunteers." I had heard that term in regards to "New England" but not in regards to "old" England. So, I just looked it up. Turns out many web sites mention men who were Captain of the Volunteers. But, this web site has a very good report on a Thomas COVELL from West Stockbridge, MA, who around Age 20 left for Illinois. The story offers a lot of history about the 1800 to 1850 time when people were heading to the Chicago area and what happened after they got there. http://www.hillsidelibrary.org/history%20web/chapter1a.html (I love it when I go to look up something on the Internet - and find something else of interest !) Also, my early-morning brain thought that Stockbridge might be near Worcester. I looked it up and discovered it's in Berkshire County. http://www.weststockbridgetown.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Stockbridge,_Massachusetts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockbridge,_Massachusetts Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Perhaps I was thinking of Northbridge and Southbridge, which are near Worcester. P.S.2 My gr-grandfather, "Stanley" LEWIS, was born in Liverpool, England, in 1859, and became a "British Home Child," arriving in Nova Scotia at Age 14. He married another "Home Child" there in 1879 and migrated to MA in 1881. They raised .13. children in Stoneham. Both Stanley and Mary (CORKILL) left many uncles, aunts, and cousins in Liverpool when they left. And, I have no way of knowing whether they remained in contact with them. The cousins were probably still in Liverpool up to the 1920's. (Don't forget the brand-new List: New-England-Railroads, which could use some new subscribers.)
