    3. In order to clarify things, I am researching VAN GELDER/GILDER, WINCHELL and LIVINGSTON in Berkshire County. My ancestor Jan Van Gelder/ John Van Gilder was a Mohican man who married a German Palatine woman named Anna Maria Koerner or Mary Karner and lived in the Town of Egremont in what became called Guilder Hollow along with his brothers-in-law Andrew and Ludwig/Lodowick Karner. His daughter Catalyntje/Catherine married Hezekiah Winchell, Sr. His daughter Magdalena married Peletiah Winchell. From court testimony the Van Gilders and the Winchells lived near each other as the children grew up. I have been researching this family for the past six years. A friend researching in the Stockbridge Library recently found a deed pertaining to John and Mary's son Matthew. The Wappinger sachem Daniel Nimham and two Indian women gave land to Matthew in 1757. The land lay west of Sheffield and one of the boundary markers was Black Rock. I add Livingston because Catherine and Hezekiah's grandson George Winchell married Sarah Livingston, the daughter of Daniel Livingston and Rachel Boice. Daniel is not one of the rich Livingstons. They are well documented. I haven't been able to find him anywhere yet. I grew up with the knowledge that there was a group of mixed race people named Livingston living in southern Columbia County. 3. Ok. I'm talking about the town that is directly south of the Town of Egremont. I believe that would then be the Town of Mount Washington. I guess I'm still getting the two mixed up. 3. I think you're thinking of Mt. Washington. The town of Washington doesn't border NY state but is a few towns east of the border in eastern Berkshire County. 3. The town of Washington is near Lee, Ma., north of Becket; the town of Mt. Washington is in south county near the New York state border. It was the latter town that was part of the land dispute. Debra Winchell wrote: > I just looked at the records for the Town of Washington on the Berkshire > County usgenweb page. 3. I just looked at the records for the Town of Washington on the Berkshire County usgenweb page. They seem to start late in the 1700s. Weren't there people living here before then? I know it was part of the land disputed by New York State at the behest of Robert Livingston and Massachusetts and the border wars included people living on the land in dispute. If there were people living here before the earliest dates officially recorded, where would I look for the vital records? Also, does anyone know who the Dutch families were who were supposed to have been living there when the first English people came? Thank you very much. Debbie Winchell

    3. Hi Folks, I just put some new Census Transcriptions into the USGenWeb Massachusetts Archives for Berkshire County - As the Mass State Archives File Manager I would like to appeal to you to send me more files to be added to the GenWeb Archives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ma/mafiles.htm If you have not already searched the archives you will find a wealth of information there. It is up to us to improve this resource for all researchers. Search: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm If anyone would like to help manage this project we can always use more archives county coordinators. Just let me know and I can get you into the system. A little html and ftp experience with web sites is helpful. Thanks, Ray Sears LRSears@CapeCod.net

    1. SMITH in Lanesborough
    2. Susan
    3. Hi, Everybody... No laughing now.. I'm chasing a SMITH family.... <g>...one of millions! One target of that search is a Colonel Jonathan SMITH, who served in the Revolutionary War. He was born in CT in 1740 and later settled in Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA. Family papers indicate that his body was interred in a cemetery there, but I have no clue what the name of that cemetery would be. According to an old family letter, following the Rev. War this Col. Smith was chosen to represent Lanesborough in the state general assembly. Also.. he was supposedly buried in a Lanesborough cemetery. Does anybody have access to cem. records that might contain that information? If so, a look-up would be so appreciated! His wife's name was Esther ?? and they had a number of children: David, Isaac, Sarah, Jacob, Jonathan, Esther, Anna, and Rachel. Does anybody recognize this family? 'Tis a long shot, I know... <g> Thanks. Warm regards, Susan

    1. Pittsfield Directory 1870 request
    2. I too am very much interested in the 1870 Pittsfield Directory to see if a Martin McMahon is listed. My great-grandfather was born in Ireland in 1848 and came to Pittsfield and worked in one of the woolen mills or textile mills there. My grandfather Owen McMahon was born in Pittsfield approximately 1873. Any help would be appreciated as I live in California and hard to get to these places right now and hitting brick walls. Does anyone know if Massachusetts vital records would have birth certificates available for 1873 or were they kept during this time. Thank you Katherine Bailey (McMahon, McDonald, Pine or Pyne, Morris)

    3. Hello, Vikki: My FORD family is from Pittsfield (arrived there sometime between 1851 and 1855). If someone could get copies of the Directories to me, I would be willing to do the indices. Cheers, Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vikki Gray" <magenweb@hotmail.com> To: <MABERKSH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 15, 2001 9:59 AM Subject: Pittsfield Directory Hi everyone. I'm wondering if the 1850 or 1870 Pittsfield Directory could be indexed by someone? It is in the public domain now and if there is someone who has access to it who would want to volunteer for this project - I would be glad to post it on the Berkshire County GenWeb site. The volunteer would get credit on the site and lots of "good karma" tokens. I don't know how big the book is so maybe I'm asking too much?
