I have a copy of a page of the Adams 1890 directory. They use abbreviations like: h, R, bds, c, do, A. I don't know what these mean. Could somone point me towards a source for finding the meaning of these please? John
Thank you Judy, Two of the items I had but not the tax itemin MA. Consider was bn in 1763 and one of the stories in the family was that he had been a drummer boy at the age of 13 but there is no proof. I wish this man had written a journal , the research would have been easier. He named one of his sons Noah and he seemed to have strong ties with the Washburn family, more than one would expect from a spouse as he named his youngest son, Darwin Washburn, alhtough his Mother was Sarah Tefft, the second wife of Consider. Odd. again, thank your for your help Marjorie
I thought I would try this family again since I see a lot of people talking about New Milford and different areas of CT. I am most interested in anything you might have in connection with the following people: Samuel Hitchcock (son of Samuel and Deborah Mallory Hitchcock, b. 28 Feb 1730/31 in New Milford, Litchfield, CT (have birth record) and died 19 Feb 1801 in Sheffield, Berkshire, MA). He first married to Sarah Sears (dau of Joshua and Rebecca Mayo Sears) b. 1746 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA (not quite sure on this, or possibly after they moved to Middletown, CT) and she died sometime shortly after 27 Mar 1771 (after birth of daughter, Jerusha). Most of my information says that these children (Ebenezer, Reuben and Jerusha) were born in New Marlborough, Berkshire, MA. Sarah and Samuel supposedly married about 1766 in Middletown, Middlesex, CT. After she died, he married (20 Oct 1783) her sister, Elizabeth (Betsey) Sears. They had Silas. Betsey died after 1803. Samuel was a Rev. Soldier and I don't know even where for sure he is buried. There apparently at one time was a letter from Betsey to the Pittsfield Courthouse indicating that the reason she didn't probate his estate was because there was none. I wrote them about this and didn't get an answer - quite awhile ago. I have been trying to find verification for these people for years and can't come up with anything to document there births/deaths/marr. etc. I have Samuel Hitchcock's birth record. I know he was on the Sheffield, CT census in 1800 and died in 1801 but that town doesn't have him in a cemetery. I can really find nothing on Sarah Sears. All of Joshua and Rebecca Mayo Sears' children are on vital statistics in Yarmouth or Middletown except for Sarah and Thomas, although most genealogies put them in the appropriate time frame. A lot of researchers attribute all 4 children to Betsy - ignoring poor Sarah, but since Betsy and Samuel didn't get married (although I have no documentation for that either) until after the birth of the first three children, it doesn't work. These Sears are my connection to the Mayflower - and I guess either sister would do, but I think Sarah is the mother of my Jerusha and her two older brothers, Ebenezer and Reuben. Of course, none of these people appear in the Barbour Collection. Where in Middletown were they from? Should I be looking somewhere else for vitals on ANY of them? Thank you. Samuel Hitchcock is descended from Luke and Elizabeth Gibbons Hitchcock. Washburn approval of a marriage to a Baptist would be a big enough hurdle! Money would have to be in the picture. My grandfather whose mother was a Washburn married a Baptist and gave in and became one himself. His parents and sister remained staunch Episcopalians, as are the Washburns who are stll living today. Our line, however, is femaling out. The name will soon be gone. Barbara [email protected] wrote: Thank you for replying to me letter about Consider White. Marjorie, Have you searched theough the Washburn line to try to find him? I also have Washburn ancestors. Mine were in Newtown Conn, and went from there to Otsego County, New York. Others went to Westchester-Rockland Counties amd still others further west in New York. I will see what I might have on a Sarah with a sister Abigail. Just one of those grasping at straws ideas. And I thank all of you who have tried to help me with my research and my straw grasping. Ditto. There is also a Sharon Springs in upstate New York -- where, conceivably, someone from Berkshire County might have moved west to, just to keep trying to help. There is a township in Litchfield County, Connecticut, named Sharon. It is located on the New York State border, south of the town of Salisbury, which borders on the southwesternmost corner of Massachusetts. The eastern border of the Town of Sharon is the Housatonic River. The principal (really, the only) village in the Town of Sharon is also Sharon. They have an active historical society, if that is any help to you. Hope this is useful!
