None of the books known as "The Vital Records" or the "tan series" that I own have a copy right notice in them. All were printed in the 1940 - 42 time frame by different printers. One "new" version printed by Picton Press (1997) has a Copy Right notice, how they do this is unknown. ......john ----- Original Message ----- From: <SOARSA@aol.com> To: <MABERKSH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2001 12:42 AM Subject: Where's Vikki??? > > Vikki, the site for Berkshire Co., is not recognized for her email. Vikki, the site for Berkshire Co., is not recognized for her email. Maybe someone can locate her and forward the following email. Hi Vikki: In order to keep from sounding as inept as your usual queries, I shall try to refrain. I hope I don't. I wholly understand your specs over what I refer to as "idiot innocent queries" on "my gramma Smith..." I also get such queries after being quite specific with regard to an Index of Names I posted from my gg grandpa's 1842 Journal in Ohio. I can't believe folks who think I could possibly somehow "know" about their people in Alabama, or whatever without a year, name or anything else. Oh well, I guess it is a shout to the universe and somehow someone does answer in spite of the chaos. It does happen so I keep the faith. Without further griping, I want to ask you this: Your site says there's a copyright issue over posting ... > "The series of "Vital Records to 1850" available here are now in the public > domain. There are only an additional two or three of these books available > for Berkshire County, none of which can be reproduced due to copyright law. > " > My question is this: What or how can copyright law be or supercede a public > record? I have been doing research on the Noble, Fallon and Lally families in Berkshire County for quite a while now, but I just found out that some members of another one of my lines lived there also. Does anyone have any Booth's in the Berkshire county area? Bill Coley Orange, CT
My very special DAVID R O S S married Zerviah SPRAGUE in 1801 in Vermont, right accross the border from North Adams. Are there any other ROSS researchers with kin in Bennington VT or Berkshire County (Florida, MA, Adams or North Adams) during the 1780's to 1800's? Looked for a while like David came from Samuel Junior who ended up moving to New York and who was a Revolutionary War Vet. But this info is not easy to prove. Anyone having access to the "Book of ROSS" if you see anything on the Rosses in that area, please see if you find a David Ross born about 1776. I think this is the Massachusetts--to Rhode Island (Glocester)-- to Connecticut (West Killingly) -- to the Berkshire Hills area either in Berkshire MA or Bennington VT bunch. Thanks a lot Peter
If anyone has a copy of the History of Berkshire Co., by Charles Taylor, I need a lookup in that book to see if the author gave any information about his family. Thank you. Francee
For Dan Fetters: HAVENS I have several Havenses in the History of Royalton, Vt, by Evelyn Lovejoy. Info includes Robert Havens, his sons and dtrs, and to a limited extent, their descendants. Don't see any name like Brazilla or variation, but I have found myself that sometimes what seems like unrelated info can lead you to more sources for whatever you're hunting. If you think what I have may help, reply and I'll send it on. Robt Havens was an early settler here, was present during the Indian raid on Royalton, in which his son Joseph was taken prisoner.
Looking for any information of the Havens family who were in the NW MASS. Brazilla or Brazillia (probably a middle name) was married to Anna or Amy who may be a Watson 29 SEP 1808 in Bennington County, VT He was a cordwainer. Some of the children came to Michigan and Lapeer County. Hi everyone - Last week I thought I had found my Margaret's parents - but now I don't think so. I was sent some CHAPIN genealogy- it said she was the d/o Reuben BEAMAN and his wife Miriam - but I believe that is not correct - because Reuben was born 1842 and Margaret born 1756- I doubt that Reuben had a child at 14- Is there anyone that could help me out in New Marlboro by looking in the records to see if her parents are listed. She was born there 15 March 1756 - she married there 22 Apr 1779 TO Darius 6) CHAPIN - She lived there for 23 years before her marriage and then in 1780 they moved to New York- Her first child, a daughter, Tamer was born in New Marlboro on 9 Nov 1779- their next child was born 1780 at Granville, Washington, New York- where the rest of their children were born- I sure do appreciate any help you can give to me - Thank you Wilma Fleming Haynes in Oregon gencon@harborside.com

I'm new to this list and I haven't seen any activity since I joined. I hope someone is out there. Does anyone have any information about a school in Pittsfield called Chickering's Commercial College? I believe it was in existence, at least in the 1880's or 1890's. Does it still exists, perhaps under a new name? If not, would anyone know where the old records may be? I believe my gggrandfather, George J. Amidon, was a professor of penmanship at this school during the late 1800's. Any help will be appreciated. Barbara Shannon
Hello all- I wonder if any one might be a ble to help... I was sent a few pages from a directory form the Adams, MA area but not sure of the year. Would have asked the sender but unavailable at present! It is most likely mid-1800s from the names I have in it. . The first page starts with Adams in big letters about half way down and the first entries are Adams. Bros. & Co. then Adams, Freeman.. if anyone could help, I'd appreciate it... Hello, I am new to this list and I am looking for information on my ggggrandfather John Ellis HOWARD, born abt. 1767 in Rhode Island, parents unknown. John married Lydia KING, born abt. 1769 in Rhode Island, parents unknown. John and Lydia moved to Berkshire, Co. Mass. and settled there until 1804. Around 1804 John and Lydia moved to Chautauqua Co. N.Y. where he became quite a business man. They built log houses and settled around Silver Creek. John eventually had the spirit of discovery and adventure and wandered westward into Michigan. 1831 finds John, Lydia and their seven children settled and well established in Portage, Kalamazoo Co. MI. I do have information and documents on my ancestors living in NY and MI. but not in Mass. or Rhode Island. I will be willing to share my information with anyone who may have a link to my Howard and King lineage. Thanking you in advance. Gloria
Could SKS who has access to the VR book for Adams or North Adams check for a birth record for Ellen A. SWEENY (or SWEENEY) b. 1844-46 to William and Mary Sweeny. Thanks very much. Gerry Hammond North Easton, Mass.

