I have tried to send away for this information twice. No luck. Is there anyone who has access to it who could see what HUBBARD family is listed? I'd really appreciate it. Have you tried Columbia County in New York state, just west of Berkshire County? There were Hubbards and Hollenbecks there. In the History of Columbia County, published in 1878, page 310, 2nd column, there is mention of a John Hubbard as a member of the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches of New Lebanon in the late 1700s. Both the Pittsfield Library and the Columbia County Historical Society (Kinderhook, NY) have records from New Lebanon and Columbia County. Most of those CD's only list the town's that had there vital records published by the Eddy fund, about 1/3 of the Berkshire COunty towns. Could he have been married in a diferant town than born? Thank you so much for the help and ideas. Horatio H. Hubbard b. 1805 is a different one. He's the son of John and Louisa Brown Hubbard. I have managed to sort out 4 different Horatio Hubbard's. These 2 are only a year apart and born in same area. I wonder if they could have been cousins. The other 2 are born much later. I tried to connect Horatio B. Hubbard with Bailey Hubbard in Egremont, because they move at the same times to Oneida NY and then Genesee Co, NY. Bailey Hubbard (wife Lurancy Kellogg) was a Rev. Vet so he had records for that, but I can't find anything beyond his wife's name. No listing of children. Census records show boy the right age, but unless I can find a birth/Bible record I'm stuck. My Horatio B. Hubbard married Mary Hollenbeck. Can't find those records either. That would have been about 1830. I appreciate the ideas and help. KM
Can anybody tell me where I could get a look at a map of Pontoosuc Lake before it was dammed? I'd like to know how much area was covered by the water, and what the lake looked like before and after it was dammed. Also - are there any Lanesborough land records that go back to the 1700s? I'm interested in the FRISBIE family which was living in Lanesborough before the Revolution. I wondered if it's possible to find out where they lived. Thanks for any help or hints - Edie in Maine
Hi, Listers -- Can someone tell me where Berkshire Co marriage records from 1878 could be found? Do I need to write to the MA State Archives or have they been filmed? Does the County Clerk have these? Thank you -- M'Lisa Whitney MLisa@FadedGenes.com Researching: Rich, Thorp(e), and Lobdell families of Adams Twp.
On March 24th, 2002, your local PBS station will be running this: [Chances are it will be 9pm eastcoast as its Boston based ...] This is the great Hurricane of 1938 that did so much Damage *so far inland* I remember my folks and grandfather telling about it destroying the peach/apple orchards on the Mohawk Trail - in searching found this reference to Springfield.. http://pbs.org/amex/hurricane38/ >>September 21: A devastating hurricane drives through the northeastern United States. Residents are unprepared for the storm and the flooding it brings. Over 600 people are killed, most by drowning. Another hundred are never found. Property damage is estimated at $300 million -- over 8,000 homes are destroyed, 6,000 boats wrecked or damaged. Yet the hurricane does not receive much media attention; Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Adolf Hitler in Europe dominates headlines before and after the storm.<< OR -- go direct to this which has great historical related info along with a map of the path this destruction occurred.. Amazing.. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/hurricane38/maps/index.html It could be during this that many family records were destroyed. >>The storm traveled almost directly northward up the Connecticut River Valley, dumping copious amounts of rain especially to the westward of its track. << There is also a 'timeline' of many storms - broken into 2 1635-1935 and 1938-1996 You can get more www.pbs.org and read so much more http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/hurricane38/peopleevents/e_aftermath.html [PBS Previews is a publication of PBS Online. KM: I looked at the Search & ReSearch Publishing Corporation CD for Early Vital Records of Western MA and did not find a birth record for a Horatio B. HUBBARD. However I did find three intention of marriage records for Horatio H. HUBBARD and Aurilla M. WEBB, which you may already have and did not use because of the "H," in lieu of "B.", but in case not, such records follow below: 1. Page 93 of Otis, Berkshire Co., MA Marriages records the following Intention of Marriage: "HUBBARD, (Hubbart), Horatio H. of Sandisfield and Aurilla M. Webb of O., int. May 25, 1825." 2. Page 83 of Sandisfield, Berkshire Co., MA Marriages records the following: "HUBBARD, Horatio H. and Aurilla M. Webb of Otis, May 18, 1825." This above record is very likely an "Intention of Marriage" and the data extractor did not note that fact in his or her transcription of the record. 3. Page 122 of Otis, Berkshire Co., MA Marriages records the following Intention of Marriage: "WEBB, Aurilla M. of O. and Horatio H. Hubbard of Sandisfield, int. May 25, 1825." There were no marriage records at all listed for Sandisfield, Berkshire Co., MA under the surname of WEBB. I'm out of ideas where to look. Looking for a birth of Horatio B. HUBBARD, b. January 10, 1804 I believe he may have been born in Egremont, Berkshire, MA. Any suggestions where I might search? I'm stuck. Thanks, KM
