He may have been born in New Ashford or Adams. Any information on the Fish's of that area at that time would be appreciated. I know there was a Jonathan Fish born in 1784 that lived in that area and was probably related but I cannot confirm it. I am trying to prove that there was a Jonathan Fish born in 1795 near New Ashford. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His married his first wife Maria Smith, 1835, in Berkshire Co and Maria died 1837 in Berkshire County. Censuses 1850-1880 all show Hubbard's birth state as CT. After researching, at length, online and not being able to find any clue as who Hubbard's parents were, I am grasping at straws and hoping his given name "Hubbard" is a clue to possibility that his mother's surname might have been Hubbard. There were many Hubbard and Crofoot families in Berkshire County in those days. Any knowledge, or thoughts, on a Crofoot that married a Hubbard that might solve my puzzle will be greatly appreciated. I feel sure Hubbard was, or probably, born in CT beings four later Censuses state CT. That could muddy the water a little. Or, if I'm lucky, be the deciding factor. Most of the Irish coming then were poorly educated and the clerks were unfamiliar with the Irish accents. The only entry listed in the index that could be a match is the one for John Henry McArty. With the work I've done on the database and my own Irish research, that rendering of McCarty is not a surprise. The daughters may not have been registered with the civil authorities. The Irish Catholics were very suspicious of civil authorites. They didn't start registering Catholic births in Ireland until 1864 and the Catholics brought that attitude with them to America. I might suggest you request the baptismal papers for John Henry and see which church he was baptised in. The nearest current Catholic Church is Saint Agnes in Dalton. I might suggest you ask there. They should know where their and, if there was a CC in Windsor, where those church records are located. ST. They had a daughter born while living there and I would like to know what church she may have been baptized in as the family was catholic. I would like to learn where they were from in Ireland and was hoping that information might be in church records. I've tried with the other children but have had no success. They came in 1849 from Ireland. Had two children in Massachusetts and then moved to Michigan. On the census the surname is listed as Carty. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. You may already have this information, but he shows up in the 1910 census as Leonard A Race, born about 1903, living with his parents and siblings in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. Hillsdale sits right about on the border with Massachusetts and it's understandable that he's reported in various places as having been born in both NY and MA. By the 1920 census William, Blanche, Leonard and family show up in Great Barrington. By 1930 brother George A Race shows up in Great Barrington, married. For some reason, I can't find either Leonard or William Race in 1930, however. The best route to get birth and marriage information for the family is to contact the town clerk in Great Barrington directly. Actually, even when I was at camp there in the 60's there were (not ghostly) men in overalls who were there occasionally, local people working, visitors. It is definitely a place with some kind of strong -- whatever, vibration, karma, spirituality--stays with us. waking and in dreams!
