    1. Sultaire or Sulter Surnames
    2. Mary Cecil
    3. Hello! I am currently researching my granfather's family. His last name is Sultaire, but orginally was Sulter. Family comes from the Alsace area of France, and first came the Berkshire County region, then later to Litchfield County, CT. There are still Sultaires in the greater Pittsfield area--but my grandfather lost touch with them back in the early 1980s. Here is a basic family sketch. I do have a lot of information about these folks--but still missing pieces of the puzzle. Joseph Sulter born about 1808 in France. Died Abt 1914 in Otis, Berkshire County, Mass. Married (1)Malina Merou in france. Child: Jospeh Sulter/Sultaire born 1832 in Belfort, France. Died July 14, 1914 in Torrington, Litchfield County, CT. Wife may have been Melanie Duplain(e) Joseph Sr, then married Marie Virginia Voirrin. Children of Joseph and Marie Sulter that are known are: A) Pierre Gustave Adophe Sulter/Sultaire born June 8, 1838 in St. Anne, Canton De Vosges, France. Married Jospehine Catherin Schotzli on Jan 8, 1865 in Kerlinfinger, Solothurn, Switzeland. Family emigrated to Berkshire area about 1866 and settled in Richmond and then Pittsfield. May have also gone by the name Adolphus. Children: Adolphe F, Augustus Xavier, Sophie Josephine, Mary Louise, Anna Eloise, John Joseph, Frank, and Katherine Adele. Pierre died Feb. 23, 1930 in Pittsfield. B) Francois-Frederic Suter/Sultaire born Sept 6, 1842 in France. Married Elise Elizabetha Philemone Duplain on October 15, 1866 in France or Germany. Family emigrated to Berkshire area around 1880's.Worked at Peck's Mill. Refered to as Frederick in many documents. Children: Frederick, Josephine, Louis Bernard, **Henri-Joseph (see below), Leon Louis, and Sophie Louise. Francios-Frederick died Feb 22, 1895 in Pittsfield. He might have died from injuried due to a horse and cart accident--have never been able to find evidence of this. ***Henri-Joseph Sultaire was born March 3, 1876, possible in France or Swizterland. Married Margaret Anne Richardson June 26, 1907 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Torrington, CT. Died 1943 in Torrington. Only child was my grandfather: Joseph Henry Sultaire, born April 12, 1908 in Torrington, CT. He married Dorothy Jamieson and had 6 children. He died in Winsted, CT on September 17, 1985. I have made some connections with other decendents of Pierre and Francios-Frederick, but I know there must be more out there. We have a large family that would love to meet our Pittsfield relatives. Thank you! MaryEllen ===== Rearching the: Beecher, Bodkin, Canfield, Cummings, Duplain/Duplaine, Falve, Good(e), Jamieson, Leary, Longergan, Maher/Meagher, McCormick, Merou, O'Connor, Parkin, Richardson, Scaife, Shanahan, Sulter, Sultaire, and Voirin families. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. SMITH-WHEELER>CT,MA,VT<1745-1804
    2. MARGAREt DAVIS
    3. Hi Listers, It has been some time since I posted to the list. I have some really good data now that proves the father of my John SMITH, was Jehiel SMITH. But as usual, it leaves me with one more quandry. I hope some one can add something to the questions at the end of this post. SMITH, Jehiel(5), Daniel(4), John(3) John(2), John(1), bapt. 3 June 1745 in Fairfield, CT, m. 24 Nov 1768 Pene DAVIS. Known children John(6), David, Ephraim Wheeler, Enos and George. Sons-in-law, Isaac ASSELTINE/ and Joseph HIND. John SMITH(6), b. 1769 in NY d. Mar. 1852 m. 1st Mindwell WADAMS 2nd Sophia (CHAPMAN) CROCKER (no children by second marriage) Children of John and Mindwell, all born in Hancock, Berkshire Co. Mass. William Sylvester Enos David Jehiel is known to have purchased property in Hancock in 1787, which he sold to his son John, in 1795. He was residing in Fairfield, VT at least from 1791 to 1795. He removed to Quebec and he died in Stanbridge, Missiquoi Co. Quebec in early 1804.. Question? Documents filed and witnessed in the Court of Kings, Montreal, indicate that Jehiel's wife was Elizabeth WHEELER. She claims the named children as her own----referring to John Smith, as "my son". Sooooo, what happened to Pene DAVIS? That bit of info comes from "Families of Old Fairfield, Conn" by D. L. Jacobus-----could Jacobus be in error? If Pene was John's mother and died perhaps in childbirth, would Elizabeth regard him as HER son? Any ideas would be most welcome. Thank you, Margaret in NV