I know that the Berkshire Atheneum is a wonderful place for genealogical research. But are there any smaller libraries or history centers open for public research in the Great Barrington, West Stockbridge, Egremont, even Hillsdale, NY area that would have town and family histories, local censuses, etc. that the Atheneum might not have? If so, could someone please post an E-mail address or phone number for any one of them. I'd like to come to the area to more directly research the Burzee, Brizzee, Bresee lines. Thank you, Phyllis
Hi I'M new to this list . I think My ggrandfather and Mother lived in Pittsfield in 1860 thought some of the following info might be familiar to another Feeley. My name is William J. Feeley. I am originally from Albany, NY but for the past 25 years have been living in Mi.. I am currently doing a genealogy of "my " Feeley family. The following is information that I have: I was born in Albany, NY. My parents were Leo Thomas Feeley born 07/28/1911 ,Albany,NYdied 03/16/1999 Daytona Fla.; Catherine Clark Feeley born 02/24/1913 Albany NY died 07/23/1981, Harvey, Ill. They had other children: Leo, Marilyn Feeley McGarry & Edward. Leo Thomas Feeley's parents were: William J. Feeley born 09/06/1869 Albany NY died 07/15/1918 Albany NY; Mary Elizabeth McEvoy Feeley born 1874 Albany NY died 12/06/1959 Albany NY. They also had other children: Marguerite Feeley Soraghan born 10/26/1905, Paul born 1907, Anna Feeley Stauch , Helen Feeley Purdy, Julia Feeley Hughes . William J. Feeley's parents were: John B. Feeley born approx. 1840. died 11/14/1883 Albany NY; Julia Kelly Feeley born Quebec Canada. The 1860 census index shows a John & Julia In Pittsfield, Ma. Berkshire Co.>I'm not sure if this is mine but it would fit . They had other children: John , Mary Agnes Feeley Laffan born approx. 1874 died 02/09/1910 , Rochester NY , Maim Feeley Dormady, Anna E. Feeley born approx. 1876 died 12/19/1891, Coeymans Junction NY. John B. Feeley's parents were William Feeley and Mary ? Feeley possibly from County Sligo Ireland. They had other children but who unknown. Family history has it that the Feeleys came to the US Via Canada. This may be supported by Julia Kelly being from Quebec. Who came to the US I do not know other the John B. Feeley. Family history also says that some of the Feeleys lived in Brooklyn NY possibly on Carroll St.. and attended St.. Paul's Rc Church. The 1890 Brooklyn city directory showed Edward Feeley, a plumber, at 83 Carroll St.. This is .5 miles from St. Paul's on Congress St.. This may be supported by Paul Feeley SR saying that prior to he's fathers,William J Feeley, death in 1918 William went to NY to stay with relatives and "get the sea air". The Carroll address is not to far from the river/Atlantic ocean.
This may be the time for the AOL users to leave AOL and get a more functional ISP. Most communities have a decent local internet service provider that will charge less than AOL and provide better service, including technical support when you need it. If AOL continues to cause problems when sending gedcom and graphics formats, and now a lot of hassle with email, why continue with it. If it is AOL Messenger you want to use, it can be used with almost any internet service provider. Our local computer experts constantly urge people to leave AOL for something better. I am sending this to several mail lists which I am on to help those who have AOL 6.0 and are getting messages bounced by Rootsweb. I've been frustrated since Rootsweb's servers were upgraded a few weeks ago and have been unable to post on a mail list (occasionally one would get through). Hope this helps all of us frustrated AOL members. A copy of what I received is below my name. Ruth Cherecwich Hi, Ruth. The message you posted to the HelpDesk does contain some HTML coding; this is a common problem with AOL 6.0. We've had AOL members give us two approaches which might work for you: AOL 6 -- plain text 1) Compose your email as normal in AOL 6. 2) Right click the text scroll box. 3) Select Select All. 4) Right click text again and select text Normal. 5) Send the email. And: AOL says that 6.0 users with plain-text problems should use the following alternatives to send plain text only: 1. When authoring mail in AOL 6.0 remove all formatting from the message body and send the message in the AOL 6.0 default of Arial, size 10 - do not include any bold, italics, underline, colors, or other styles. 2. Use AOL Mail on the Web (at http://www.aol.com) to send mail - AOL Mail on the Web sends mail as plain text only. We've also seen some problems with 6.0 users where cutting and pasting has resulted in backgrounds unknowingly being picked up and resulting in total gibberish. To counter this problem, you can copy to Notepad, save as text, and then copy/paste from Notepad.
