    1. [MABERKSH] Baptist Church just south of Sandisfield
    2. Barbara de Mare
    3. While visited Sandisfield where I believe my CHAPEL ancestors resided from before the Revolution to the start of the 19th century, I noticed a small Baptist Church just over the border in Connecticut, and very near the Roberts Road cemetery where my 4G grandfather Richard Crignon Chapel was buried with his first wife, Grace. It is believed that the Chapels were early Baptists. They certainly were heavily involved in the Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where they moved from Sandisfield via Hartford. Does anyone know anything about this Baptist Chirch, including the whereabouts of any extant records, and/or the religion of RICHARD CRIGNON CHAPEL? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have contaced the North Adams Historical Society and they did not tell me much. Just that it was a bayonett stuck in a rifle. I am guessing this man may have been my great great grandfather, James F. Cooney and as far as I know he came to America from Ireland in 1871 so that would be AFTER the Civil War, correct? Thanks for telling me about that book in the library. Perhaps I can have a look in there somehow. I live in New Jersey though and would need to take a trek up that way. thanks so much for your reply! Interesting that you have a McNamara in your family... as my James Cooney married an Elizabeth McNamara. But that McNamara family was from Fall River, Mass. and I don't think any of them were in North Adams. My Cooneys moved from North Adams to Fall River around 1893-1898. Also, perhaps I could check grave stones and see if any of my ancestors have any military markers on theirs. do you think many had civil war medallions on them like your ancestor's? I wonder if he was in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which I see came after the GAR. I believe this photo was taken between 1880 and 1890 and that like I said, I'm not sure my ancestor would have served in the Civil War since he came in 1871. perhaps his father was already in the USA though and served. I really don't know. I am hoping there is someone out there that knows more about uniforms and could help. I have yet to really figure out what this photo is of/for.

Looks like a civil war bayonette, I bet it's a picture of him in a GAR Uniform. (Grand Army of the Republic) You should try sending a copy to the North Adams Historical Society they might be able to help you. I know there's a book at the North Adams Public Library that names all the North Adams Civil War Vets. By the way my gggrandfather was Michael McNamara, from 65 River St in North Adams, his grave marker has a civil war medallion on it that states GAR 78/6, regrettably he died right before the GAR for North Adams was started (1887) so I couldn't find exactly where he enlisted.

Would like to talk to you or at least thru E'mail about the Printiss name and the Curtiss name. My great great grandmother was Mary Curtiss Printiss from Dalton. Some of my research was done in the Pittsfield Public Library and recently has reached far from the Berkshires. I am retired and now reside in Navarre Florida. One of the best research facilities I have ever been to is the Library in Pittsfield. That facility is truly amazing. Most everything is digitized with search engines. Their books have been digitally indexed so that you can search for whomever you are looking for and you will get a list showing the book or collection, volume number and page number. All you have to do is look them up in that book. Some collections are totally digital with PDF files all indexed. The research assistants are extremely helpful as well. There is also a National Archives right there in Pittsfield so if you can't find it at the library you can try locating them at the Archives. By far Pittsfield, MA is the place to go if you have any connections to Western MA, Eastern NY, NH or CT. They far exceed anything that Springfield has to offer. And the area is just plain beautiful, especially in the fall. --- [email protected] wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Advice for Visiting Berkshire Cty, MA (Terri) > 2. Eastlawn Cemetery is the only cemetery for Williamstown in the center of Williamstown, besides the Williams College Cemetery. There is a Southlawn Cemetery in South Williamstown at the "Four Corners area." Williamstown Town Clerk, 31 North Street Williamstown, Massachusetts 01267-2003, Phone: (413) 458-9341. If their families were really from the North Adams area and they were just living with their children in Williamstown they might be buried in either family's plot in another town. Hillside Cemetery is an old North Adams Cemetery. It is on either side of Route 2 going west to Williamstown just before the Braytonville area of North Adams. St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery and Southview Cemetery are to the south of North Adams off of Church Street. Southview is the newer cemetery and the cemetery office has these records. There is a Clark Cemetery in Clarksburg on West Street. It is an historic cemetery. Clarksburg Town Clerk, 111 River Road, Clarksburg, Massachusetts 01247-2147, Phone: (413) 663-5282. I have been there many times in person but I am not sure of the offical title of that office since someone else said that the cemetery office is on Hall Street. You should be able to find all your various families if they ever lived in North Adams since as another poster said those names are very familiar. Williamstown is a totally different story. Google the phone number of the Williamstown town hall/town clerk and they will tell you the number of the person/office that maintains their cemetery records. Williamstown and North Adams are totally separate when it comes to those records. You will have to talk to the town clerk in Williamstown to find out the death records. These are separate from the cemetery records. They are very friendly. They may just tell you how to write for the records and how much! it costs but I have found that they are happy to help you. There is one main cemetery in Williamstown on the main road/Route 2 between Williamstown and North Adams. I would bet if they were buried in Williamtown it would be there. My family is buried in the old cemetery in North Adams but anyone who died in the 1950's and 60's had to be buried in another newer cemetery. You can get good cemetery maps at the North Adams office that shows where everyone is buried in every cemetery except for the one on Mount Greylock that was so old they didn't even know about it but I know none of your family names are there.

    1. [MABERKSH] Williamstown/Adams/North Adams records
    2. It has been a while since I sent for records from North Adams and Williamstown. At that time they were about $5 from the town clerk. If you write they will get right back to you and let you know if they have the record or not. They are very helpful. Barbara R

    3. Hi Terri, No snow to worry about! The Pittsfield Atheneum is an excellent archives with lots to offer. When doing Berkshire County research it is important to know that Berkshire County has three districts. The lower district where my ancestors resided has offices in Great Barrington. The have land records back to the grants to the original propritors, and lots of history in those ancient volumes. There are separate offices for the Middle and Northern Districts. Most genealogy guides to courthouses have the information. I would try first the County Courthouse Book or the Red Book. Surrogate;s Districts in Connecticut have their own divisions. If you want me to find the right one for your ancestors, let me know their precise location. Finding a place to stay can be more difficult. Berkshire County is still sparsely settled. I would think your best bets would be in Pittsfield, Lenox, Lee. When I was neae there in the fall it took me hours to find anything--good thing my planincluded checking out the scenery I was closer t Kinderhook, however. Any other questions on researching this area, just ask. I have done a fair amount on the Town of Sandisfield. and in the Athenaum. 1. [MABERKSH] Housatonic Inn 1921
    2. I am looking for any info I can find about the Housatonic Hall, a.k.a. the Mohawk Inn or Pittsfield Inn which was located at 170 South Street in Pittsfield, Mass. around 1921. It was run by the Misses Crosby and Davis, a two-story house. I have a copy of a postcard that someone on the List sent me a few years ago that says it is "courtesy of Ann Marie Harris--print of postcard from Rick Leab collection." All along I have been looking under Mohawk or Pittsfield Inn and just now noticed that it says "Housatonic Hall." It couldn't have just vanished off the face of the earth, could it? Thanks, Sherry Braun Tallahassee, Florida