    1. Waltham Gold Watch
    2. Brian Jones
    3. Hi everyone, I am in possession of a Waltham Gold Watch which was presented to my gtgrandfather Edwin Jones (1846-1917) by the Ffestiniog Railway Company in about 1915. The production number for the watch is 8117323, therefore according to The Waltham Company Production Dates this watch was produced in 1897. The name on the movement is P J BARTLETT, whether he is the maker, wholesaler or retailer I don't know. Perhaps this person is part of a family that someone on the list is researching? What I would like is to trace the exportation and paper trail of this watch from Massachusetts to North Wales. Over the last few years I have tried the obvious places like the Waltham schools, libraries etc., and the Ffestiniog Railway Museum at http://www.ffestiniograilway.org.uk/ . I am in contact with one of the volunteer curators of this museum and he has had no luck at that end. Eventually my aim is to donate this watch to the Ffestniog Railway Museum, but before I do I would like to add some more provenance, for myself as well as the museum. I would appreciate any help or ideas in this quest. TIA Brian

    1. Berkshire Co. family history
    2. Sally and Don Chirlin
    3. I am interested in learning about the family and background of E. B. and Louisa Gore Georgia. They lived in the town of Florida and had five children there. Louisa Gore was born in the town of Florida as well as her children. Elijah B. Georgia was b. 1838 probably NY but not known. He died in 1917 in NY, Newfield, Tompkins Co. area and is buried in town of Cayuta, Schuyler Co., NY cemetery. He married Louisa Gore 2 June 1867. Louisa and all of their 5 children were born in Florida, MA, and at some time came to New York State, the Finger Lakes area, town of Newfield perhaps. He appears in the NY 1892 census record with a Cornelia who may be a second wife and Linne, his daughter no doubt. 1. Re: MABERKSH-D Digest V01 #98
    2. Spring inquiry: According to a history of Tyringham, Mass., there was an Ebenezar Spring in Tyringham in the late 1700s - Tyringham abuts Otis. He is mentioned on pages 25 and 26 in connection with the identification of school districts about 1773. It seems possible that there may be a relationship.

    3. Hi List, Does anyone have connections with DARIUS SPRING born Mar 22, 1792 at Otis, Berkshire County, MA died Sep 17, 1814 at Fort Erie during the War of 1812. It is said that he was killed and scalped by Indians. He had a brother AMOS SPRING JR (1779-1850), who served alongside him during this War. It is also said that both brothers were serving with Lt. Norton E. Davis' company of Col. Davies Regiment, New York Militia. Is there anyway to confirm these statements? 1. Re: MABERKSH-D Digest V01 #95 Vanderhook-Beckwith
    2. I hope the sender gets this. Is the nature of your request based on the murder by Beckwith of his partner? I have several newspaper articles that I have seemed to have missed placed but I should be able to find them. From what I understand they found gold in the mountains that the Berkshire Spur (connection between NY thruway to the Mass Thruway) From what I was told Beckwith murdered his partner to keep the where abouts of the gold mine quiet. Email me direct @ krsykes@aol.com with your email address and I will send you what info I have if this is what you are referring to. I am a decedent of Beckwith.

    3. Greetings listers! I am currently researching a great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hines, who was born in North Adams, MA, in 1862. Next month I will be spending one day in Berkshire Couny --- my question is: am I likely to have more luck looking in North Adams or in Pittsfield? Are the records centralized in Pittsfield or still maintained in the towns? When she married in Ft. Edward, NY, Mary E. said her parents were John Hines and Mary Tierney, although she was raised an orphan. It is possible her mother died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. Where would I find death records for North Adams? Thanks for any leads you can give me. Kathy Liston