I am seeking to verify the parents, siblings & children of Nicodemas HARRINGTON who is listed in the 1790 and 1800 Federal Census in Adams, Berkshire Co., MA. In some Revolutionary War records, the last name is variously spelled HEARNDON/HERINGTON, and I believe the records I have found are for his father, also named Nicodemas (or Nichodemus). I would also like to know if this family came to the Adams area from Smithfield, R.I., which might help me get a link to his ancestors. Nicodemas was born about 1783, probably in Adams, and married Salome SHELDON (dtr of John) about 1803. Known children include: Otis Harrington, b. 1804 Augustus, b. 1809 Nicodemus? b. 1812 Daniel Sheldon, b. 14 July 1816 - married Mary Ann MEAD on January 6, 1841, dtr of Seymour Mead and Lucy Mason [Daniel was my gr-grgrandfather. His other siblings are unknown.] By 1820, Salome is listed as head of household in Adams, and soon after that Otis and others began moving to Lake County, OH. Later, Salome came also and died there in 1862. Thanks so much for any help! Jan Harrington in Colorado

John, This is good, but I think you have too many "grandchildren" involved. Here is the simplified version direct from Anthropology 101 (which I've taught): Your parents' siblings' children = your 1st cousins Your grandparents' siblings' children = your 2nd cousins Your great-grandparents siblings' children = your 3rd cousins and so on. For "removes" it follows the same pattern for each generation (first, second, etc.): Your first cousin's child = your first cousin, once removed; that child's child, your first cousin, twice removed; that child's child, your first cousin, thrice removed. Where the confusion sets in is that it does not work the same going up the generations as it does down (now I know everyone is getting really confused, but just calm down and pay attention. It may help to diagram this on a piece of paper using your own family (or make up names if you don't know the real ones.) Or you can use the diagram below. At the top of the paper write down the name of your father's father (your grandfather). Under that in the left hand column put your father's name. Under that put your name. Under that one of your kids. In the right hand column under your grandfather's name put a sibling of your father's (aunt or uncle). Under that put one of their kids. And under that one of that person's kids. Arthur (grandfather) Bob (father) Joy (aunt) Kathy (me) Art (my 1st cousin) Chris (my son) Corinne (my 1st cousin, once removed) Looking at this starting at the top, you see that my first cousin Art is the child of my father's sibling, Joy. Art's daughter Corinne is my 1st cousin, once removed. But now let's look at Corinne's relationship to me --- remember I said that a second cousin is the child of your grandparent's sibling. Joy is Corinne's grandmother; Bob is Joy's brother and sibling; I am Bob's child. So to Corinne, I am her second cousin, although to me she is a first cousin, once removed. Now you see where the confusion sets in! These relationships tend to be understood only by anthropologists, genealogists, and little old ladies in the deep south! For convenience sake, Corinne and I call each other second cousins, but for genealogy's sake you have to get it correct. I hope this has clarified things a little. Kathy
I'm new to this list...so here goes... In 1848 my G-Grandfather's brother, John Nelson Harned, ran away from his home on Long Island at age 16, and was never heard from again. Over the weekend I stumbled across a reference in Smith, J.E.A., "The History of Pittsfield...", to Nelson Harned as listed on the Civil War Monument in the Pittsfield Park. The information given in the book is that he was a Private with the 34th Reg't of MA Infantry and died January 7, 1864 at Harper's Ferry, VA. Because there are often mistakes in transcription, I'd like to make sure the info in the book is accurate. Is there someone on this list who lives in or near Pittsfield who knows whether this monument still exists and would be willing to visually verify this information on the monument? If this is my relative, he could only have been in Pittsfield from 1848 to 1862. He might have worked for the Coltsville Paper-Mill which was set up in 1848, because he had worked in a Long Island paper mill managed by his father. Do any of you folks have suggestions of good local sources which would cover this time period?. Thanks in advance for any assistance in solving this 150 year old family mystery. Hello everyone: I am Ray Brown and just became the new Coordinator for the Berkshire County GenWeb. Why not take a visit and see what the GenWeb has to offer for Brkshire County. If you have any information on Genealogy and/or History of Berkshire County I would be happy to add it to the GenWeb for you. This is located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maberksh/ If you ever want to see what has been added lately just click on the Whit's New icon on the left side of the page. All that I have added so far is the 1790 census and some other census links. I have some other Berkshire County Vital Record pages at my New England Genealogy web site that will be moved to this site to keep all the Berkshire County info together. If you have any information about Berkshire County on the web please let me know and I will put a link to it on the link page and/or a town page. A few days ago I offerred to email, to any one interested, copies of the "diamond shaped" chart that facilitates calculating the degree of removal of cousins. There was quite a response which has since died down. I have placed the chart on its own web page on my website. at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~arnold/chart.htm Any who would like to have it can download it from there at theirconvenience.
