It's interesting that the census never lists him as a silversmith, but as a traveling merchant. I had an ancestor from Litchfield CT who was also a traveling merchant Then he eventually took up silversmithing on the side. I'm not related to Volney Haskell- I am just interested in his background. Thanks so much for sharing. Marguerite

    3. The marriage of Chloe and Alpha came from the Great Barrington vital Records to the Year 1850. According to the Hustonic Congregational Church Ashel King was a member of that church in 1743 and he died in 1756. Esther King, Huldah King and Esther King 2nd and Sarah King all were members in 1744. The Congressional church Records of Upper Sheffred now great Barrington says that Ashel King died 24 January 1759 and Ruben King died 22 Jan 1759,. the end Ashel King died 30 Oct 1756. the LDS records has pages of records on the King family they have several Chloe reported one is a Chloe King born 3 Oct 1744 her father was Ashel King and her mother Rebecca Nash. I could not connect any of the ones to my family However I think she might be the Chloe King born 13 Nov 1798 to Peter King and Abigar they lived in Amherst, Newhampshire County MA according to LDS records. I guess I lost track of you over the years. In the late 70s you assisted me with the Strickland and Waterhouse line and sent me quite alot of info on the Stricklands. I'm still struggling with finding the parents of Thomas Waterhouse though. In the 1850 census of Otis, Volney Haskell is listed as born in 1819/20 and listed as a merchant. I was in Otis this summer (overnight) but was able to read some info written by a woman named Haskell who had a hand written history of Otis. A map of Otis showed Volney Haskell living very near to my ancestor's brother - Joseph Waters who was the postmaster in 1850. I don't know how much silverware he manufactured, but I do have a spoon of his. I did find his name listed on a list of silversmiths on a web site for antique silverware. I'm so glad to know you are still doing research. I may have to help you give me some clues as the the Waterhouse dilema. There are other Waterhouses in the Otis Vital Records to 1850 and wondered if they fit in somehow to my line. Any ideas?

    3. Hi Jack, Your best bet for researching Lenox records is the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield. They have a wonderful local history department, much of it computer indexed. They have Massachusetts Vital Records both pre-1850 in town books, and post-1850 on microfilm, plus a wealth of information for the Berkshires and surrounding areas. Pittsfield is about 20 minutes from Lenox. Lenox would be a very expensive place to stay--try Pittsfield and you will get a better bargain. It's off-season now and you should be able to find something that won't cost you an arm and a leg. As a bonus attraction, just between Lenox and Pittsfield is the National Archives and Records Administration, with federal census records, immigration, Revolutionary War pension applications, etc. They have volunteers to help with computer and microfilm searches. Good luck in your research.
